A diagonal view from the forehand corner always seems much nicer than a birds-eye view from directly behind one of the players. Of course, this get's to be a little iffy with lefties, but if you get then angle just right, then it works out still. From the behind the back view, it's hard to really judge the intensity of the rallies and such.

"How would you make the sport of Table Tennis more media friendly and exciting to the public"

I would make it more media friendly and exciting to the public by donating resources, and introducing the sport to new people. Most people that play need better equipment and training. I personally have difficulty going to my club since it is far away. If the USATT or ITTF could made clubs smaller and more of them people so people would not have to travel so far. Another thing the USATT or ITTF could do is send suggestions to high schools to see if their school has people interested in starting a school club, because my school and most schools do not a clubs and i know people that would love to be in one, but i do not know everyone in my school so i could not find enough people by myself.

"How would you make the sport of Table Tennis more media friendly and exciting to the public"

I like dynamic camera angle as member Smati told in his post before me, and with all my heart, I support that great idea .... But here in Croatia first of all we must bring TT on TV. Curently, in Croatia, nacionals or others TV station don't broadcasting TT at all.
Various countries have different approaches in the TV coverage of the table tennis. It depends greatly on their tradition, current popularity of their national team and charisma of individual players on the team.
In general, to achieve the popularity of any sport, which brings investment (money), I think, people use some standard models, of course, if they want that it is their goal.
Large crowds of people can make changes.
What to do, or what table tenis has to be, or what table tennis is still now, or what table tennis brings to us are the main issues on which we must have answers.
I think table tennis is special sport, he has that "something" that many parents can recognize table tennis as a sport where they what to focus their childrem because table tennis brings to us many great values, skills like: concentration, anticipation of events, agility, speed, flexibility, quick decision …… which you can automatically build in other parts of your lifes.
Which you can automatically build in other parts of your lifes ….. is a great true message which can attract a lot of people of all ages.
Ok, now we have LARGE CROWDS of people which can make changes. They automatically brings POPULARITY of the TT. Popularity brins INVESTMENT (Money). Investment brings TV broadcasting. TV broadcasting make the sport of Table Tennis become more media friendly and exciting to the public" because TV bring tournaments, world championships, Olympic Games in each house as a part of regular sports program.
This is a vicious circle that has its own rules, but to enter into it we must have a vision, you must know what table tennis brings to people and you need to talk about it in schools, advertising .... One is sure, silence will not achieve anything.
So, we should educate people in every country, at all levels, about values which table tennis brings to their children and others, of course,.
For this solution will take time but it will bring certain results.
And while this does't happen all of us who love this sport we have YouTube and Internet. I must said that Inernet has contributed a lot to those who already know the value of TT to become more media friendly and exciting to the public. Thanks to the Internet we can always enjoy in it. Smarti (member), for us which already love this way of life brings us dynamic camera angle ….. for us it will mean more media frendly but for others we must have another approach as I said before ….
Greetings from the Croatian. Ivan :)

1.every player play with smile when they are playing table tennis.
2. more Spectacular Pairs play with funny table tennis trick.
3.teach any people about how to play table tennis without any paid.
4.notice your student not to play table tennis with less politeness.
5.reduce the price of table tennis table and blade, this is because in malaysia this such thing is too expensive if you want to get good blade and good table.

"How would you make the sport of Table Tennis more media friendly and exciting to the public?"

1. In my country, the Netherlands, most of the kids are choosing soccer. One of the reason this sport is so popular here is because my country has alot of good soccerplayers.
Same thing in tabletennis, in countries that produce topplayers the popularity of tabletennis improves. Especially China but also Germany are a good example. So bring stars to every country.
2. Promote Tabletennis to children by organising activities. My club organises activities for children in primary school. We 'harvested' alot of young tabletennis players.
3. In the media: I rarely see tabletennis on TV. Only the real tabletennis diehards turn to the internet and personally I think youtubers are doing a pretty good job promoting the sport(TTDaily too ofc ;p). Moreover I agree with Blueberries. The bird-eye angle gives a wrong image of tabletennis. It doesn't look as impressive as a diagonal view from the forehand corner.

And the ITTF should update and re-style their site. It kinda looks cheap and unprofessional tbh. Atleast thats my opinion.

Table tennis can be made more to the public by changing people's perception that table tennis is only a basement recreation activity. Too many people think its just played casually and don't take professional table tennis very seriously. So there needs to be more public outreach in the areas to show people just how demanding and real of a sport it is. In addition, companies should promote more of their products through ads and sponsorships through the media. More clubs/teams should be established throughout cities and schools (perhaps becoming a varsity sport). Overall it's important to have the right resources and coaching staff across the population. And also, equipment has to be made more accessible. I mean, normal people won't take a 100$ "ping pong" racket very seriously. To model off of China, there can be tables put into parks, all around schools, recreational playgrounds and just about everywhere. Perhaps ESPN even should add table tennis to their broadcasting schedule...that would be interesting and very promoting for the world of TT.

