tantrums is common for young kids who doesn't get want they want, but at 21 years old, it isn't normal.
I just hope it doesn't get more and more violence as if he goes and punch a wall or something, then he could be out for a few months
Our experience is vastly different then, which is no surprise seeing as we come from vastly different backgrounds.
Many of the 21 yr olds I knew were capable of such tantrums. Not all of course but playing competitive sports it was easy to see the ones who could let their emotions rule them, they were the one's with the most competitive streak!
ALB checks this box ✅
They tried so hard, put so much in and it just meant more to them and was sometimes overwhelming.
They couldn't balance their emotions with their failure. And they were the same when they won, going OTT in a way that wasn't healthy either.

You're right to describe it as childish (when you say it's common in kids) and most ppl have grown out of it by their 20s but not all.
And to reiterate, it was more common to me than the way some people are reacting.
He's still a kid in essence and needs help so I don't think people blasting him is the way to help.
How would we help our own kids in such a situation?
There is punishment - shout at them, belittle them, make them feel bad etc.
And there is help. He needs help.
He can be a top sportstar and someone for France to be proud of. So I just don't see that the ott negative reactions to ridicule him as if this behaviour is somehow unheard of in young men is in any way helpful or even genuine.

The literature on young men and their behaviour has been written over a hundred years ago and confirmed a million times over.
It's not uncommon and it should be accepted as that and dealt with in a normal and healthy way.
Education, understanding and explanation of the rules.
That's it for me.

how many of them is dumb enough to injure they hand by punching a hard object?
the water bottle just 2 weeks ago,,, and now the table. There is a pattern and I am in no position to comment if it happens more often or not.

I see a lot of frustration after losses. it isn't only European or French that has tantrums but physical violence on objects is a bit too much. kicking, punching etc, is not good but I have seen it inside the locker rooms after matches.

you can scream in the bathroom, break your own things in anger - like you racket, tear your clothes, all these I have seen.
but punching the table - you will get red card and disqualified from the tournament and have fines. It is stupid to get Dqed.
injuring your hand, even more stupid
what happen if some bones are broken?
if that was one of our players who did something stupid.... I don't even know what can't of disciplinary action will be taken, because it is just way too stupid - hurting oneself...

There is a fine line between emotion and physical violence.

yes, and we all said he needs professional guidance.
sadly, the coach isn't equip for such role, as it is not a table tennis issue.

understood, but common sense should prevail
if an athlete goes and damage him or herself, then lots of education is needed.
this is no different than drugs, drinking, smoking, gambling and other had habits.

Your describing the symptoms. I didn't say it isn't too much and I'm not downplaying the actions.
You're rehashing what he did and blowing it up as if he killed someone.
I'm talking about how to help him and the way that works in addressing the issue.
But calling it stupidly is showing your lack of understanding Tony.
It's not stupidity that causes it, it's a lack of emotional control. Stupidity is the outcome.
When the dust settles and they return to their normal selves they even can agree that 'action' was stupid. The action, not the person.
There is a fine line between emotion and physical violence.
You need to be more accurate. It's not physical violence in the way most people will understand that phrase. It's self harm, for failure, from frustration because of a lack of emotional control.
yes, and we all said he needs professional guidance.

The I don't know what you're saying?
You want to help him but want to also call him stupid etc ?
If course It's not the coaches job to teach him about himself in a way that is related to personal emotions.
Understood, but common sense should prevail
if an athlete goes and damage him or herself, then lots of education is needed.

Yeah, and who Sai that isn't the case?
You seem very worked up about this tbh.
Of course 'common sense' should prevail but common sense isn't overreacting as if this behaviour is unheard of in young men and then berating and calling him stupid as a reaction to it.
In fact the sensible approach here is perhaps less common.
It's education and understanding that works and that doesn't involve jumping on forums to name call and shame etc.

People who don't have this streak find it very hard to understand where it comes from and just how difficult it is to change. It's a hardwired pattern and reactionary behaviour.
Try to change ANY of your own behaviours, even innocuous ones, and you'll see how difficult even small changes are.

Bottom line is that there are overreactionary posts to what is essentially the manifestation of a character flaw in a young man.

