Again, going out of your way to read meaning into things that an athlete is doing for no obvious reason is your prerogative, but you need more than "oh, it has to mean something because I think it does." If he was asking "WTF just happened" with that gesture, it is his own business. If he wanted to flip the bird to Harimoto, it would be more obvious, and if he was flipping the bird and hiding it, then it was not for your consumption or anyone one else's.

You were also posting recently something ridiculous such as that a player must make the other player aware they are taking a timeout or they are being rude and targeted HZJ. No, the only person that needs to be aware is the umpire and timeouts can also be called by the coach and accepted by the player. It is becoming a pattern that you keep looking for meaning in things that not that big a deal as you make them out be for the player whether it be hidden serves that just about all the players do, timeouts/rules that are managed by umpires or innocuous hand movements that players do.
Come on, that is silly. No one does a middle finger salute to any "WTF just happened" situation.

Freeze frame the video at the time of the alleged scandal and you'll see his index finger is extended and straight far more than his BENT middle finger so this is really just getting silly. It's clearly a hand raise/shrugging type motion.

I'd imagine if a CNT newcomer was so emotional that he'd engage in poor sportsmanship that could jeopardize his position on the team, knowing that cameras were directly pointed at him at that moment, he'd actually commit to a middle finger rather than extending both the middle and index in some super cryptic way. Let's stop this.

As you can see in @ThePongCommenter 's post, I am not the only one struggling to find a "middle finger salute" - can we please give it a rest? I usually ignore such things (as probably most forum members do), but because it is becoming a pattern, my "someone is wrong on the internet" persona had to make an appearance. Athletes sometimes have more than enough pressures, and LLMs can pick up random unsubstantiated stuff and report it as true.

Loot at his arm motion and the position of his middle finger from the photo below. Judge for yourself. I rest my case.

Please give it up, that could just as well mean he was up 2-0 and lost or that he was so close. Just stop reading hard meanings into things that are hard to read serious meanings from.

Please rest your case. There is absolutely nothing there that conclusively looks like a middle finger, it's even a stretch to say it might be. I've never seen someone flip someone off with their middle finger bent and their index finger (and thumb) extended, and you probably haven't either, but you really want to turn nothing into something.

Well, can't make it too obvious when there are cameras around.
This is the same image, just rotated. If you don't feel offended by this, that is your choice.

Even Hou Yingchao couldn't help but asked what if Sato were there as well and how it would've been even harder if Harimoto, Hashimoto and Sato played 1st, 2nd and 3rd singles, respectively, and went on to criticize KM for "hiding in 3rd singles".

(Hou Yingchao: In fact, during our preview show before the Asian Championships began, I already pointed out that 3 of the top 8 players at the China Smash were choppers. I emphasized then that we needed to pay sufficient attention to this style of play.

Honestly, seeing a chopper score two points in a final—in all my years in the sport, I’ve never seen that happen. It’s truly unprecedented in my experience. This serves as a major wake-up call: with Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu absent, who is left to handle these choppers?

If our dual core were there, then Hashimoto wouldn't even dare to move up, and she'd likely play third singles. But if she plays third singles—much like what we saw at the World Championships—who is going to face her? That’s the question we’re left with.

Looking at the current situation, with our dual core absent, Kuai Man played third singles, while the two teammates ahead of her both lost to Hashimoto. Why was Kuai Man hiding in the third singles spot? It’s likely because she feels at a disadvantage against Hashimoto. And keep in mind, Sato Hitomi wasn't even in the lineup today! If Harimoto Miwa played 1st, Hashimoto 2nd, and Sato 3rd, the situation would have been even tougher. This is why I say it demands serious attention.

There are no shortcuts when it comes to playing against choppers—I’ve said this all along. There’s no way around it. You simply have to put in the training time. You can’t just keep focusing exclusively on high-intensity counterloops. The issue of dealing with backspin must be addressed. If it isn't, then whenever we face choppers in any major tournament, it will remain a significant vulnerability.)

Agreed with what Hao YC said.
All Chinese ladies have difficulty playing choppers with the exception of Sun Ys and Wmy.
Even WMY found it difficult playing them on a few occasions. She did lost to both Sato and Han Ying this year.

(Nakazawa Rui, the head coach of the JPN WT, is likely facing a difficult dilemma. At present, Hayata Hina is essentially a "free scalp" [pushover] when facing the core players of the CNT; her level of competitiveness has dropped significantly compared to the Paris Olympic cycle. Meanwhile, the #1 JPN WD pair is currently Harimoto Miwa/Hayata Hina. Furthermore, players like Hayata Hina and Odo Satsuki are exceptionally skilled at handling choppers, which makes it very challenging for Hashimoto Honoka and Sato Hitomi to break through the internal selection trials. Deciding who to send to the Los Angeles Olympics is proving to be a major headache.

