Ma Lin's already won the olympics. I would be surprised to see LGL sending him there again.

I saw this too. Ma Long goes with a smile to the China Team and shakes hands with Ma Lin and Liu. Then Liu starts talking and Ma Longs smile disappeared.

Dude, you can't call him the best if he doesn't win the big ones... Because if he don't, he is lacking something that Waldner had.. The capability of being great when you need to!

I think Zhank Jike is a better player than Ma Long and LGL is thinking in this way too because (i read somewhere that LGK think) Ma has some self confidence problems while he is playing.

I don't know if the players personality has that much to say if he becomes great or not... If we're comparing to crosscountry skiing, then Norway has Petter Northug, he is really self confident. He knows that he is the best, and he sure knows how to put on a show, but still he is the frontman of the Norwegian team. The audience wants a player that wins big titles, not a player that just plays amazing but loses when it gets tough.

Until Ma Long has achieved a big title like WTTC singles or Olympic championships, he won't have the same status like Waldner or even Persson. It might be sad, and maybe hard to confess, but it's true.

But I don't say that I don't want Ma Long to succeed, ofc I do! I want him to be great, but so far, he is not when thinking of titles...

I still think Ma Long will be on the team, regardless....he's too good to be left out. Liu may alternate him with other players depending on the opponents line out. He may play some matches in the Olympics, same goes to the others too..

Agreed. I believe this is what will happen. Not sure what all the fuss is about. Liu knows who the most likely player to win gold is.

Ma Lin isn't the oldest player on the team. That would be Wang Liqin, but Ma Lin does have the most experience having won Gold in doubles and singles. He's a solid choice when it comes to the mental side of the game. When LGL has a choice between players to choose for the team even or what have you he is always cautious because no matter what his choice is it has to be on the mental side. He is always sure there conditioning is ready for the tournament that's why they're the best in physical shape, but mentally each player differs. You also have to look at it this way. The best coaches know their players both inside and out. They are consistently diving into their game plan and they should know exactly what they player is thinking during any point in the match. That's the best way to give the best possible advice when coaching. So mentally he needs to make sure his players can rise to the bigger titles and actually listen to what he's saying not going with their initial instincts.

I love Ma Long and I think he's a solid choice, but it is also correct of what was said about him proving to LGL. When it comes down to it, Ma has yet to prove his ability to stay mentally tough during the bigger matches.

I think YES ..
So lets see who is playing how..?
Ma Long - destroys EVERYONE ..
Ma Lin - wins but with problems..
Wang Hao - wins without problems
Zhang Jike - wins with problems, often loosing before wins..
Xu Xin - wins without any trouble, he is enjoying the game like it was a training

So ok, lets pick Ma Lin and Zhang Jike for Olympics and Ma Lin will go out in round 2 and Zhang in round 3 ..

No problem, at least China will not win.. finally..
Just too sorry for Ma Long and Xu Xin who would definitely get into finals if they were there..

Kindly I disagree. Ma Lin is the most likely to play in the finals if chosen. ZJK and Ma Long both have equal chances of getting into the finals if they are in it together, but not as likely if they are paired with Ma Lin or Wang Hao. Xu Xin has no motivation to win the Olympics. Sure he'd go all out, but his mental game always lacks in the bigger tournaments. He has some serious talent compared to the other players, but he's lazy at training and hasn't been in the finals for a grand slam tournament in a long while if ever.

Personally I don't disagree with LGL because let's face it, there is no coach more successful than he at the moment, and he has far better insight on the Olympic games than any other coach at the professional level has let alone a bunch of us who prefer to choose our favorites rather than the stats. I'm all for letting Ma Long into the Men's Singles, but I would be lying to myself if I was fully confident he would win. For me it's a 50/50 chance for him winning or even making it to the finals. If it's Wang Hao I'm betting on him winning it because it's his last chance to win a Grand Slam. If it's ZJK I would say it's another 50/50 to get to the finals, but more like 30/70 for him to win if it's Ma Long. Xu Xin I wouldn't expect to make it past the semi finals or more likely the quarter finals as it's the first time he'll ever compete in this tournament.
