Is it fair to compare CSL with International tournaments? I don't think so, other mental aspects involved. Regardless, like drunix80 said, Fzd may have more difficulties against lefties.

What I find interesting is that all people talk about is how LGY chokes but they will never discuss that he was down 4-6 to FZD and came back to win 8-6...

FZD has more difficulties against lefties throughout his career but that is neither here nor there as he beats them with preparation. The Shang Kun match was clearly an anomaly as he played in the doubles slot. But he has never lost to Boll or Mizutani for example.

As for fairness, of course international play is not the same as CSL play. But he is now the main player for his team. He shoulders those responsibilities that Ma Long used to. And he is doing a great job.

And not just that.. Have you seen the rally at 5:6?
Insane!

Overall watching the match, I have to say, LGY has much better forehand than Fan.
Also he is better in rallies.
For BH to BH exchanges they are quite equal.
I think this supports my feeling, that FZD will never be a number 1 player in the world..

LGY doesn't have overwhelming power and benefits from facing CNT power regularly. FZD has overwhelming power and will do very well against most players who don't see it on a regular basis.

30.Dec 2017:

Ma Long vs Zhang Yudong

ML chop block at 3:34 was beautiful. Someday I will learn how to do this, it is probably my favorite type of shot on TT.

One guy at youtube noticed that this point was basically the same from the video below (see 3:17) on a match of China Super League 2016. Same opponent, same shot, same failure from Zhang and the same walk away like a boss from ML haha.

funny, I think FZD is a lot stronger than LGY and is going to be the #1 very soon.

Most likely you are right.
But - Two years ago.. people said the same. FZD, future world number one..
Year ago - people said Soon FZD will be world number one..

Well - so far it didnt happen.

I said - he may never be world number one :)

One of us is right.
And I am not going to fight, this post I am writing with smile on my lips :)

You seem to forget that Fan Zhendong is just 20 years old. At what age Ma Long first became the #1?

The earliest time for FZD to become WR#1 is April 2018 if he will attend and get good results in Qatar Open and German Open this March. By then, he will be 21 years 3 months old, the same age at which ML first became WR#1.
Actually it is KLH who keeps the youngest record of becoming WR#1 for the first time, 20 years and 3 months. The average age of first time being WR #1 of all 17 male players who has ever reached WR#1 is 24.

This is great extract, I was looking for similar data few weeks back! What is your source? Are you saying that ITTF world ranking started on October 1st 1991? I'm pretty sure there used to be at least annual table tennis world rankings since WW2, maybe even before.

ITTF started to use computerized ranking system from Oct 1991. There should be earlier version of rankings, but not on a regular basis.
Here are WR#1 data in computer ranking era
