Hi All,

I happened to have business on the East Bay Area today... and when said business was done, I was able to visit the training garage of @dingyibvs .

Anyone watching the TTD Daily Chit Chat thread has seen post after post of @dingyibvs assessing his backhand to be sub-par and does/did this or this or that to "fix" it...

I saw in person at the table and the man can make that BH topspin close to the table over and over and dare you to miss... because he ISN'T gunna miss.

His base BH topspin is levels above his play level. Maybe some other situational shots using the BH, like opening, or counter topspin, or a deep fast underspin ball that we can make an argument he could/should spend more time grooving... OK, got that memo, but TTD, you need to know that does not necessarily need to be spent on the basics of his BH.

The only times he really misses a rally BH topspin is for the same reason we ALL miss our shots... because we do not always properly read the impact and know what happened and where/when/how the ball is gunna come. Period.

Put that puppy to rest if anyone thinks his BH is garbage on fire. His BH is an ASSET.

No one really saw too much in point rally situations where ball reading and quick movement and good hand/eye is needed.

Put that damn puppy dog to rest too, he is even better at open rallies at the table and a step away.

You THINK you got him strained to that wide FH to make it to the ball, but he gets there and will lay the SMACK on you for thinking that nonsense. he is not afraid to go forward and attack. If you hit with him, you might think his transmission is stuck ion forward and throttle open.

I did the chop drill with my .5mm long pips and when I gave it to his FH and he wanted to fast loop it, it was blasting towards my BH.

We must have went over 12 different things i will not remember or write about here, but that couple hours was PACKED with good stuff for both of us.

I needed to run around and sweat like an animal anyway... you know that a desk job will get you fatter than fluff in no time flat, so going out to the field and getting into action always helps a heavy dude almost on the wrong side of 60 yrs old.

Glad to have visited that garage of training fame on TTD. Glad to have met up with @dingyibvs after a few years again... dude is accelerating his improvement. WAY improved over last time in all kinds of ways.

video or it never happened
just kidding, im sure some TTD members are high level
Hi @mamedium ,

I very frequently say what you said, but please simply believe what i said, I am so often very full of it, but here, am serious and accurate, even if I understated it... all to be polite and no over doing it.

Everywhere i go, i strive to meet forum members and make friends and experiences... this is what the internet and TT forums can let one leverage it all.

@dingyibvs is going to make his membership in the TTD Goon Squad known to all, a force to be reckoned with.

High level is always a relative thing. High level to what as @brokenball would say. @dingyibvs could crack into being mentioned with the top ten percent of all active serious TT players in USA in the next year if he really wanted to do that.

Maybe the number one thing I did not yet articulate to the forum is how damn well @dingyibvs saw the ball well and got it into the good part of his strike zone while slowing down the power and shortening the stroke... he increasing became more consistent in doing that... and down the road, the confidence he gets in doing that will allow him to go for more overwhelming power on his counter topspin shots that will eat up his opponents.

What he did today will bode very well for his future performances under match pressure... and my professional assessment is that he will "get there' way faster than Der_Echte did.

It was great fun today! Hopefully I'm gonna be able to build on the recent work on my fundamentals and achieve higher levels of actual play soon. I haven't gotten around to really summarize our training today yet, but on first impression I just can't get over how incredibly well you react to balls. My mind is still just overwhelmed by how many shots I thought you had no chance of reaching were hit back to me lol. I need to develop more efficient movement like you for sure.

What you just mentioned there is something that I've been working on quite a bit lately as well. Hitting the ball with my feet is what I call it. On first glance it seems to be just another phrase for better footwork, which certainly is a major part of it and definitely helps with getting balls into my strike zone, but another big part is to back and forward swing with my feet (and really legs and hips) as well. I used to always try to make a big, powerful swing with my arm and waist, but now I'm trying to focus on finding the ball with my feet and then execute the swing with my hips/legs. As you can imagine, on a sudden wide ball I wouldn't be able to get to the ball and then backswing a lot with my hip, so as a consequent, I wouldn't backswing much with my arm either resulting in a smaller stroke. When I have the time, I would simply rotate my hips more and my arm swing will naturally get bigger as well for a more powerful attack.

I think it's pretty cool to open a thread like this. And yeah I think from both his training footage and his attention to detail on technique, he probably has skills to beat 99% of the forum members here.
I can assure you that's not the case lol. It'll take a while before I can translate my work on technique into actually winning points, I have no illusions about that. As @Der_Echte would put it, my technique is probably a level or two higher than my play currently.

I'm the type of guy who likes to make plans and stick to it when I set my mind on doing something though, and my plan right now is to get the basic techniques right in progressively more complicated environment, ensuring competency at each stage before moving on to the next. @Der_Echte feels my FH is pretty solid now, but I'm not yet satisfied with my FH training. OTOH, I'm reasonably satisfied with my BH form now, including with foot work, and will next work on maintaining the form against balls of varying pace and spin. As he has alluded to, against both topspins and backspins I still struggle with pace changes e.g. fast long backspins and floaty topspins. Both of these things will be crucial in executing my shots in actual game situations.

Even 5 or 6 years ago, no one in their right mind would accuse me of having efficient match footwork or any real footwork.

When I started to help people is when it changed, also dropping from 250 to under 200 in weight helped some.

It is proof I am slow to get there, took me 10 yrs to translate footwork into something in matches.

Many players take 1-2 years to translate the areas of improvement in training into performance in those areas in tourney match play.

@dingyibvs clearly will not take as long as me or the average to make his gains into competitive level.

As for @dingyibvs not being satisfied with the development of his base fh... I can understand why he is saying this... but there are zero serious flaws with his rally fh nor his at the table fh.

When I broke out the .5mm sponged LP bat and chopped, he could do both a low to medium spin slow ball vs a dead ball and a crushing topspin loaded fast loop with power AND consistency.

That alone shows top ten percent plus base and applied level of fh.

Maybe @dingyibvs could develop a slow heavy topspin... would help him vs the heavy underspin pushes from serve, but overall @dingyibvs is a player with instinctive inclinations to play an open topspin rally or power game... so naturally, developing serves and receives to get into, control, and win such rallies is sensible.

Make no mistake, @dingyibvs is very aware of what is going on and where/how he wants to go.

congrats to @dingyibvs , @Der_Echte has given you some cred. Soon from garage to club to league. When, my friend?
I play in clubs pretty often, usually once or twice a week. We were actually planning to meet in the Pleasanton club yesterday before changing plans. The club I get coaching at, the Alameda club, is another place I play at often. I usually stay after coaching sessions to play with the guys there.

As for league I used to play a couple times a week, but I haven't played in a few months. All the ones near me are on weekday nights and I try to conserve my energy for practice sessions and soccer which are also on weekdays. My practice partner is gonna be occupied starting next month so he'll be taking some time off from TT for a while, I'll probably go play some league then. The Monday league should work well for me, as I have soccer on Thursdays and I prefer not to tire my legs out for the Wednesday league before that, and my legs will be too sore to play in Friday leagues.
