Yokoi has a very nasty backhand topspin and it will be a while before we know here true level.

Cheng I Ching is a good player, as is Qian Tianyi and Miwa Harimoto. At worst, three players will pass Ito and she won't get to play 2024. If that happens, it is a good thing for Japan. But no one is taking away her Olympic medals. Hitting is high risk, high reward. No one wins all the time. And Ito is still one of the top 3 in Japan and has the best record in international play, despite all the hype that has surrounded her compatriots. The only person with similar achievements is Hirano. Neither of them would trade away what they have achieved to avoid their recent struggles and Hirano has been due for an opening for over a year now, her strength is clear, she finally is getting some wins.. Ito needs moments like this to regrow - there is nothing bad about it. It is hard to take risks with your game when everything is going well.
To keep things in perspective, Cheng I-Ching's win over Mima in T-League was a 1-game victory match which Mima subsequently avenged in R16 of WTT Contender Amman. Additionally, Cheng I-Ching beat *both* Hirano and Hayata and WTT Star Contender Goa. And as great as Miwa is and wlll be, she has yet to win a WTT tournament. She will have a great shot as the top seed in the next Feeder. But it's easy to forget that Mima is the youngest female to have ever won a senior Pro tournament.... a record that cannot be broken by Miwa.

Her loss today was disappointing having 2 game points in game 2 and 2 match points in game 5. She still has issues with BH consistency. And her timing on the FH is sometimes off. I understand that she does need to take risks when playing the CNT, but she's giving away too many points. I know it would be a painful thing for her to consider, but maybe it's best for her to make a change like how Miu Hirano changed her coach and got considerably better.

I am happy for her that she's secured a WTTC spot. The competition for an Olympic spot in Japan is fierce and she might not make it. But whatever the case, she will always have the gold, silver, and bronze Olympic medals she got in Tokyo.

i agree, she's still young and talented, everything is still possible. Ito has always said she wants to be creative and innovative to surprise her opponents. Which she does, but errors are too high because she hasn't time to perfect enough those new tactics/ shots. Maybe she will do some compromises / change her approach ?

still a fan of Mima, but I still think Miwa is just too good and will dominate the whole sport.
They won't make the same mistakes they made with Tomokazu and even in developing Tomokazu, they are still learning. Thankfully Japan is deep enough at the ladies to challenge her. The thing about dominating the sport is that it comes with its own pressures and those pressures should not be underestimated.

Damn, someone call child protective services, there's abuse of a minor going on in the Infinity Arena.
There's only 1 player that can threaten Ma Long these days imo and it's Wang Chuqin...

Loving this tournament so far. Outstanding performance by many.

Wang Yidi is out.
Chen Meng is out.
Hayata is out.
Falck is out.
Felix just beat Lin.

It can’t get any wilder unless Felix beat Ma Long in the quarterfinal

I really hope we get to see a WCQ vs ML match. ML seems to have entered a new form, I wonder if WCQ can still beat him.

Ma Long is playing smarter and smarter.

I just watched his match against Lin Shidong.

I can’t count how many minor mistakes Lin had made.

For a solid athlete like Lin, it tells you that Ma Long read his game to a great depth and can utilise many techniques in his arsenal to make Lin’s game frustrating 😫

TBH, Ma Long probably only performed at 85%. His dominance in the match was scary.

One advantage of Wang Chuqin is that he knows Ma Long’s game better than Lin.

His FH is more solid than Lin.
Wang’s BH tends to hit at a wide angle. For a lefty like him, he can make Ma Long’s game miserable.

But after all, I am still curious about WCQ’s blade 🤨

didn't see the match. Seeing the result. Mima lost 10-12 in the decider against QIAN Tianyi.
can't say i'm surprised. Mima's results have been a bit downhill for a while.

i think there is too much pressure on her, as she is seeing many rivals emerging in Japan, even KIHARA is in front of her in the race to Paris, and Miwa HARIMOTO will soon become Japan N1...
Curious whether your thoughts are still the same after Hayata lost to a currently even less notable opponent.

yes its surprising. i saw G5 and HAYATA was unrecognizable. dunno what happened. doesn't bode well for WTTC

ITO lost to a more worthy opponent, she made a comeback in G4 while the other had quite some luck but G5 the reverse happened as she wasted her chance

as a JNT fan, now i must hope that HIRANO confirms against ZHANG Rui
ISHIKAWA still in v a korean girl JOO next. she had a good draw so far

HARIMOTO v ARUNA and TOGAMI v Truls

ps i always troll you on DIAZ but she got a good win today v CHENG I Ching

Usually, how a player does against Ishikawa is usually a good way to tell whether the player is solid or not.

So when a younger Diaz played Ishikawa one time, I had a lower opinion of Diaz's game back then and I thought Kasumi would destroy her badly.

But weirdly, the games were close/interesting, Kasumi actually lost one of them, maybe was close to losing two. This I think was still when we had best of seven but I could be misremembering...

That was when I decided that maybe I underestimated her, that she clearly has the talent, it is just a matter of her dedication to being maximally fit and improving with age. Switching coach, traveling a bit more to play, I think she is invested now, so let's see how far she gets. She will always have the top 10 ranking or close because of continental results, but I do think with dedication, she can be competitive with everyone except maybe the top Chinese/Japanese but even then, that will just be what it is.

Don't use matches without stakes to judge the true nature of a matchup. If FZD plays ML in this event in the final, FZD will win, though I suspect the real threat is LJK.

Fan Zhendong is not in great form recently, at least not compared to ML, like what you said he might even lose to LJK first or even someone else...

That's a fair assessment, let's see how the matches play out. He beat just about everyone on the CNT in the trials other than Ma Long. Ma Long needs the rating points here to keep his ranking more than anyone else, as he has a bunch going off in April (Olympic Games).

Apologies for my lack of knowledge but can anyone tell me why CNT do not speak English? After winning the match during interview they are supported by interpreter in other sports even if you are not native English but you rock in particular disciplines and are famous at least you are able to communicate in English and replay some basic questions (even doing some mistakes but everyone can undestand).
Since WTT is ruled by China I don't think they care for speaking english...