A little bit of commercialisation plus a little bit of technical changes !

To start with,I'd say there is considerable awareness regarding the sport of Table Tennis(or "ping pong" as the Yanks say) all over the world as opposed to the popular belief.Even if people don't follow Table Tennis, they atleast know about it owing to the presence of Table Tennis tables in most of the big companies and organisations and due to the regular featuring of the sports in advertisements, videos, video games etc. However, unlike other sports like Soccer,Tennis,Basketball,Golf,it hasn't been able to built anything substantial over this powerful foundation. There are a couple of reasons for that. The main reason is that Table Tennis only gets most coverage in China(of which it is the national sport),Korea,Japan,Sweden and Germany. It's overlooked in most other countries over its more popular counterparts. Also, the sport is considered a "minor" sport,is less valued and so it doesn't get the required credit that it deserves. So,eventually Table Tennis fails to generates the buzz despite of its omnipresence. Also, the fact that it is a indoor sport and is played in a small arena works to its disadvantage. It gives people the opportunity to call it a 'a sport of sissies' or a 'sissy sport'.People(esp. men) refuse to accept the sport as a manly sport because of the lack of requirement of physical strength and readily ridicule it when compared to other sports(I'm being absolutely frank). This is where all other sports win hands down.

"How would you make the sport of Table Tennis more media friendly and exciting to the public"

Below are some modifications, and certain steps that i think ITTF should take for a bright and glowing future of Table Tennis :
1. First of all, make Table Tennis a lucrative sport.Coax the International Table Tennis Federation(ITTF) anyhow to increase the prize money of atleast the major tournaments like World Championships and World Cup and make it comparable to the prize money of Grand Slams in tennis. It'll automatically inject the much needed enthusiasm amongst the Table Tennis players as well as all those associated with sport of Table Tennis in one way or the other. Also,it'll get this sport alot of attention and give a instant spurt to the activities undertaken for the development of Table Tennis. It'll also reduce the attrition rate of players leaving TT and joining other well-known and lucrative sports.
2. Secondly, reduce the cost of Table Tennis equipments like racket, rubber, ball, table, water glue etc. either through mass production or by streamlining the process of production. This will help people from poor countries and weak economic background to join the party and take this sport as a career. It'll give much needed boost to the popularity of the sport, help it being called 'sport of bourgeois',which will eventually work to its advantage and help the sport built a large fanbase. It's obvious, when investments(cost incurred) is reduced and the return on investment multiplies, the sport is bound to flourish.
3. The ITTF - the world governing body of the sport - should market the sport properly.Alongwith being a individual sport,it should also market the sport as a team sport wherein there are events like Men's doubles,Women's doubles,Mix doubles and Team championship. It should also project the sport as requiring considerable physical strength and stamina(which actually is the case) making it at par with other sports. It should conduct camps at places where there is little awareness regarding this sport and recruit high-profile coaches who could make people understand how interesting, how lucrative and how much physically-challenging this sport is.Also,if possible ITTF should hire well-known sportsmen of other sports or other well-renowned personalities who have already played this sport to serve as the brand ambassador of this sport to encourage people to take this sport as a career. Some decent personalities to pick for the welfare of the sport would be George W Bush,Bill and Hillary Clinton,Hu Jintao,Paul McCartney,Susan Sarandon,Tom Hanks,Sacha Baron Cohen,Sachin Tendulkar,Rafael Nadal,Andre Agassi,Anna Kournikova and Wayne Rooney(I do believe that some amount of glamour isn't at all bad for the sport).
4. Introduce something wherein the audience, whether or not they have any player from their nation to support to,will mingle with the other cheering supporters and enjoy and savor the whole experience of watching a TT match. It could be anything, right from a toned down version of cheergirls,to anything remotely interesting and eye-catching,but what basic purpose it should serve is that it should keep spectators glued to their seats.
5. Apart from all these commercialisation and glamourisation activities(which are very vital in this 21st century),ITTF should also keep a tab on the changing trends and adapt the rules of the sport accordingly. All the already implements things like increasing the size of the ball to 40mm,introducing 11-point game, banning speed glues etc. which augur well for the development of the sport.Such important and vital changes also help to revive the game from time to time.
6. ITTF should also set up leagues in all the major countries and also help smaller and lesser known countries to establish their own Table Tennis hierarchy. If necessary it should also set up international academies wherever necessary and supply backward nations with top-quality coaches;this will help them get at par with Table Tennis superpowers like China,Sweden,Germany,Korea,Japan etc. in terms of TT skills.
7. It should also increase the number of Open tournaments that are conducted by ITTF throughout the year which will increase the level of competition in women's as well as in men's categories by leaps and bounds.
8.Lastly,ITTF should shake-up its managerial hierarchy and recruit venerable and learned people at the top posts who are capable of transforming it into a well-organised,economically well-backed,powerful and influential organisation. It should also make tie-ups with governments of powerful countries and collaborate with multinational companies to increase its prominence at the world stage(These things might look trivial at first, but these things are as important as any other technical things i discussed and will eventually bode well for the future of the sport).

