Thanks for the information. Do you know if they adopted this as the Tokyo 2020 strategy, or are they still using Tokyo 2019 to decide this. Does the ITTF, THE Japanese table tennis association or the IOC decide the rules?

It was first proposed in late 2015 by Richard Scruton, Technical Delegate for Rio 2016(Sports Manager for London 2012) and discussed in multiple Olympic and Paralympic commission meetings.

Harimoto v Pitchford
Good start in G1
G2 and 3. Pitchford serves very tight. Hari can only do short push receive. Few Chiquita’s attempt result in net misses. When opening with FH he always go for the strong shot with low arc and makes a net miss. G4 Hari is behind but in a last ditch effort plays more positively and manages a few good receives and edges Pitchford. He gets a good start in G5 leading 5-3 and 6-4 but on his serve doesn’t play well the next two points then he chokes again

Yoshimura v Drinkhall roller coaster -2 4 7 -3 -9 no last minute comeback too many mistakes. Drinkhall took more risks trying to pivot and play a lot more FH

Niwa is a disaster.G1 8-10 why does he need to try a chop block? Flying away from the table. G2 far behind he attempts a miracle comeback but stops at 9. G3 is a disaster. Too many mistakes. He made a lot of mistakes in the short game ( balls popping up too much...) and many times Pitchford pushed long aggressively on receive, Niwa always wanted to pivot and attack strongly but was always late and made a net miss. So in this two usually strong trademark areas he was dominated. OTOH every ball which was a bit weak and or a little high in his BH was met with a strong punch from which he won the point more than 80# of the time

Japan very disappointing and there was not much to cheer about. Not many people in the audience and they were not very loud either

The 3rd singles players will now play a minimum of 2 matches. The role of the 3rd player is now even more important than that of the 2nd player, that teams may field their 2nd strongest player as the 3rd player.

Harimoto mentioned in the press conference after the draw that England was going to be a difficult match, and given Niwa's current state and Mizutani's absence...

Mizutani was absent due to lower back pain and Kurashima doesn't know if he will be able to play. Kurashima points out he can't get the flow going if Harimoto loses in the clash between the aces.

　男子１次リーグ初戦が行われ、前回２位の日本はイングランドに１－３で敗れて黒星発進となった。第１試合のダブルスは丹羽孝希（スヴェンソン）、吉村真晴（名古屋ダイハツ）組がドリンクホール、ジャービス組に勝利。第２試合は世界ランク５位の張本智和（木下グループ）が同１９位のリアム・ピッチフォードに２－３で惜敗し、第３試合は吉村がドリンクホール、第４試合は丹羽がピッチフォードにそれぞれ敗れた。

　リオデジャネイロ五輪銅メダリストで世界ランク１３位の水谷隼（３０）＝木下グループ＝の姿は、コートにもベンチにもなかった。倉嶋洋介監督によれば、水谷は腰痛で欠場したといい、今大会中の出場は「わからない」という。

　イングランド戦は当初水谷と吉村をダブルスで起用する予定だったが、急きょ丹羽にオーダーを変更。吉村、丹羽はリオ五輪団体戦などでも組んだ経験もあり、ダブルスで先取したものの、シングルスでは嫌な流れを断ち切ることができなかった。

　指揮官は「この大会に向けて準備してきたつもりだったが、初戦はいろいろなプレッシャーもあった。うまくいかないこともあって、これが今のチームの現状だと思う」と厳しい見立てを示した。また、エース起用した張本が過去１勝２敗と分の悪いピッチフォードに勝ち切れなかったことも響いたが、「エース対決で負けると流れがつくれない」と１６歳の若きエースに奮起を促した。

　日本はオーストリア、イングランドと同組で、３チーム中上位２チームが準々決勝に進む。

　開幕し、男子で世界チームランク２位の日本は同１１位のイングランドに１―３で敗れた。

　日本は第１試合のダブルスに丹羽孝希（２５）＝スヴェンソン＝、吉村真晴（２６）＝名古屋ダイハツ＝組で臨んだ。１７年世界選手権銅メダルペアがストレート勝ちを収めて好発進したが、第２試合で張本智和（１６）＝木下グループ＝がリアム・ピッチフォードとのエース対決に２―３で惜敗。第３試合も吉村が２―３でドリンクホールに競り負け、第４試合では丹羽が過去４戦全勝だったピッチフォードに敗れた。

　日本は大会前に大黒柱の水谷隼（３０）＝木下グループ＝が腰を痛め、大事を取って初戦を欠場するアクシデントも響いた。昨年の世界選手権団体戦に続き、因縁の相手のイングランドに対し、ピッチフォードに２勝を許し、シングルス３試合を落としての黒星発進。張本は「厳しい相手ではあると思ったけど、１―３で負けると思ってなかったので悔しい」と肩を落とした。

　１７時からはオーストリアとの２試合目に臨む。決勝トーナメント進出へ、負けられない試合だ。丹羽は「今はまだ悔しい気持ちが残ってるけど、少し時間があるのでしっかり切り替えたい」と前を向いた。

"I knew it'd be a tough match but I didn't think I'd lose 1-3," said Harimoto.