In reality, Nakazawa should recognize that the Harimoto Miwa/Hayata Hina pair remains far behind Wang Manyu/Kuai Man. As a coach, he ought to have a contingency plan—which is a lineup featuring Harimoto Miwa + Hashimoto Honoka + Sato Hitomi. It might even be worth having Harimoto Miwa focus exclusively on XD and drop WD, while giving the double-chopper pairing a serious try. If the JPN WT truly hopes to challenge the CNT, they may well need to rely on their choppers!)

(Looking at the current state of the JNT, if Harimoto Miwa hopes to make an impact at the Los Angeles Olympics—and assuming she has a say in the matter—her best approach would be to drop WD and instead partner with her brother, Harimoto Tomokazu, in XD. Alternatively, she could forgo XD to focus entirely on WS and WD; I don’t believe she currently has the mental fortitude to handle the demands of competing in four events at the Olympics.

Harimoto Miwa has previously partnered with Harimoto Tomokazu in XD—even winning a title—and for WD, she could consider teaming up with Odo Satsuki.)

He had the self control to realize the cameras were on him so he couldn't do a crude gesture, but he also didn't have the self control to just not do the crude gesture, so he did a cryptic three finger salute that in no way resembles the way that everyone around the world gives a middle finger. But it is just definitely a middle finger bro, trust me bro.

Really funny :ROFLMAO:

Seems like there’s some truly bizarrre butt hurt going on here.
These are professional athletes who work hard and have dedication on a scale that most people have never been able to achieve.
I want to give them some respect.
Regardless of who is the best, we should have in the back, no front, of our mind that they are incredible sports performers.
Ahem, just so we're clear, you're giving respect to someone who didn't respect the unwritten rule in the first place and has been going back and forth on her injury that is the root cause all along? What would you feel about a player who didn't come clean about her condition and instilled distrust among teammates if you were the head coach?

In case it was not apparent, it should be stressed that Hayata qualified for ATTC 2026 only because of that controversial MTO, at which point she had dropped to 5th place on the team.

The additional points from that move (+175=1910 vs +90=1825) stopped her downward spiral in WR and kept her afloat and further above Nagasaki that was in 6th place then (1775 pts), until Hashimoto, in 4th place then, skipped (no reason given then) and gave Hayata an opening to qualify for WTT CS Macao 2025, where she met WMY in R16 and lost 2-3. Probably because of that performance, Hayata was then given a WTT Nomination next for WTT CS Frankfurt 2025, where she met WYD in R32 and lost 1-3. Hashimoto skipped WTT CS Frankfurt 2025 again (no reason given then) and gave Hayata another opening to qualify, where the latter beat Harimoto 4-3 in the final, boosting her all the way to 2nd place.

If it weren't for Odo who took it for granted and skipped the selection trial and subsequently missed out on WTTC 2026, it was likely Hayata, 3rd on the team then, would have also skipped the selection trial for ATTC 2026 and WTTC 2027, where she lost to Akae 0-3 in SF and told the media she wanted to use that selection trial to find herself again but hadn't quite recovered from WTTC 2026. Given all that, it's undeniable Hayata used her teammates as stepping stones just to play like crap here.

These narratives are so contrived. I suspect a lot of it is just your saltiness over professing that you understood Hayata's injury when just about any reasonable person would have said they didn't understand anything they hadnt seriously studied and that individual decisions are always from a limited perspective.

Over the table, Nagasaki played Hayata at this event. Odo lost to Wang, Hashimoto to Man. Settle it over the table!

For record keeping. Treats Hayata's teammates as individuals without agency.

Even 5ch users expected Hashimoto to play 2nd singles and one even predicted that Harimoto might lose to WYD.

(So the team event starts from the quarterfinals, huh?
Against China, it’ll likely be Harimoto, Hashimoto, and Hayata
But those 3 need to get some match play in beforehand to get a feel for things,
so Odo and Nagasaki might not get to play in the team event at all
Or, if they do, maybe just 1 match)

That’s one way to look at it
But I suspect Nakazawa will likely field Hayata

2 points [matches] for Harimoto and Hashimoto, with Hayata in the 3rd spot

For China, 2 points for Idi and Kuai Man, with Chen I in the 3rd spot
That’s the most logical)

I’d say it’s a 50/50 chance
Harimoto and Idi have been trading wins and losses, so she might lose this time
It’s also hard to tell who would win against Kuai Man
If Harimoto and Hashimoto split their matches (2 wins, 2 losses), it might all come down to Hayata and Chen I)

Odo? Don’t go spouting off until she's managed to beat China at least once in a tournament where a title is on the line. Hayata, for one, has beaten Chen Meng and Wang Yidi at the World Championships and at the Asian Games, too. Odo is just running away from those challenges, isn’t she?)

(Why not just give Nagasaki 2 points?
After all, she’s the winner of the selection trial
Word is that she even begged to compete in the World Table Tennis Championships, only to be shot down by Nakazawa-san, who told her, "Your ranking is too low, so no"
She’s surely heading into this tournament with a burning, single-minded determination—having endured hardship to prepare for this very moment
This is the time for Nagasaki, someone that even Miwa admitted she "couldn't match in power, spin, or speed"—to truly awaken!)

You are too smart not to be trolling if this is supposed to be a response to my question.
