Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona (often referred to in Spanish as Trofeo Internacional Ciudad de Barcelona, or simply TICB) is an annual invitational international singles table tennis tournament organised since 1983 by the Federació Catalana de Tennis de Taula (Catalan Table Tennis Federation, FCTT). The event is held in Barcelona, mainly at the Poliesportiu La Salle Bonanova sports hall.

Its goal is to bring together, on a compact stage (usually 8 players), top representatives of world table tennis along with leading Spanish/Catalan athletes, offering spectators a high-level show.

The format is a singles tournament, commonly featuring 8 participants: strong international stars plus top Spanish/Catalan players. The event is designed as an evening showcase — few matches, a show-like atmosphere, and high entertainment value for both fans and players.

History of the Tournament

Ciutat de Barcelona is one of the most traditional and prestigious annual invitational table tennis events in Spain. The first edition was held in 1983; over the decades, the tournament has welcomed numerous world-class stars (including Guo Yuehua, Mikael Appelgren, Jan-Ove Waldner, Zoran Primorac, Vladimir Samsonov). In some years the event was not held (depending on the source: 1985, 1987, 1996, 2007 — occasional gaps are noted).
The main value of the tournament lies in providing local fans with a compact, evening-format showcase (typically 7 matches) featuring world-class players alongside top Spanish and Catalan athletes. It often serves as a year-end invitational show event.
TICB has long become a traditional “evening table tennis ceremony” in Barcelona. According to the organisers, it is an opportunity for Catalan fans to see the global elite in an intimate and accessible atmosphere.
Over time, the format has occasionally evolved — for example, in 2023 the lineup included two women for the first time in many years, giving the event a mixed-character profile.
TICB is appreciated for:
  • its compact and entertaining format (one evening, 7–8 matches);
  • the presence of world-class stars;
  • the blend of international and national/regional level players;
  • excellent fan experience: evening start times and the familiar venue at La Salle Bonanova, close to central Barcelona.
Notable multi-title winners include:
  • Vladimir Samsonov — one of the most decorated champions, mentioned in the press as a four-time winner (as of 2012) and multiple-time champion;
  • Robert Gardos — winner at least twice;
  • Other prominent champions: Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Anton Källberg — top-level international competitors.
Format and Structure
  • Number of participants: usually 8, formed by direct invitations — world stars plus leading Spanish/Catalan players;
  • Draw: straight knockout — quarterfinals → semifinals → final;
  • Schedule: one evening, single-day competition, making it fast-paced and spectator-friendly; typically starts around 17:00;
  • Lineup: top international athletes together with strong national/regional players.
Thus, TICB is not a standard “multi-day ranking tournament” like WTT or ITTF events, but rather a show tournament: a compact evening program with only a few matches, focused on entertainment and featuring high-level invited players.