　「卓球・Ｗ杯団体戦」（６日、東京体育館）

　男子１次リーグ初戦が行われ、前回２位の日本はイングランドに１－３で敗れ、黒星発進となった。第２試合のシングルスでは、エースで世界ランク５位の張本智和（１６）＝木下グループ＝が、同１９位のリアム・ピッチフォードに２－３で惜敗。日本はオーストリア、イングランドと同組で、３チーム中上位２チームが準々決勝に進む。

　またも天敵の“張本キラー”に屈した。張本は過去１勝２敗のピッチフォードに対し第１ゲームを先取し、２ゲーム続けて取り返された後、２－２としてフルゲームに持ち込んだが、最終ゲームは８－７から４連続失点で苦杯。エースの役割を果たせず、「試合の中で流れの傾きが激しくて、（３ゲーム先取の）５ゲーム制の中で自信を持ってプレーできなかった。（勝機は）五分五分だったが、相手の方が落ち着いていた」と肩を落とした。

　イングランドは昨年の世界選手権団体戦１次リーグで敗れた因縁の相手。張本自身も昨年２月のＷ杯団体戦、同４月の世界選手権団体戦と２大会続けてピッチフォードに０－３で完敗する屈辱を味わっており「因縁のある対戦相手。リベンジしたい気持ちはある」と期していたが、返り討ちにされた。「厳しい相手と思っていたが、（チームとして）１－３で負けるとは思っていなかったので悔しい」とうつむいた。

　第１試合のダブルスは丹羽孝希（スヴェンソン）、吉村真晴（名古屋ダイハツ）組がドリンクホール、ジャービス組に勝利。第３試合は吉村がドリンクホールに敗れ、第４試合は丹羽がピッチフォードに敗れた。

"The flow of the match was intense and I couldn't play with confidence in a best-of-5. It was 50-50, but the opponent was calm," said Harimoto.

日本男子がまさかの黒星スタートだ。世界チームランク2位の日本が同11位イングランドに1－3で敗戦。5日ほど前からの腰痛で水谷隼（30＝木下グループ）が欠場したため第1試合のダブルスは急きょ、16年リオデジャネイロ五輪で銀メダルを獲得した団体戦コンビ丹羽孝希（25＝スヴェンソン）吉村真晴（26＝名古屋ダイハツ）組が挑み、1勝を先取した。

しかし、続く張本智和（16＝木下グループ）がエース対決を落とし、そこからリズムを取り戻せず、3連敗を喫した。

試合後、張本は「（7ゲームの）シングルスと違い、5ゲームですぐに試合が終わってしまう中、自信を持っていけなかった。まだ団体戦の戦い方ができていない」と反省した。

今大会は東京五輪団体戦と同じ試合形式で、初戦のダブルスと4つのシングルス戦で構成され、先に3勝した方が勝利となる。全試合で5ゲームマッチ。

東京体育館も本番と同じ会場で、今大会は東京五輪・パラリンピック大会組織委員会によるテスト大会にも設定されている。張本は「ヨーロッパのワールドツアーに比べ（照明の影響で）卓球台が暗く感じる。早くなれていかないといけない」と話した。

予選リーグは3チーム×4組で行われ、各組上位2チームが7日から行われる決勝トーナメント準々決勝に進出する。

Harimoto says the table feels darker due to the lighting compared to the World Tours in Europe and that he'll have to get used to it quickly.

丹羽は「ダブルスを取れて、ピッチフォード選手に今まで負けたことなかったんですけど、相手が今日は素晴らしいプレーしてきましたし、自分も良いプレーが出来なかったので、非常に悔しいです」と試合を振り返った。

3番で敗れた吉村は「自分の試合は出だしが悪くて。スタートで自分の中に迷いがあって、なかなか自分のプレーが出来ずに流れてしまったので、2ゲーム目以降もちょっと迷いのあるプレーになってしまったかなと思います」と自身の敗因を語った。

張本は「（7ゲームマッチの）シングルスと違う5ゲームというすぐに試合が終わってしまう中で、自信を持ってプレーできなかったというのは、まだ団体戦の戦い方ができてないなと思います」と団体戦への課題を口にした。

Don't know like You guys but schedule like that always piss me off. I just wanna say that on table 1 i would prefer to watch Korea vs Sweden or even Germany vs Brazil than China where final score is very predictable.

Had Japan played Austria first, things would've been better.

Overall, European men have a better time than their Asian counterparts here in Japan.
