It can be quite a bit of sidetopspin. It's also not a downward movement - the sidewards movement disguises it. There are some complex secrets in disguising it.

TT is just not the same without spectacular loopkills (especially around the net which happens maybe once or twice in a night always) and the associated outrageous blocks, loop to loop battles, C shaped chiquita winners, etc... Even the cat and mouse short game with inverted is vastly more...

This is what a lot of inverted players lack - special unorthodox strokes to annoy the heck out of other ppl and make them feel disgusted. :) Much more useful than blind topspin countering/looping I see them practicing all the time with little to no benefit to their game.

It's not all about winning/losing but about uncool/unfun ways to win based on equipment hacks. For eg I do well against deceptive pips, but it doesn't mean I don't think their existence is a blight on the sport. It's like for eg if Starcraft became a game where the cheesers won most of the time...

It never loses its benefits, as long as the LP players level up to incorporate even nastier strokes. One of the combination penholders I talk about has wins over some national level players here in Australia lol....and he is old af! More ppl use inverted because it's what made the sport cool...
