Are you sure he is using T80 for BH? Any photos of that? At WTTC I think he was actually using T05 for BH. There were photos that showed that.

Also, for Jakob-Emil:

Here is a thread that lists the equipment that many of the pros use and photos that show reasonable evidence when what a pro is using is not what it seems to be. So there is no real need for a new and separate thread for each separate pro when someone has already done the work or researching what so many different pros are using:

He is using a tenergy05 topsheet on a tenergy80 sponge.

Hahaha. That is a good one fais:

For those of you who didn't know, T05 and T80 have the same exact sponge. The only difference is the topsheet. T64 and T25 also use the same sponge.

The FX rubbers have a different sponge from the regular. But the sponge on all the T--FX rubbers are the same as well. The numbers in the Tenergy series refer to a measurement of the pip configuration in the topsheet.

Thank you for your time and response UpSideDownCarl.

But the thread are a bit outdated

It's true. I linked to the wrong one. There is a thread from this year with newer info.

The last photos I saw, ZJK was using:

Viscaria (custom) H3 Blue Sponge and T05. But the Tenergy rubber's number has changed a few times.

ML was using Hurricane Long 5 W968 (custom) with H3 BS FH and either H3-80 BH or T05 BH (he may have gone back to T05).

FZD was using Butterfly Viscaria with Stiga Infinity handle, H3 BS FH and T05 BH.

When I am at a computer I will see if I can find the most recent, complete thread for this subject. But if someone else can find it, post away:

Giang?

A while ago, I came across an article stating he switched to a tenergy FX? I'm inclined to think the pros vary their equipment for short durations to overcome weaknesses that surface during the course of their play time. Maybe ZJK begins to feel a numbness to/loss of feedback from a regular tenergy which starts to throw off his timings, so he decides to temporarily switch to FX to regain his lost touch. Similar could be said about speed and throw.

While identical in performance, each of the tenergies excel over the others in some small factor, and at higher levels where the game requires extreme precision and touch, couple that with biorhytms ...heck i would be surprised if the top caliber players didn't toggle their equipment.

ZJK switched to T05FX around the time of the 2013 WTTC. But shortly after he went back to T64. At the 2015 WTTC he was using T05.

There is a usefulness to trying something different. Even if you go back to what you used before after a time.

Actually on butterfly.co.jp it says that zjk is still using tenergy 64. You can have a look on the website.

Yeah, even in all about Tenergy they said that ZJK uses Tenergy 64. No reason to hide which version he is using.

It makes sense actually. ZJK also counterhits and blocks a lot with his backhand. When he's in form he makes no mistakes there. His Banana flip is also very fast. The speed is important as a slower Banana Flip just gets whacked past you nowadays because opponents are beginning to expect it.

Yeah. Hard to say what he is using without photos that show. But he has been using Tenergy for years on BH and most of that time he was using T64. Not really sure which version he is using now. But he has used T64 more than anything else.

However, Butterfly sells T64 based on saying he is using it. And they have not changed the website for those periods where he has used something else.

But when someone gets good photos of his BH rubber we will know for sure which Tenergy he is using at that time. A few months later he may change again.

To me it seems that in the new plastic ball era there has been somewhat of a shift from the top players BH rubber from non Tenergy/Tenergy 64 towards Tenergy 05. I can't really support this with stats but this is my observation. I am pretty sure thats even true for the current penholders Xu Xin and Wong Chun Ting.

Would be interested to see if others agree and why or why not this may be happening. I kind of wonder if it has a bit to do with the banana flick technique with plastic ball may be slightly facilitated by T05? Thats definitely pure conjecture.

Dunno 'bout them top pros, but for me you say it quite spot on.. The T05 is better for backhand with the plastic ball, before with the cell ball I used Bryce Speed or T64, but now with the new ball T05 is better :)

I would say it could be the better grab and extra spin of T05 that might make that the case. And yep, it looks like more pros who used other rubbers have been gravitating to T05 in the past 10 months.
