ITTF started to use computerized ranking system from Oct 1991. There should be earlier version of rankings, but not on a regular basis.
Here are WR#1 data in computer ranking era

Old article about the first ITTF computer ranking system developed by Canadian TTU (p5)

Marvelous TT magazine archive!:) So many memories on the late 80s/early 90s (mainly Bfly) fashion! Nice wikipage as well, unfortunately I'm not fluent outside latin letters and I cannot see any English equivalent of this table (or am I too tired?). Would be great to find the way to legacy rankings before IITF computerized archive... Just saying. Back to fastest TT league in the universe!

The earliest time for FZD to become WR#1 is April 2018 if he will attend and get good results in Qatar Open and German Open this March. By then, he will be 21 years 3 months old, the same age at which ML first became WR#1.
Actually it is LGL who keeps the youngest record of becoming WR#1 for the first time, 20 years and 3 months. The average age of first time being WR #1 of all 17 male players who has ever reached WR#1 is 24.

With some calculations, I think FZD will get WR#1 in March if he can go beyond the first round of Hungarian Open this Jan. Sounds like the situation that Dima just needed to win the first round in 2017 Grand Finals to become the new WR#1. lol

Edit: I forgot Team World Cup in Feb 2018. Whether we have a new WR#1 in Mar depends on how many singles matches Dima will play in Team World Cup (300 points per win) and FZD's Hungarian Open result.

More important to being No1 is duration. so ML in this sense has been 1st in the ranking list for 64 months which is like 5 yrs and 4 months... Which is more than respectable and makes him probably, if not the best, one of the greatest in this sport.

Ma Long's last 3 CTTSL match ended 3-2. He isn't in a good form lately, probably he doesn't train too much as he is recovering from injury.

To become a father is a major change in Life with a whole lot of things that need to be reprioritized. So i wouldn't underestimate that. It's not unusual that player's loose rating points at first. I seen it happen to Timo, to .
Dima, heck even Roger Federer.

I guess all he needs is a bit of time. I believe in a while he'll be dominating as usual.

When you watch the match, he dominated LGY quite a lot in first 3 games.
He even had 3 matchpoints, just didnt convert them.
Then he got frustrated by some lucky shots of Lin.
And - well, he lost..
Probably he has some thoughts apart from table tennis.
We all know it - we play like sh*t when something is wrong at home..
And now that he is a father, everything can happen..

So true (when I came out from a depressed period my play increased with like 2 and a half level), but I hope you are not right on this one: I believe having a child normally should be a positive thing and bring happiness to the family. But it's exhausting as well. So I hope he is just tired and haven't had enough training and there is no problem at home.

I guess this might have been asked before but I can't find an answer. A while ago I saw a match ML vs Ma Te. but the last videos I saw on youtube gave me the impression that they now play for the same team ?, both confronted LGY and were wearing very similar T-shirts ?? whats up with that ?

That was a championship match for the China games not a super league match. They are on the same Super League team.

This is great extract, I was looking for similar data few weeks back! What is your source? Are you saying that ITTF world ranking started on October 1st 1991? I'm pretty sure there used to be at least annual table tennis world rankings since WW2, maybe even before.

Someone ought to check on Stellan Bengston's age when he became WR1...
