Please stop with this video already, it's the 4th time that it's being posted.
It's pretty obvious that he is playing just for fun, not to win the match. He is playing passively many balls, that he could finish them with deadly attacks.

Come on, everybody who watches tt can see that...

It's obvious he wanted to win as well. What you mean is that he didnt bring his A game all the time, but he was clearly trying to win. Pros often play lower rated players in this fashion for various reasons, but it is not because they are not trying to win. It has more to do with their games being primed for a ball quality that amateurs rarely generate. In this case, it was a bad matchup for the style he prefers to play vs lower rated players.

If he really wanted to win, he would play his A game.
Obviously, he tried to win by playing at 50% of his potential, but at the end of the day he didn't really care about the result. He just wanted to have fun and give an opportunity to the girl.

It's very obvious from his reactions and his play.

He underestimated his opposition which was why he didnt play his A game. He wanted to win. And again, this is how many good players play against lower rated opposition. Obviously the match had no real consequences so nothing to really motivate him. But no, he would definitely have preferred to pull it out and almost did.

Judging from the other posters, it really isn't very obvious. If it was, everyone would have noticed it.

He sure wasn't playing full intensity, but he also realized too late to step it up and couldn't correct in time.

I think he was playing light hearted. Maybe not 100% intensity but I think he was trying to win. Even still he almost did. But he lost.

If he played this gal on the tour regularly, I'm sure he'd adjust and she'd never win again. But I'm assuming this is the first time he's ever played her and she has a weird style. Is it so hard to believe a men's player, particularly with with as flawed of a backhand as his (it's really bad for the level he's at comparatively), could lose to a player with a really weird style? No.

I also think he's a bit of a defense mechanism. Easy to play it light hearted and lose. "Ah i wasn't really trying anyways." No he just lost this one match. Doesn't mean she's better. Just means she got him this first to 3 playing an unconventional style.

Now if they were to play 5 more full matches and she wins 3 out of the 5? Okay she's better. But I don't think we believe that would happen. We could see him start to adjust already after her going up 2-0.

My impression as well. It seemed to me he wasn't working his legs the same way I've seen him in tournaments. (For example, lower center of gravity in tournament play.)

Aruna's pimple arc in Japan continues. Kojima is the nightmare of any hobby player and I have plenty of club mates that would go mad playing him. Not sure if they still call him one of the strongest penholders in Japan, but Kenta did a collab with him three years ago and introduced him with that title.