Call him stupid if you want but I think he is far from stupid. He is an intelligent young man who needs help with one aspect of his behaviour

he didn't kill someone, he needs to protect his assets
he is a pro table tennis player, you don't go and damage your playing hand. that is very simple logic.

he is now injured
it could of been worse or maybe it is worse already
it was not a freak accident, it was just very poor judgement, because he was in a zone of rage and it is now how many days apart we see him punching things with his playing hand after a loss?

if he does that every time he looses.... wow, he better switch to left hand player or learn to punch with his left hand.
any pro athlete that looses his temper and does harm to him or herself which could take you out of the game, is not the brightest out there.
So, if he continues to do that, then that is the direction he chooses and live with the consequences. No different to partying and getting drunk on the eve of a match. Players need to take care of themselves.
In players contract, these are fineable actions - doing self harm to one self.

Ok. You keep saying what he needs to do. Fine. Call him stupid, tell him what he needs to do better and state all the obvious things while calling him dumb etc.

Look, to be honest the only reason I'm debating this with you is because I am very surprised at your constant need to point these things out over and over and over because you are a coach.
So as someone who coaches young men and women I was more expecting to find you looking at it from the other side of things, where I am trying to come from. 🤷‍♂️
I am not in any way judging you or alledging anything about you. I've read enough of your posts to know I already respect you. I am just trying to balance all that I think I already know against the strong words you've had in here, in this instance I am a bit surprised.
It will be my last words on the subject because I cannot see any value to continuing this.
I just hope Alexis gets his head around the mental aspects associated with losing and can cut out this behaviour.

Too lazy to look up the corresponding French reports. Alexis has a fracture in his pinkie and his appearance in WTTC Doha 2025 is now in jeopardy.

And one user comment claims he was on site, witnessing the whole thing, that Alexis didn't hurt his hand from punching the table, but that he hit the wall in the corridor so hard that blood was gushing out and that he hurt his wrist as well...

(Alexis Lebrun withdraws from upcoming competitions due to injury
Loose translation: Hello everyone, I want to record a short video for everyone. First of all, congratulations to Felix for winning the title of French Champion. I think our final was wonderful, so I am very happy to have played this wonderful match with him, congratulations to fefe for a great victory and winning your first championship. I have to speak directly to everyone, because after this match, I couldn't control my emotions, and in a moment of anger, I injured my hand. This is the fact, and I regret it very much. I will need to leave the court for a while and concentrate on rehabilitation. I will not attend the upcoming competitions. This will undoubtedly be a lesson for me. I will try to learn to manage my emotions better, and I hope that this will help me become stronger. I want to thank you for your support this weekend. I am sorry for my behavior. I hope you can understand and continue to support me through the new challenges that are coming. I hope to be back soon and share with you the good experiences, just like this weekend in Levallois. So, thank you very much and see you soon.

According to French media reports, Alexis Lebrun will withdraw from the WTT Champions Incheon. The WTT official website has not yet been updated. The 2025 Macao World Cup registration page shows that Alexis Lebrun has withdrawn from the competition.)

yes, everyone knows this, including his family and coaching team.
there is no doubt there is something there that they need to fix and it is not normal among kids the same age, his case is more extreme than the norm - and this is what I am pointing out.

I am just tired of see people using kids or young age as excuse or acceptable behavior for an athlete.

I don't think anybody here tries to find an excuse, or thinks this behavior is acceptable.

The debate is more 'was Alexis stupid when he hit the wall/table', or 'is Alexis stupid in general'.

And 'can he improve himself', or 'should he retire'. Maybe this subject is still too early on TTD.

it seems to be a common problem with 21 year old, but i'm not sure if the user is expressing professional athlete or just normal kids

True,
you need to fall to be able to climb back up.
injured for few months is surely a fall and a mistake I think most young athlete will never do again.

Other kid mistakes I encountered the past 30 days are more like wasting time and money, but not out injured thankfully.

- I left my ipad on the previous airplane seat pocket, what can I do (this is already landed from the connecting flight)?
- I forgot I bought 2 check-in luggage and one is left behind at the airport (after finding out things are missing 2 hours later and a city 1 hour away from the airport)
- I left my passport in the hotel room (we already at the next city 1 hour away).

Thank goodness, all 3 examples were recovered

I hear you.
Just to finish from my side, I was never intending to say that it's acceptable or that age is an excuse, just that it's a challenge that is common for young men to fail at.
I haven't read my posts back so maybe I didn't express it as well as I could have.
Anyway, I'm definitely finished now!
Cheers 👍

Might be wrong for me to say but good for him.
yeah, unfortunate
some says, his feeling might never be the same again
we all gotta wait and see how much of an influence that punching habit has causes.
a bit sad that it is so severe, but this is a good learning for other young players out there.
