Not surprised at all, bigger events are coming up and what you have described is a minor crisis. What will be interesting is whether he has any real solutions, the problem is incredibly difficult, Ma Long endorsing him is not going to solve it.

Odo and Alexis are signed up for Europe Smash. I would guess that the their federations made an agreement that they would only play in Smashes, due to harsher NER rules.
