XX took off his bandage on the last 2 games, it was probably affecting his mobility. He "sacrified" himself to have a better chance to win, too bad it didn't happen, was very close :(.
But it was a great match, probably the best doubles match that I have seen!

A brief translation of the press conference:

In the recap, all of them mentioned XX's injury.

ML: XX has tried all means to deal with his injury and stay in good form. I'm very moved by his performance.
XX: ML and I have tried our best to preapre for the match and motivate ourselves during the match. If my injury was less intense, the outcome might be different.
ZY & FZD: We performed well. We are happy about defending our title. XX's injury to some extent affected his performance.

Q and A
Q: XX, what helped you to forget about the pain of the injury?
XX: When I pair with ML, our goal is always winning the gold medal. Last time he was injured, but we still won national MD champion (2015 All-China Championships). This time I'm injured. ML kept thinking about solutions and tried to win more points in order to reduce my burden. We both see each other as the best partner and we highly trust each other. I really wanted to win, and this helped me forget about the pain.

Q: ML, is the game the same level as big international tournament such as WTTC?
ML: This match is at the same level as WTTC in terms of both sides' engagement and motivation to win. But I focused on my tactics and did not think much about whether this is domestic or international competition. ZY and FZD are the defending champion, they come from the same team (PLA) and they train together. XX and I started playing as a pair in MD since we were young and in recent years we also paired occasionally. This match is a great one. We lost by two points, but perhaps this is the charm of sports.

Wang Liqin said in an post-match interview that the reason why XX took off his bandage is that XX really wanted to try all he could, to get away from any constraints that potentially limit him. A media from Shanghai reported that XX was injected "anesthetic" before the match to help him cope with pain, after his injuries got worse in MS match with Hao Shuai.

In videos and pictures taken by audiences, XX buried his head down after their loss and ML pat XX on his leg and shoulder. XX could barely stand by himself when waiting for the ceremony. He was squatting in a corner and ML had to reach out to him to help him stand up. ML gave XX a big smile and a big hug on the podium. ML did not even smile that much when he was standing on the podium in Rio de Janeiro or Dusseldorf. After the ceremony ML held XX's arm to help him step down slowly from the podium. Their sportsmanship and brotherhood are really touching.

XX has won gold in team events for Shanghai, and he has given all he could to fight his best in MD. He has proved himself in this tournament. Soon he will play against FZD, in spite of his accumulating pain, injuries, fatigue, and everything.

As for ML, he has not won any gold in this tournament. Tomorrow will be his last chance. Qin Zhijian said earlier that he noticed ML's wrist injury affected his performance in team events. We don't know if things are turning better now. ML will face teammate Wang Chuqin (also from Beijing) in SF. ML had a difficult win against WCQ in super league team events SF last year.

Wish good luck to all players!
