ML's change of tactics is really quite brilliant. He completely changed his style to a modern BH dominant style, starting with the reverse service, then standing near the center of the table as his default ready position for both 3rd ball and service receives, followed by maintaining close to the table. This allowed him to play the ball early and win some points with speed and angles borrowing the speed of the opponent. This also allowed him to play more BH flicks which he did more than usual but still not as much as your typical modern player.

LGY didn't seem to change much, it was just his day. He plays an extremely speed based style, with flatter balls and taking them early. It's a high-risk high-reward style, which lacks stability and consistency, thus the "choking" episodes. When he's on though, he's really on, as no one can keep up with that level of speed except FZD usually. We'll have to see if he can maintain this form against ML tonight.

It's widely known and reported even in China. I wrote about it in 2019 and 2021. ITTF couldn't do anything as they change their age before registration, but CTTA started cracking them down. CTTA ran a strict bone age test for all CNT participants for YOG 2014 held in Nanjing which FZD participated and that was Cai Zhenhua's KPI. Guess what for YOG 2018 which WCQ participated? Nothing as Cai Zhenhua was out the door already.

I feel like ML just decided to throw caution to the wind and try a completely different style to his usual have. WCQ seemed to have figured out his usual style and ML just couldn't beat him. I did wonder, though, whether ML called ZJK the night before for some backhand tips!

One of the things that I have found fascinating and not so much discussed is the influence of Wang Hao on Ma Long's game on general. Maybe I am completely speculating, but I feel that Ma Long has played with more balance and even in losses more confidence than before. Ma Long lost more but he is still never destroyed in those losses other than vs WCQ. Even the Liang Jingkun loss, I feel Ma Long demonstrated that he clearly still has his pride. Even aging, his period with Wang Hao had been fruitful.

Togami and Tanaka have mentioned how it was easier than they thought to hold rallies with WCQ in interviews after WTTC 2021 and ATTC 2023, respectively.

WCT has also talked about how he was overwhelmed by WCQ in 3rd ball and speed in the first 2 games before finding his way around them after Asian Games 2022. Tieba users even teased WCQ for having trouble to keep up with WCT in rallies.

As I pointed out last week, he becomes more vulnerable if you manage to find a way around his serve. AJH did just that in the group match.

Easier to hold rallies with "when he's not playing well". He outplayed JWJ, a rally player in the rallies just a few days ago. It comes down to tactics, form and strategy. I'm curious what's the assessment of the players who's had close matches and wins against FZD in the past 2 years. Surely Fan looked easier to hold rallies with in those matches. It's easy to say in retrospect.

The spin probably just wasn't there. Sometimes, under tension you are looking for spin but maybe ML just didn't contact the ball so great. It's not like many people not named Hugo are flicking WCQ's serves so he probably doesn't feel that a lot in matches.

Also, it looked like Ma Long put more side spin on the flick rather than topspin

Tbh I always felt that WCQ always relied on his hidden serves and once someone really deciphers them, he is nowhere as strong as Ma Long, Zhang Jike or Fan Zhendong in terms of technical ability. He also tends to hit very flat trajectories which are always a liability in big matches. All the past great champions have huge amounts of arc in their shot to ensure max safety during crucial moments.

But it's an interesting period for sure because Fan Zhendong seems to be a bit lost even when he is having the most advanced topspin technique in the world, and Ma Long's body condition is always a question mark.

As FZD looked back on 2019 in 3/2020, his technique was no longer the most advanced and there were many players capable of playing like him.

Ma Long definately abused the simplest tactic in the game aginst WCQ; one backhand and one wide forehand. You could see that WCQ struggled with any forehand not right where he wanted it.

LGY just used his deceptive placement against Harimoto, especially with his backhand.

Sometimes simple works.
