Things wouldn’t have escalated this badly had @NextLevel not moved the posts around and put it on Tony thread which Tony says were not relevant to his thread which I agree with Tony.

What I disagree with NextLevel is that he says we can’t talk about the racism or issues that the players or spectators have experience at the current ITTF Mixed Team World Cup. NextLevel says it not relevant to talk about it in the Mixed World Cup thread but I disagree with him, these discussions should be talked about in the ITTF Mixed World Cup thread as it is related to it and not be hidden or talked about somewhere else in the forums.
To @Dan and @UpSideDownCarl I hope you can reconsider this. We should be speaking up about issues that the players or spectators have faced which is currently happening at the current Mixed Team World Cup.

Tony was banned for 48 hours by myself. I moderated a few posts in a thread discussing the XTWC and we disagreed over how they were being handled. I asked him to PM me or other moderators directly rather than make it a public issue on the forum or I would ban him and he refused to do so because it wasn't in the rules so I banned him for 48 hours. It really is that straightforward.
being banned for 2 days is not a real ban. It is basically a "let's take a time out since we are not on the same page".
Finally, I banned Tony for 2 days. If he leaves, it is a pride issue

But what I did I did on principle and would have done to any member of the forum who did what Tony did

And like I said, there are many reasonable solutions to this for people who are willing to discuss and negotiate. If he doesn't want to, it is not because my ears are closed.

FYI

I also timeout users on discord (for starting drama, I’ll tell them to just dm each other instead).

2 days is a lot though. I would choose 3 hours minimum. 1 day maximum. Maybe more if they are a repeat offender.

You guys should look at this from a moderation point of view. It doesn’t matter how popular Tony is. Timeouts should happen and do happen.

Wait a second. You're the guy who is promoting the Enron exec/felon in another thread. And you 'time-outed' Tony???
I never noticed that you're a mod.
Curious. Can anyone tell me who exactly owns this forum?

So.......
What are the rules?
What are the principals?
When mods are part of an argument - should maybe another mod step in and ask both of them to pm each other?
If I argue with a mod in the Enron thread, would I get banned too?

How does the banning work? 1 day, or 2 days for first offense? What is 2nd offense, 1 week, 1 month?

Tony shared this with me, at first, he was banned for 1 day, then it got upgraded to 2 days - which according to a mod on another forum is really long?
Did the other mods agree on banning Tony for 2 days or do they agree banning for 2 days is the norm as a first time offender?

Irrespective on who Tony is, or what he did was right or wrong, did a new mod comes onboard, starts making all these rule changes and implementing it before it was announced to us forum members?

I found the forum rules hidden and see nothing about these new rules and principal nextlevel speaks of, here are the rules:

  1. All posts must be written in English.
  2. Don't spam/abuse any other member via e-mail or Private Messages.
Do not spam or self-promote in the forums
These forums define spam as unsolicited advertisement for goods, services, and/or other websites or posts with little, no, or completely unrelated content.
Do not spam the forums with links to your site or product, or try to self-promote your website, business, or forums, etc. Doing so is a waste of time.
Your account will be banned permanently, and your posts will be deleted.
Spamming also includes sending private messages to a large number of different users.
Do not post "Free" threads
Posting pyramid scams (such as free iPods, LCDs, etc.) is forbidden. All such posts/signatures will be edited or deleted. Any new users posting scams will be banned permanently; contributing users will either be warned or temporarily banned.
Do not cross post questions
Please refrain from posting the same question in several forums. There is normally one forum which is most suitable for your question. If you're not sure where to post, ask a moderator first.

  • Do not post "offensive" posts, links, or images.
  • Do not post anything which is offensive, hateful, racist, sexist, discriminatory, obscene, vulgar, or in violation of local or international laws.
  • Remain respectful of other users, moderators, and administrators at all times.
Posting
All posts should be professional and courteous. You have every right to disagree with your fellow community members and explain your perspective. However, you are not free to attack, degrade, insult, or otherwise belittle them or the quality of this community. It does not matter what title or power you hold in these forums; you are expected to obey this rule. Doing otherwise will get your account banned temporarily or permanently if the situation becomes severe enough (this will be left to the discretion of the moderation team).
For example, phrases such as "shut up, idiot," are indicative of problematic posts and should be reported. Suggested alternatives include "I disagree with what you said for the following reasons..."
Please remember to stay mature and thoughtful at all times.

Was this Tony banned even discuss with @Dan and @UpSideDownCarl or has NextLevel been calling all the shots without discussing it with Dan and Carl.

You may find that there are still posts on that thread that discuss the impact of racism and issues on the players and fans.

What I find dangerous is the line between talking about that and pontificating on the broader historical issues/politics of the region or talking about how China and Japan interact etc. Those are all things that I am not an expert on and which I either generally accept public opinion or would prefer that those things are restricted. For example, it was only after spending time reading articles (one of them provided by Tony) that I discovered that part of the reason for the current unpopularity of Japanese athletes in China was because of comments made by the Japanese Prime Minister about China and Taiwan. For me, I think as an analogy of all the trouble people have in the US with respect to foreign governments or arguing over Israel and Palestine etc. All it takes is someone who wants to advocate the other side and then we get a flame war.

