@JeffM
ok i watched your video, you got a lot of good comments already but here are mine:
first i believe both of you are about the same level, so you lost on this one, but i think it should be 50/50 between you and him.
i made already the same comment regarding a previous video, but your main problem is your footwork. You are too lazy. Even in your neutral stance, i believe you are not bending your knees enough. Your drive is powerful, when the ball comes directly on you, you hit a good shot, but especially when it goes to your PBH side or you need to pivot you are slow. you really need some footwork drills.
NL said it but your serve and receive game is also one of the things you need to work on. You need a good low short serve. Your backspin long serve was good but the fast flat one was a bit high and not fast enough. your BH serves had good lateral spin but were too high and easy to attack i think this one can be fixed easily, just wait for the ball to be a bit lower to serve.
You had a lot of problems receiving fast long serves to your BH. You have to improve your block normally he leaves the diagonal open but you had problems. When he is serving long with backspin to your BH, given your playing style, you MUST pivot. but you didn't try enough and when you did you were late. This is an obvious weakness and your opponent just did that because he kept getting points out of this tactic.
Against the short serve to your FH from a leftie, here is a tip: try to get to the ball early and hit it softly on the left side with sidespin aiming to make the ball go on the right short side of the table ! that is a good tactic. of course good players expect you to do that and its easy not to put enough sidespin so the ball would be rather easy for them, but its a good trick to have.
As mentioned by OSP, you lost nearly all pushing rallies. First if you want to improve as a player, you should NOT get involved in these rallies, and after 1 push max, you should be attacking. That being said, you should be confident enough in your push to win these pushing rallies if the opponent never attacks first. His pushing technique was far better than yours. His push has more backspin and is longer than yours. You have to work on it; and work on attacking backspin. Try first with pivot/FH.
Lastly, when you attack with your FH, you always try to go with 90-100% power. thats not good, because even if its on the table, you expose yourself to a fast block. and because in many situations it decreases your consistency. Attack with more spin but 70-80% power and work on the placement. I'm not saying do it on EVERY ball, but if you mix it, its much more difficult for your opponent as he has to adjust for the amount of speed and spin.
BTW your opponent was also going with 90-100% power all the time. I think he was playing a more simple game than yours, but did it with more consistency. His pushing technique was better than yours. His tactics were perfect against you. I wouldn't say that he is necessarily a better player. I think for example your drive has more spin and power, he plays overall with less spin than you.
I hope its helpful for you
