October has seen three big tournaments! The month started with the European Championships, a nice warming up for the Europeans who qualified for the Men's World Cup which was held at the end of the month. In between there was a somewhat less known event: The East Asian Games.

After the withdrawals of Timo Boll, the European Championships could be won by anyone.
In the men's event this was Dmitrij Ovtcharov's chance to step up as the no.1 seed. Ovtcharov earlier led Germany to team's Gold by defeating Greece in the final. Team Greece, led by Kalinikos Kreanga earned confidence through Panagiotis Gionis who played surprisingly well and even defeated Vladimir Samsonov in the semi final against Team Belarus.
Gionis repeated his success in the singles event however this time Samsonov was well-prepared; Samsonov beat Gionis and grabbed silver behind Ovtcharov. Bastian Steger took the second bronze medal.
The high amount of new faces in the women's tournament caused a rise of discussions about Chinese-born players representing European countries. Team Romania, expected winner of this stage, was beaten in the final against Germany, who played with many of these unknown players.
In the singles event all four top seeds Shen Yanfei, Viktoria Pavlovich, Li Jiao and Elizabeta Samara had a tough time; all suffered defeat before the semi finals. For the first time since 2002, Sweden earned a gold medal at the European's; Li Fen defeated Germany's Xiaona Shan in the final.
Team China - 2013 East Asian Games
At the table tennis event of the East Asian Games China dominated as usual, winning both the men's and women's team event. One exception however was Yan An, losing to both defenders Yuto Muramatsu and Joo Se Hyuk.
Fan Zhendong fulfilled his job by scoring two points for the team in the final against South Korea. After being 1-3 down in the final against Yan An, he again showed great mentality by winning the cup in the end.
Chen Meng reached the finals by beating Kasumi Ishikawa in the semi finals, before overcoming Zhu Yuling in the final.

Last but certainly not least... The Men's World Cup!
Ma Long not qualifying and Zhang Jike getting injured and replaced by Yan An gave many the hope the Cup would return to European hands this year... People got even more curious when Dmitrij Ovtcharov beat Yan An in the group phase, resulting in Xu Xin and Yan An playing each other in the quarter finals already. Xu Xin beat Yan An and also Dmitrij Ovtcharov after being down 2-3.
On the other side of the draw Vladimir Samsonov surprisingly beats Chuang Chih-Yuan after losing to him the group phase. Samsonov went on to beat Timo Boll to cause a rematch of last year's bronze medal match; but this time for gold. Samsonov played his best but lost in the end to the new champion: Xu Xin.
