it just doesn't work that way. training is totally different then competition and you can't really judge someone just by looking at some training vids. a lot of players loose rating points because of nerves, discomfort, unknown or orthodox playstyles, material players like short/medium/long pimples & anti, or just having a bad week or time in their life. in training most of use look great, especially the stuff we upload to yt

Makes sense. Anyway, I think this thread is uselss since I've found some bilibili videos where rating of the players is shown, for USATT it's quite easy to find on YT.

Hi, I post videos on my YT Channel and I was curious what my rating would be (approximately, of course) in China and in USATT systems?
The link for YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@brieftabletennisequipmentr1579

That's not a promotion, I really am curious...
Have you checked out the YouTube channel 'road to 1750TTR'?
He's at appx 1650 now I think and youd probably give each other a good game.

Have you no opportunity to get a rating where you play?

Hey @mihalichtheone, I assume you play competitively in Russia - what is your ranking there? Regarding your question - actually I'd also like to know my rating in TTR and USATT, but that is impossible to get. What however is possible, is to get my percentile in Czech Rep - I can (and I did I think year ago) download the list of all registered players in CR (count N), find myself there (position P), and find how many players are behind me = 100*(N-P)/N % = let's call it percentile ;-) Once you know that, it is safe to say you have approx. the same percentile also in Germany/TTR and in USA/USATT. Finally - come to Germany for the meeting ;-) I can offer to drive you there from CR, unf. only that. ;-)

I play competitively in Russia, the ratings here are completely different and won't say much to anyone outside.

I played in Slovakia in 2019-2020 competitively in leagues, with the help of Facebook I've found the club called VIKTÓRIA PETRŽALKA and played for the time I was in Slovakia. Found that page: https://www.sstz.sk/hraci/16671/liga

I made so many friends there and was delighted to play in leagues as well as in some international tournaments in Austria and Hungary!

Thank you for the invitation to Germany, however due to all the sanctions (and for the fact that I am family person now) I can't participate.

As for the math - lemme ask AI to do it for me and I will return with the answer.

Usually, you need a full video or full highlights of a competitive match to get started asking this question. Then moat of us get a better feel when we see you play a player whose level we know. While different countries have different systems, many players have played in otber countries so if you know your rank and we see what a player who has played in the US with that rank has achieved, then one gets a decent approximation. For example, many people tend to find me to have terrible form and footwork in the abstract and tend to revise their estimates only when they are aware of the strength of rhe people I am playing against.

And of course, the broader the estimate, the more likely it is to be accurate. Narrower estimates require precision that just doesn't exist in these estimations.

All that said, the highlights show you are a solid player, but what that means in a very wide range between 1600 USATT to 2400 USATT or 1300 to 2000 TTR is anyone's guess.

i have two penholders in my club which you look comparable to (in those more relaxed training matches) and they are around 1700 TTR. but it's difficult to judge by videos like this, in training matches & drills i usually play 100-200 TTR better than in real matches ;)

seriously, 1600-2400? His loop is at least USATT 2000+- to me, and the touch is pretty good. Maybe 2100+-100?

Based on what you highlighted in your videos, I see you around 1900-2000 USATT, with some potential good wins with 2000+ players. If you can record at least one good match, it would be easier to rate (number of unforced errors, service returns, etc). Also, your opponents look weaker in the highlights, this can affect the rating as well.

He is showing highlights: that said, the middle of my range shows my estimate would be the same as yours if forced to be precise. However, everyone can hit amazing shots in highlights even me on my good days and if he played a spinny 2100 from Atlanta and lost 0-3, that would change everything. One of my friends said recently that sometimes I play like a young man and he doesn't know what happens on those days. Maybe the highlights are his young man days for all we know. Such is life.

I understand that hightlights do not show every aspect of the player. But his serve, receive, forehand and backhand loop are all pretty decent. His technique does not look like usatt 2200+, but not 1800- either

thanks for the input, everyone!
You're welcome. You are clearly a strong player. Just pointing out how hard it is to tell exactly how strong you are. We could all be way too low because we aren't seeing you against the right level of opposition or vice versa.

In China, the most popular and the only CTTA-approved rating is 开球网/kaiqiuwang (literally "Open Ball Net", or "Game Start Net" in proper English)/ChinaTT (official English name). The OP would be roughly in the range of ChinaTT 1800-2000.

ChinaTT
https://baike.baidu.com/item/ChinaTT/2586271
(Meaning: ChinaTT is short for China Table Tennis Rating System, which quantifies the playing level of table tennis players in the form of ratings, in order to better create a fair and reasonable competitive environment. ChinaTT ratings were launched in 2009 [16] and are currently the only rating system recognized by the Chinese Table Tennis Association [4-5] [8]. The ratings range from 800 to 3000 and are used in 24 provinces in China and 5 countries abroad [16].)

开球网的初始积分怎么计算? (How is the initial rating calculated at ChinaTT?)
http://www.kaiqiu.wang/post/1010.html

(Generally, your initial rating is determined based on your skill level:

400 for beginners;
600 for getting the ball onto the opponent's side of the table;
800 for holding a few rallies;
1000 for receiving a spinny ball;
1200 for mastering pushing, blocking and attacking;
1400 for adding spin, placement and being capable of looping on top of the former basis;
1600 for integrating serves with attacks plus slow loops and power loops;
1800 for consecutive and consistent attacks and footwork, and the ability to trade blows with various rubbers;
2000 for being one of the top players in your local table tennis club;
2200 for having a ranked finish in provincial competitions;
2400 for having a ranked finish in national competitions;
And beyond for being a professional.

There are three ways to assign a rating before your first rating tournament:
1. Start with 0 points;
2. Have the club manager assign a rating for you (if they're familiar with you, they could assign one according to the rules above; if not, practice with them a few times to get a general idea);
3. Assign your own rating – you can assign 1400 or 1800 (generally, someone who has been playing for about two years and knows some serving set plays would be around 1500). The club manager will usually cooperate and assign you a rating. The worst thing about rating-based tournaments isn't encountering someone with 2000 points, but rather sandbaggers with 0 points. After a match, if you lose, you lose 50 points, and if you win, you don't gain many points – keep in mind that winning against someone with a similar rating only adds about 4 points.

Don't be fooled by those short videos that boast 2000 or 2300 rating. Even less skilled comedy content creators like 嗙仓/Bangcang, 重庆冷馆长/Chongqing Upset Club Manager, and 木鱼/Wooden Fish, despite lacking professional backgrounds, spend far more time at the court than the average person. Yet, they rarely exceed 1950 rating. For those playing around three times a week (not formal training), they would typically only reach around 1600 rating after two years.)

watching some videos on bilibili and having an input from my friend in China (he found my videos!) I think I should be roughly 1700-1800 Chinese rating. Thanks for the input @zeio
