China and Japan are probably breathing a sigh of relief. The bronze medal winning Mukherjee pair are not going to the Olympics.

  • Women’s singles: Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula
  • Women’s team: Archana Kamath
  • Reserve player: Ayhika Mukherjee
Seems like the decision was made largely based on world ranking (Archana 33 places ahead of Ayhika) and other questionable reasons such as Archana's previous WR No.4 pairing with Batra.

Yeah but these are precisely the issues that inform team selection with individual fairness vs team cohesiveness. TT IMHO needs doubles events and medals and not this team thing. A while back, Archana wasn't selected for the Indian team because of the criteria that was in place then. Moreover, if you want the Mukherjee pair, who are you going to drop between Sreeja and Batra?

I would pick Tanaka over Matsushima as the reserve player for Paris 2024 but JTTA may be looking ahead at LA 2028...

WTT CT Taiyuan 2024
MS R16
CDS 3-2 Matsushima (-11, -9, 4, 10, 8)

WTT CT Rio de Janeiro 2024
MS R16
Tanaka 3-2 Robles (-3, -9, 7, 8, 5)

That half-hearted performance against CDS yesterday surely won't land Sora a P card

WTT CT Taiyuan 2024
WS
R16
Kihara 3-1 CY (3, 4, -4, 5)
Harimoto 1-3 Shi Xunyao (-10, -9, 5, -10)

QF
Shi Xunyao 2-3 Hirano (8, 6, -8, -11, -7)
G4 40, 72, 105, 1011, 1113
G5 41, 52, 711

With this win, Hirano pulls further ahead of the JNT players born in and after 2000, that is, Hirano has the highest win rate (52.63% as of 2024/5/25) against CNT players born in and after 2000.

Hirano will also get back into the top 10 once again since 11/2019.

As for ranking, you're practically asking me to predict the draw, which is nigh impossible to do now with the removal of separation by association. All I can tell you is that she is top-10 material, and that like many Tieba users have said, Hirano has a higher ceiling than Hayata and Ito. As of this writing, Hirano's achievements in singles are still the most impressive and with the highest level of gold content.

The difference of 120 pts between W and F has a lot of implications. LJH/SYB will displace Harimoto/Hayata from the #2 spot in WR and very likely #2 seed at Paris 2024, the latter of which to be determined on 7/16.

WTT CT Rio de Janeiro 2024
XD F
Harimoto/Hayata 0-3 LJH/SYB (-3, -6, -6)

林申2号种子保住了 (Lim/Shin's #2 seed secured)

Not sure who they were displacing as Korea were already #2 in the ITTF Olympic list already.

As I've noted, the one over at ITTF is only for Qualification by World Ranking on 5/7 for XD and 6/18 for MS/WS. The WR for seeding will be released on 7/16. More points will expire for LJH/SYB (350+280+140=770) between those dates. There are still a few tournaments to gain points, so it's not a done deal.

In the latest episode of Jonetsu Tairiku (Passionate Continent) on Hayata that aired on 2024/5/26, Hirano made a cameo appearance. Hayata reiterates YET again how the 2 of Hirano and Ito are the reason she has made it this far and says she won't know what to do if they retire as the 3 of them don't want to be alone, and that somehow she feels like she will make it to the end.

Miwa's brother also made an appearance where Hayata instructed him to go wider when turning the BH corner and try that in the matches, and Hayata was visibly annoyed when he couldn't do it and made the comment that she couldn't get it done if she doesn't get that position.

I think that makes it 4 Japanese women in the top 10 (Hayata, Miwa, Ito, Hirano). I don't know if that's ever happened before. And the Miyus are moving up the rankings as well. I think Kihara will be into the teens and Nagasaki into the 20s.

It's needless to say SYB is the oddball that doesn't belong to the top 10, but looking at the long list of events many KNT players have attended in 2023 and 2024, it does highlight the naivety of JTTA and DTTB, the former in particular with its selection system that has done more harm than good. Good in that the only current Olympic gold medalist but solo (can I just say selfish?) Ito will not play WS and in turn WT, but bad in that Hayata is no way close to being the top 2 seeds at Paris 2024 (let alone challenge) and Hirano wasting precious time on fending off Ito until Zennihon Takkyu 2024 that could've been used for raising her WR at WTT SCT Doha, CT Doha and SCT Goa 2024. If you ask me, the chemistry between Hayata and Harimoto in XD has also been stagnant for the past 2 or even 3 years. Things could've been better for the top players who really bring home the glory but the higher-ups were so naive to talk about fairness and let those who wouldn't ever make the cut have an input on how the selection system should be organized.

As the CNR criticized the CNT's selection system, it's just lazy governance.

At some point, Odo may join them as well.

New rankings are out that include points from both Taiyuan and Rio De Janeiro:

Hirano 13 -> 11
Kihara 22 -> 20
Nagasaki 37 -> 23
Sato 131 -> 106
Hashimoto 254 -> 135

Hirano just misses the top 10, but she will be at Champions Chongqing so will have a chance to break into the top 10 there.

Kihara just misses the teens. Unfortunately, Champions Chongqing has the 4 player per country limit, but she will be attending Contender Zagreb 6/3-6/9 to try to get into the teens.

Nagasaki is 2nd seed at Mendoza so should have a good chance of gaining points to make it into the teens in the next rankings update.

Someone’s retirement wish may not be fulfilled anytime soon 😆
🍎Hayata’s in-class essay in primary school (grade4).
“Even after I become a grandmother, I will not stop playing table tennis.”😋

看了早田最新的纪录片 (Just watched Hayata's latest documentary)
https://tieba.baidu.com/p/9032230883
(Compared to the other two players of the golden generation, Hayata is not a prodigy. After losing to Sun Yingsha in Incheon this year, she repeatedly watched the match video during training to look for better shot paths. She acquired new skills and applied them at the World Cup, carried out some shot paths, but in the end still lost to Wang Manyu. It seems that a new blade was used during the World Cup.)

静心观赛: 主要她的同龄人太早出成绩了。伊藤16年上奥运,平野17年拿世界杯。 (Mainly because her peers achieved results too early. Ito went to the Olympics in 2016, and Hirano won the World Cup in 2017. [TL's note: 2016])

10 yr old Miku Matsushima (younger sister of Sora Matsushima) might just be the next JNT women's superstar in a few years. She just won the U15 GS at Youth Contender Havrov beating 14 yo compatriot Rio Shintani in the finals, and also beat compatriot 13 yo Karin Hanazawa along the way. She's improving at an amazing rate.
