Remember the name 'Masato Shiono'! Today on the 22nd June, more unexpected results took place at the 2013 Japan Open ITTF World Tour making this the most unpredictable event of the year as Jun Mizutani, Wang Liqin and Koki Niwa were all eliminated at the quarter final stages.

On route to the quarter final stages Japan's Masato Shiono defeated no.1 seed Chunag Chih Yuan, compatriot Kenta Matsudaira and Li Hu of Singapore. In the quarter finals of the men's singles event defensive player Masato faced team mate Koki Niwa. Koki won the first set, however new kid on the block Masato found his form to win the next 4 sets (11-7,11-5,11-6,11-5). What is formidable about the Japanese stars game is his attacking ablity. His combination of defensive and attacking skills mimics that of Korea's Joo Se Hyuk which allows him to really confuse his opponents game. Japan's new rising defensive player will certainly have an impressive world ranking on the July ITTF World Rankings. Can Masato go on to win the title?

Elsewhere, host nations Jun Mizutani stumbled out at the Quarter Final hurdle in an epic 7 set thriller against the 2013 World Doubles Champion Chen Chien-An of Chinese Taipei. Jun Mizutani raced into a 2-0 lead however Chen started the climb back slowly. Jun furthered the scoreline by 3 games to 1 however Chen fought back to win the next 3 sets ( full match score: 7-11,5-11,11-6,8-11,11-4,11-8,11-9).

3 time world Champion Wang Liqin lost to young rising team mate Xu Chenhao of China in a close 6 sets. Xu shouted cho at every point 1, fighting his hardest to win by 4 games to 2 (11-8,11-7,11-13,12-10,7-11,11-8).

The only quarter final to go accordingly to ranking was Korea's Kim Minseok against Japan's Masataka Morizono. Kim won in 6 sets and will now face Xu Chenhao.

The Japan Open World Tour has shown clearly that ranking doesn't mean everything in table tennis!
