Final WTT tournament before the Olympics. LYJ is top seed in MS, and Hina Hayata is top seed in WS. Not sure why, but Miu Hirano was on the player's list but looks to have with withdrawn. LGY and CXT from China managed to get wildcards to check in on the competition and report back to the CNT. This tournament also marks the return of Han Ying at WR#32. We also get top notch defenders Sato and Hashimoto who will be going through qualifiers.

Uda is also back in this tournament but will have to go through qualifying again, even after his superb Tunis performance. I see the Koreans will be at this tournament, backing CDS to win the whole thing (was close to calling it with Uda winning Tunis, if you don’t believe me scroll through the Tunis thread)

I backed Uda as the bonus player at wolrdrankingtabletennis
Also backed Odo

That’s why I’m doing so well in the ranking

Looks like Hayata pulled out as well.

Is this the event where her and Harimoto need to win XD to jump to 3rd for Olympic seeding?
You mean second? I believe they are already third. To have a chance of being second, I think so but I haven't followed the details so others may know better.

Yes sorry second.

Calling @zeio, do you know the status of the race between Hayata/Hari vs LJH/SYB?

JPN (3605 pts) is behind KOR (4110 pts) at this point (505 pts apart). Both pairs have no expiring points before 7/16. Not enough points from the pool for JPN to catch up even if they win here (4100 pts vs 4110 pts). Losing the final 0-3 in Rio hurt a lot.

There is a possibility for them to surpass the S. Koreans, but the S. Koreans would have to lose early as I mentioned in the Tunis thread. The 3605 does not include the winning XD at Tunis. So they drop 105 (current low) and add 400 for a net gain of 295. 3605 + 295 = 3900 so the gap narrows. to 210. That gap can be covered , for example, if Tomo/Hayata win the title and Lim/Shin lose in the SF in Bangkok. That's why Hayata is signed up for XD here even though she's no longer signed up for Singles (exactly as in Tunis). There will be no Hayata vs. CXT for the CNT to analyze :).

Oh, yeah, it's only Monday. So as long as KOR reaches the final here, the 2nd seed will be secured.

Suppose KOR reaches the final and JPN wins:
KOR 4110-210+420=4320
JPN 3605-105-280+400+600=4220

so one incident that occurred in Tunis and solved in Bangkok

womens doubles finalist trophy from Tunis given to one of the mens
mens doubles finalist trophy given to one of the womens

luckily both players are in Bangkok, so they had exchanged trophies accordingly.

For a moment, the pair become, mixed doubles lol

I wonder how many people are following the contender (last week) and star contender today, as serious as "last year"?

No poll option available, but it would be interesting to know, especially since Star Contender now has demoted to a "lower tiered" competition with finals, champion, smash above it.

Imo, with OG just a fortnight away, this star contender is probably also going to be the start of a new era of star contenders that is not as glamorous with world elite participating compared to the previous 2 years of WTT as we know it.

I have not been able to watch much lately, but I haven't been too interested either to be honest. The edited videos come out so late you are already spoiled if you catch a livestream so I don't even bother anymore with catching up on highlights. I did watch the finals highlights, though and got annoyed again when they skipped points in the men's singles final. The past months have become a blur for me with so many tournaments happening.

It's obvious that those that are playing in events that are less than six weeks leading up to the commencement of the Olympics are throwing out Hail Marys for ranking points. Not really much of an issue per se, next year people that want points will come around as usual, and guys outside of the top 30 will get more chance to play. It was always destined to be a "mid" event, the prominence it had in the last 2 years was because there weren't enough Smash and Champions events. Since the high tier events have slowly rolled in this year, SCT will find it's rightful place.
