Funny that Aya also referred to the hardbat opponent as the "last boss". What is hardbat? Is it long pips? Does every punch just produce a dead ball? (my nightmare)

It looks really hard to play against, but she seems like she is handling it easily.

It's a short pips covering with no sponge. That's why you hear that very distinct wooden sound. You have to be able to play with no or very limited spin. Actually, it's a good (and fun) way to develop control. I think Ayano is now "last boss" for US Open Women's Hardbat :). Excellent video from Ayano, btw.

Both players are using the hardbat in hardbat competitions - short pips no sponge with an all wood bat. The rallies look spinny but relative to inverted, the ball is really dead.

where are the local players? Is this the norm to have more foreign players in US Open than the locals? just curious...
The vast majority of the players are from the US. However, there many strong players from all around the world including Japan, China, S. Korea, and Europe. Amy Wang lost in the SF of WS to the eventual winner Guo Yan, a former CNT player. Kanak Jha of the US beat Ma Jinbao, also from the US, in the Finals of MS.

I was hoping to get a glimpse of the homegrown greats such as: Kanak, Lily, Amy et al...
Not seeing them at all piqued my curiosity.

She shared the news in the last upload. Closing the curtains after 12 years, since junior high school.
