My experience with Ultimate vs Clipper CR was opposite of Carl's friend.

I'm currently in HK if anyone wants a hit. I don't bring my gears with me since I just came from Japan, but will buy necessary stuff in HK and ready to play. I can play any time in the morning/afternoon of 17-19th and at night on 17th and 19th.

This is good to hear. Can you write a bit about how the Ultimate felt to you?

Ultimate felt soft but has enough power and speed even away from the table, say 1.5-2 meter. It has much better feel than clipper cr for me. I had since then acquired China version of Clipper CR which is substantially feel better than regular one. Would compare them again later.

Just got back from Japan, tried Clipper Wood there which was the best I've tried so far. And not just one, several of them felt great. Too bad didn't get to finally buy one.

What's the easiest way to contact osp? I ordered virtuoso off- with anatomic handle and thought that better it would be with flared :/ how can I quickly get them know?

When I ordered from them I emailed Laszlo Peli.

This was the last email I used to contact him.

[email protected]

Here is me cutting and pasting his info from his last email to me:

Laszlo Peli
Marketing Director - OSP Handmade Table Tennis Blades
| m: 00 36 30 200 869 | e: [email protected] | w: http://ospblades.com

But that email he sent was over 2 years ago.

You may try the both the email he sent to me from above email and the email listed in the signature:

[email protected]
[email protected]

Not sure if he is even still with OSP. But that was who I contacted. You could also look on the website for "contact us".

Truthfully, every time I ordered I contacted them first to make sure they could do the customizations I wanted before I ordered.

As a penholder, my experiences may not apply, but I have 4 OSP blades: c-pens all... Expert, Virtuoso-, Ultimate, and early Martin carbon (I think it is a little different than the one now offered, something of a prototype)

I am a club level player, not as advanced as many of regulars here, but have been playing seriously for about 6 years, now getting about 15 hrs weekly table time.

The expert, for a close to table penholder like me was a bit of an odd choice to try. It gave me uncanny feelings that "everything" I hit would land on the table, but it always felt like I never had put-away power against serious opponents. Fun, but never put it into regular day in, day out use.

The Virtuoso- initially felt "ordinary" to me, and that might be a reflection of my playing level at the time. It was the first OSP I purchased. This last year I pulled it out for play against a defense minded Seemiller style opponent that plays better than me and we get together about once a week. I started winning a few more games, probably because I could play with more spin control. I armed it with both Tenergy 05 and Xiom OVA. Xiom felt best for my game. In my mind this blade is a spin machine, if that is the style one wants to play.

The Ultimate is my preferred blade, although I used the Martin for almost a year before reverting back to Ultimate. The difference? Martin carbon feels great and has great accurate feeling speed, but sometimes it felt faster than me! I love it for certain styles of play, especially if playing someone that likes backing off the table. But in returning hard attacking shots up close, my penhold block would sometimes shoot long. It has a discernible lower throw, meaning on my good days it would be great, but if I was off my game it was more difficult to control.

The Ultimate feels wonderful. I feel like I can hit my marks and it has many gears of speed. I like to vary pace with off the bounce hitting and topspin loop drives. Whipping forehand put-aways make a satisfying cracking sound that can get an opponents attention! Rubber of choice is Xiom OVAsia. To me, the Ultimate also has great touch for for the up close to the net game of short push, flick/flip, & working the angles. I should never think of buying another blade...but I sometimes wonder what the Ultimate carbon would play like...:D

What is the optimal weight of a tt blade? Does it depend more on the type of the blade? Is it more universal for any blade? I know that heavier blades are faster than lighter product. Yesterday a guy who wanted to buy my TB ZLF said that when a blade is really light, for example 78g it will be head heavy what I always thought will be the opposite "a lighter blade would be more balanced". One more question: if speed doesn't matter, what's the best waight of the virtuoso off -? I know it mostly depend on preference but is there an ideal weight?

Why the heaviest? For the speed?
Generally heavier means more solid, and in part faster (all else being equal but the weight).

For years I weighed every blade, and when buying it's among the first question I asked. In part also influenced by posts I read on forums.

But now not anymore. I become less picky, and for me weight is just a factor and not high on the list anymore.

I lost count around 200+ blades when I got married and sold just about all my blades.

Now, I'm not buying in frenzy as before. And mostly pick my blade personally at the stores, or buy online in numbers and pick the best and sell the rest.

After hundreds of blades, I kind of get the knack of trying out blade with bouncing ball on the bare blade. Not scientific, but so far it works for me (and those that asked my help to get some for them). When selecting blades I no longer go by weight. Just my feel of the blade.

I know this doesn't help you, or anyone with limited opportunity to try so many blades.

The main thing I want to get across is this: don't get hang up by "ideal weight". The general guideline would be 86-92 gr. Most of the blades are within this. No need to nitpick more.

Better still, get the blade from favorite lists, or from known knowledgeable people. When buying, don't even need to ask for weight. When the blade arrived, just use it, don't weight it. You'll be happier and more content. Get on to other useful factors, such as training, practice, etc.

This is a road less traveled, but I'm enjoying the travel a whole lot more than before.

What is the optimal weight of a tt blade?

A detail about the question that is a little bit revealing about how, the way we humans think and understand reality is different than the way things actually are.

Without the asker realizing it, this question implies that we are all the same. For there to be an optimal weight for a TT blade, we would all need to be the same height, weight, strength and speed. It assumes that everyone has the same length forearm and upper arm. It assumes we are all the same age. It even assumes we are the same level.

Because humans are so varied in all those things we could only talk of an optimal weight blade for each separate individual. But that "optimal" weight would actually also be different blade by blade as well. Like the optimal weight for me with a Viscaria would be a little different than an optimal weight for me with a Virtuoso.

There are too many factors to cover all of what would make a blade an optimal weight for an individual.

However, if the person was strong, healthy and athletic and did not have injuries, the heavies blade the person could use without the weight slowing the player's racket speed and reset speed during the stroke would be what feels best. Heavier blades feel more solid and have better feeling.

For someone with some condition like Tennis Elbow, the lightest setup would be most useful because it would be less likely to aggravate the condition.

For someone very young, like 5-10 years old, a setup that is on the lighter side of things would be more useful.

What is the optimal weight for you, if you were using an OSP Virtuoso?

Let's find out a few things:

1) what is your age?
2) how long have you been playing?
3) what is your overall level?
4) how well do you loop heavy backspin with your FH?
5) how well do you loop heavy backspin with your BH?
6) how well do you counterloop?

These would help determine if you should use a lighter or heavier blade.

Okay. Let's take a 90 gram blade and a 80 gram blade.

Let's take the same set of rubbers. Let's say, T05. It could be any rubber. But let's say T05.

Let's say the two cut rubbers weigh 50 grams each for a total weight of 100 grams.

90grams/100grams
80grams/100grams

The ratio: blade/rubber: which one is a bigger differential?

Answer:

* 100grams - 90grams = 10grams
* 100grams - 80grams = 20grams

If 20 grams is more than 10 grams, and it is, then from a ratio perspective, by adding that rubber, you are actually adding a larger weight ratio to the head of the lighter blade.

Now the truth is, you could have a light blade that is handle heavy and a heavy blade that is handle light. But it is harder to have that than to have a blade that is heavier whose handle is also heavier.

But ultimately, the weight being lower, towards the handle depends on the weight of the handle.

And there are always ways to make a blade's handle heavier. Just ask Der_Echte!
