Is this the worst pro serve in the world? It literally looks like he is not even trying. What is the point of him doing this serve?
Harimoto sometimes does this too. I think they do the simple backhand serve when their normal serves aren’t working in a match. The simplicity of the serve may throw off their opponent

He won every point in that video! yeah, worst serve ever! 😂
Seriously tho, just analysing it point by point gives the answer, I'm not gonna do it cos it's too much to write but actually analysing those points is a good lesson me thinks

It's hard to do much with a dead ball serve. It's a common and effective tactic for players who are good at blocking and countering to bait their opponents into making relatively weak or predictable attacks.

I use that serve all the time. First of all, it isn't necessarily a dead ball. It is a plain backspin vs no spin serve. The backhand use makes control easy and reduces recovery demands especially if you are a two-winged player who likes to open backhand or push backhand. Finally the lack of sidespin makes it easier to read what the opponent has done to the ball. While the opponent has more return options, they can cannot use any existing sidespin to create deceptive or wide placements and spins. And usually if the serve is heavy backspin, most attacking returns will have topspin that can be countered aggressively. If a no spin serve, you can calibrate what is added to the ball and play your third ball stroke with confidence. While the errors don't tend to win points outright, the third ball tends to be predictable.

Dima does this serve quite a bit as well. People construe it as giving up but sometimes, when you play someone who is rushing you, this enables you to slow down the game and simplify the reads while losing the ability to easily generate major return errors.

That said, I still score quite a few points off the backspin vs no spin misread when I serve this.

CHINA CHAMPIONS are INFERIOR SERVERS ALL.
Аny serving to the table centre spot is deficient of attacking potency. Unworthy service in every way.