Anything related to how the athletes or fans were being treated, I did my best to leave alone and erroneously moved at least one post that was part of the beginning of this contention. Going beyond that to talk about broader international relations was what I tried to remove. That said, it is a topic that people can weigh in on because such things have consequences.

But please let's be clear, I had zero issue with posting about what the athletes were experiencing. Extending that to general political discussions about China, Japan, Taiwan, or even arguing that some particular person should do this or that was what I was trying to avoid.

If Taiwan is part of China then why does it have it's own government, currency, flag, army, economy, etc ????

No way does Taiwan want to be part of communist China. Just look at what happened to Hong Kong.
this is not the topic, please do not argue at a long debated issue, people in China believe taiwan is part of China, people in the west thinks its not. Agree to disagree as to not cause an argument

I agree.
I saw Tony's reply in the Mixed Team thread, including the video he recorded, this was before mods removed it.
Tony was not happy about your post and a few others moved to his other thread and asking nextlevel to explain why he did that and to apologize for his action and that was his last post, at least from what I saw, he wrote on TTD.

What I disagree with NextLevel is that he says we can’t talk about the racism or issues that the players or spectators have experience at the current ITTF Mixed Team World Cup. I agree, Japanese players were being attacked verbally. By legal definition, it was a death threat and a big issue.
I noticed a lot of posts being moved/removed. I'm curious on how much of these moving/removing happens in the background the past week.

I believe your post was moved - did you get informed or asked for your approval before moving of it?

And the title of this thread calling it a ban isn't even precise or correct, it's slanted and stirs things.
Proper title would be something along the lines of "Tony given a cool down period, throws toys from pram and decides not to return".
Backspacer is not wrong.
It clearly shows “you have been banned…”

Continue mocking him, it just shows who you are.

IT's very simple - if someone refuses to discuss with me in private and makes it clear that my authority is simply undeserving of respect, I ban them for a relatively short period. One day vs two days is about two things - one is that I am not entirely sure how the calendar works on the board. And in my opinion, arguing extensively with moderators on forums is not something that should be encouraged. It seems that this is not the opinion of others for some reason, and that is okay, over time, people will understand the implications of what they are encouraging because they think this is largely about my personality and not about principle. Again, I did exactly the same thing to zeio. So for me, I am not concerned with favoritism. The main policy, which people can decide whether it will win out or not, is whether one should at least talk to the moderator about whatever they are unhappy with or whether they should post publicly and repeatedly about it without even having discussed it with the moderator to give the moderator a chance to fix it privately and then make it public. And when someone decides that they want to post something repeatedly accusing the moderator of bad faith action, what the response should be.

The most likely reason is he doesn't like me telling players to retire, namely Ishikawa, Boll, Ito and Hayata. And then TPE being a part of China, which is even in the Constitution of the Republic of China (ROC), misleadingly referred to by the separatists and many in the West as Taiwan.

"Retire, Tony", however, hits different...

Did you ask people in TPE if they want to be part of China or you decide for them?

At the risk of calling out the obvious, thanks for making my point. It's not that I don't have a personal opinion, but in the absence of knowing what the opinion that ownership is safe enforcing, isn't it just best to encourage people to avoid such topics?

Freedom for Tony!!!!
Tony is free, he will be able to return in a few hours and then what he decides then is up to him. I am sure given this thread and his status there will be some consideration of how best to ask him to come back and what it will take. His price may be steep but if he has one and it can be met, it will be met and I will not be the barrier to it being met.

The fighting has no future... We must all go deeper... Or higher, or whatever, find you name... The level must go up... It is actually going up, but kind of slowly... Then, and only then, certain things will dissapear... We won't even wish for cutting of the head of those who brought this upon us ;-) We are guilty too... Cheers.

<ahem>

Why with seven posts are you so interested in all of this?

Should I emulate the behavior of the poster you're defending (with your oh-so-persuasive arguments, such as "End of") by accusing a fellow poster of "simping"?

No, no I shouldn't. So I won't. But I will say that - much like the moralizing and equivocation of the person you're defending so vehemently - you're playing in "pot calling kettle" waters of hypocrisy.

Hong Kong is actually just as free if not freer than when it was under British rule, otherwise, all the social movements (a handful of them would qualify as secession) wouldn't have been left alone for 1/4 century after the handover in 1997. British Hong Kong also had something called the Special Branch with its fair share of political censorship. The British government only allowed some form of elections towards the end of their rule and Chinese government has observed it as promised and have only carried out some reforms recently after all those events that aimed at destabilizing the region and the state. Stability and prosperity have always been the top priorities of the Chinese people since ancient times. Given the Brits in their current state (whereas China doesn't even register the UK's presence on the world stage), Hong Kongers are actually better off now.

As for Taiwan not wanting to be part of China, what do you know? In recent years, many notable individuals, namely Youtubers and influencers, who used to be anti-Beijing have had a change of hearts after years and years of disappointment under the rule of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
