With this win Simon Gauzy has now beaten Chinese players in TWO different World Championships in the Men’s singles event! 🏓💪😀

Which other non-Chinese players have done this since Waldner (and possibly Persson?) in the 80s and 90s? 🤔

Boll beat Chen Qi in 2011 and Zhou Qihao in 2021, but apart from him, I’m not sure that we can find anyone else since the 90s? 🔎
If we're talking 2 different events since the start of the century i'm fairly certain it's just Joo Saehyuk: 2003 vs Ma Lin, 2007 vs Ma Long

For Boll it's 3 events with Zhan Jian 2001, in 3 different decades

Including end of 90's there was Philippe Saive 1999 vs Feng Zhe , 2001 vs Yan Sen

Of course for beating multiple at one event i have to mention Samsonov 1997: Ma Lin > Wang Liqin > Ding Song > Kong Linghui in R32, R16, QF, SF and then lost the final

says Miwa does it!
Makes no sense to select players that way by using trials. Both China and Japan need to stop selecting players this way. I really wanted to see players like XP, Sora, Hashimoto/Sato play.

It feels criminal that Hashimoto/Sato can’t play WD where I reckon they are No 1 ranked Japanese WD players. They did beat Odo/Yokoi last year at WTT Finals. I feel like JNT has something against them and never wants to select them. Hashimoto is also a great singles player as well and deserves more chances. She did beat Zhu Yuling in the final at Contender Taiyuan.
My sentiment exactly. And I so don't get it. I seriously have the impression that given a bit more exposure Hashimoto could break to top 10 and stay there giving the Chinese a really hard time. It looks like giving away victories on the JNT's part.

Big win for gauzy, but I must say I am totally disgusted and appalled by his total lack of fair play.

He definitely does it on purpose, it cannot be a coincidence, whenever he gets awarded a point unfairly, he instantly acts like he deserved it and starts debating if the sky is blue or not.

Congrats for his performance, but what a f***ing clown he is.

What did he do?
He didnt do anything in particular recently. But 8/10 controversial points on YouTube, gauzy is starring on 7 of them! And he always claims the point. He did it again in doubles against franziska and Kaufmann. Although im not quite sure if he did it on purpose or not. Anyway sorry for my rant it was somehow irrelevant. But I just had to get it out of my system

LGY certainly did in the R128 as he said.
Going 6 games with a guy that probably none of us knew before this week was probably a warning sign. I watched the match against Gauzy and it looks like LGY is moving in slow motion and much less explosively compared to what we've seen from him before.

Youssef is thr Egyptian #3 but beat Uda in Tunis recently. You may not have heard of him but he is not a slouch, he and Elbeiali(the #2) beat Lim and An 3-0 in doubles.

Fair enough. I forgot about that Uda match. I still fail to see how the plug hasn't been pulled on LGY yet but even so he didn't look like himself, as well as Gauzy was playing.

One thing to take into consideration is that LGY had to play WCQ if he won. WCQ puts fans in the seats and I would not be surprised if LGY would be ordered to lose the match if they played. WCQ certainly is capable of beating LGY if they play for real and I am certainly capable of being wrong, but maybe LGY wasn't motivated to win.

I get you. Youssef also beat Quadri Aruna a team event in Ghana that wasn't much reported in the West. It will be interesting to see whether he can get better. I do agree LGY didn't look sharp but Gauzy can do that to you too.

After Uda, his match against Karlsson was close despite losing in 3 games (8:11, 10:12, 9:11). Same for the match against F. Lebrun at Singapore Smash 2025 (10:12, 15:17, 5:11).

Facing that kind of player in the majors could drain you a lot even if you come out unscathed.

Yoshimura played fantastic especially in money time... the 2 3rd ball attacks at 8-10 in G4 were exceptional as was the last BH on matchpoint...
Never expected it to be 3-1 to Japan. To see Yoshimura at the end with tears in his eyes after sitting down after the match was finish. You could tell how much this win means to him by beating the No 2 ranked mixed doubles. If they beat No 1 Wang/Sun in the final it’s going to be cinematic.
