I just thought I'd ask of general opinion about what I think was ever so bizarre in terms of public attendance of chinese people to the China Open 2013..
Over the years I've seen all sorts of things being tried out all around the world to promote the sport as much as possible trough all the media channels witch I always thought was great cos it is fab to reach out to kids to get them into the sport but on this note tough I must say that I'm not fully sure if having the China Open - the home land of the sport itself - with such low levels of audiance won't be a bad influence to it all.. I was just so surprised and shocked with but still hoping that it was a random thing rather than a bad sign of things to come.

What do you guys think?

Interesting point! Well the chinese fans of TT are decreasing, soccer and basketball gain more and more ground in China. Another factor may be that (just speculating) in the city of Changchun the people are not so interested in TT. In the harmony china open held mostly at Suzhou the seats are almost full.

The only negative characteristic of TT as a sport is that at a certain level you must be a player with some level of technique to understand what is happening on the table (spins variations serves tactics etc)

People who are unfamiliar with ?TT are also bored because there is a timegap between the points. A man/woman in front of the screen wants to see some nice action not two players that play super fast and then slowly walk to get the ball from the barriers

The chinese superleague has somehow solved this "problem", and after a point when the ball goes to the barriers or far away, the umpires instantly feed the players with a new ball so that there isnt any delay. ITTF should endorse this tactic also if you ask me

Was strange indeed. With SuperLeague matches, the halls are always packed. It might just be what TTFrenzy said, that in the area of Changchun not many people are interested in the sport.

I agree, I was expecting to see thousands of spectators. Millions play TT in China you would think people would watch. But yes perhaps the various reasons such as booking tickets in advanced etc could of had an effect.

The interesting thing also to notice is that today's Shakehand vs Penhold match had tons of spectators. So perhaps it was the different region that caused this?

Price of tickets and maybe the time of the events (ya know, some people gotta work for a living...) might have some effect on the attendance.

For Korea Open, admission was FREE. Can't beat that! I went there 2010 and 2011 and it was a blast!