Thanks !

Hello Table Tennis Fanatics Alike! I have just read many great ideas and thoughts on this question and have some of my own!

"How would you make the sport of Table Tennis more media friendly and exciting to the public?"
One step at a time! I will make flyers of the table tennis club I belong to and post them at all local schools and public bulletins to make known the availability of the sport in this area. I will raise my kids to know the game as a sport and not a hobby. I will continue to and always talk about the sport of table tennis with enthusiasm to anybody and everybody who comes across my path willing to listen. I will continue to learn more about the game and how I can improve ,while always being available to pass on this knowledge and help someone who wants to learn. I will continue to always have good sportsmanship. I have a dream of having my own retail store and my own table tennis club and I will continue to pursue this dream. I am recently a coach for my son's soccer team through a youth program in this area for kids starting at the age of 3, I will, talk to the administrator of this program, as my kids get older, about a table tennis program through the association. Though these small steps may not bring immediate results to opening everyone's eyes to the sport, or grabbing attention from the media right away... I believe that if all of us table tennis visionaries become proactive and take the small steps needed in our community and lives, then, together, we can possibly make an impact in the world of this sport and reach Our Ultimate Goal! In my current position in life and with my love for the game... this is how I would/will make the sport of Table Tennis more media friendly and exciting to the public.

There have been a lot of good suggestions and sensible answers, which is why I've decided to think outside the box a bit for this one.

It's a crazy idea, but if I were an elite player I would be a hell-raising, trouble-making, trash-talking entertainer. Now I know a lot of players wouldn't be happy about unsporting behaviour, I for one and am very proud of the fact we have so much good sportsmanship in table tennis. But it would it just be an act. The media love a bit of controversy. The public love a character and a bit of drama. In every popular sport there's someone with a unique personality, someone the public and media are interested in for more than just their sporting talent. I'd be like the John McEnroe, Mike Tyson, George Best, Jon Daley or Shane Warne of table tennis.

Now seeing as I'm not an elite player, to make this idea actually work you'd have find a top player who would be up for the role, work in co-operation with the ITTF and come up with some ideas for antics which will make the news without being serious enough to get banned! I guarantee a video of a table tennis match involving over-the-top celebrations, arguing with umpires and ridiculously cocky shots would be a viral hit and YouTube sensation. The idea may seem outrageous but it's not impossible to make happen and I think it would definitely work in getting people more interested and more excited about the sport.

I've mocked up what could be a future back-page headline:

Hi everyone out there

I think it is the responsibility of every table tennis player to encourage other people to participate in the game.

As a teacher I encourage pupils every year to participate in regional interschool championships and during lessons about foreign countries I highlight the crazyness in China concerning table tennis.

The answer in fact, is quite simple: The more people play table tennis, the more people will watch table tennis.
--> Invest in the youth, as they are the future.
--> Use every opportunity to get into local and global media with your country's best player(s).
--> Provide high definition and highly enjoyable table tennis media online.

Maybe the online community could provide the following items:
- Try this - if you dare - video's: Select specific footage with impossible shots and invite people to try it at home, tape it and win a prize with it.
- Find goodlooking female subjects who also understand to hit a ball...
- create local table tennis heroes and invest in online social networking.

I think seeing is believing indeed, so it is up to us to make people see... in order for them to watch.... :)

"How would you make the sport of Table Tennis more media friendly and exciting to the public"

I think the solution is pretty simple. Professional level events need to be broadcasted on a regular basis in television. There really is no substitute for exposure to real table tennis. Its allure will attract those who would have interest. I am generally against any sort of contrived methods pouring money into the sport. It hasn't worked in 30 years and it won't work now. I think the TT community has grown a lot in the last few years just because of youtube videos alone.

I watched a video once of a person who said table tennis is like a tattoo, people dont really wanna show it off but once someone starts everyone will follow along and show theirs off also. So just expose it more there are tons of celebrities that play, if they come out to the open more people would get into it. Also keep uploading videos of these intense matches on youtube that's how I started getting into it.

In the US, TT is taking the back stage for a lot of reasons, most being mentioned already. In a country where power and physical sports takes centre stage (american football, baseball and basketball. Probably naming TT as TTball would help haha. Even squash is converted to racketball. Go figure) - see "the greatest speech ever' thread. TT do need power, but also it takes a lot of finesse..and that probably takes the shine out of it. When the game is not big there, sponsorships takes a dip...and ultimately, growth. Well, at least this what I think.
