Good idea - I can usually tell whether my opponent never played against pips before (and I don't block close to the table much, which is yet another potent weapon). By the way, Dornenglanz is awesome for this - FL2 and 3 might be too grippy, I suspect. Never tried 755 and did you mean Air UpUpUp form Cole - never heard of Illumina pips (there is a smooth rubber though).

Yeah - I kinda fixed that (Upup is close enough). Might tell Mr Lehman who gets the Spinlord short pips to get me a sheet of Dormenglanz. The guy who gave me the tutorial is a chop blocker and we used to play a lot until I got over 1800. So because of how he used to block lots of spinny loops close to the table, he always made me wonder about long pips.

I was thinking that a good sponge might help with blocking but 755 is not the kind of pips this guy would recommend (he is more a Grass D Tecs/Talon 0X, long soft pips kinda guy). In any case if I can get good enough to bring back loops close to the table, that is all I need as it will give people the practice they need.

Yup, both Dtecs and Talon are quite popular for this style. It's actually quite fun, chop-blocking that is. If timed well (I think you must have quick downward motion for that) against the loop - ball comes back low and loaded with backspin. Passive block will get you more of a dead ball, I think. I should try and practice it again next time - having close to the table 'B' game is handy.

Its mostly about focus and motivation because i feel reasonably fit even if my form is not peaking. There are ups and downs, and maybe I'm playing too much lately and getting tired a bit ???

Sir,

Although it sounds like you are playing TOO much to me, you had just come back from a 3 weeks holiday and didn't play much then.

Perhaps, like me most of the time, you are TOO self-conscious of what you have to work on? Let loose, flow with the go, don't think, play to play, don't play to imrove, don't play to win, play for fun, enjoy it and flow.

Not sure if this helps, but good luck Sir!

After playing a close match with an LP blocker, I asked him to give me an LP tutorial. So we went through all the pips I had (four, but only one in OX) and he said that since he understands OX the best and it gives the best reversal, I should work with that. So I used the 755 OX I had for the lesson. FL 2 and 3 and Air Upup will wait a while.

but since I coach people who play the dark side and I am trying to help people adapt to various spins,

PROPS AND RESPECT!

The Teacher is the eternal Student! Hallmark of excellent coach!

I just got the title of spinniest serves in the club today from a guy who used to be 2100 but had a debilitating accident. Since that is the most important part of my game, I am proud.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Played my usual lesson with my Coach last Saturday. We were both kind of out of it. We were effected with the seasonal allergies. I had to take a extra dosage of singulair to calm down my asthma. My coach was worse off, she looked like drug addict trying to kick the habit...lol. Didnt practice too hard this week, just enough for exercise and my back back was giving me some signals to take it slow this week.

Came upon a league video of Samsonov playing league in Russia i think. I loved the quality of the video. The recording angle and it was recorded in 1080 50fps. You could clearly see how Samsonov was playing with different angles when he was doing the 2 minute match warm up. How he was blocking on his forehand and switching from a regular block to a semi loop block. Also i can relate to him since he is tall and drives loop over the end of the table if you are not careful and when not enough spin/wrist is used into the forehand loop. The Russian player was also very good, played within his game and did give Samsonov a bit of trouble in one or two of the games. I also noticed Samsonov doesn't serve pure underspin serves, he uses alot of side down or side spin serves.

I also like to watch Nextlevel youtube videos. He was playing with the Big Dipper rubber which he used before. Maybe the EJ bug is spreading again.

I'd say yes. Particularly on the 2nd one. Ball jumps quite a bit on the bounce.

Thank you suds!

In that case i'm screwed (pun intended! LOL at me) ... i was consciously serving sidetop. Don't know if i can consciously serve a corkscrew (yet).

The first i was consciously trying to get whip mechanics into serve and use shorter swing ... as we can see i didn't understand whip mechanics.

The second i was kind of consciously getting whip mechanics in, but still my understanding of WM was off... also working on shorter swing.

I used to have a long motion FH pendulum serve ... much room for error.

IMO, the best for chop blocking, and among the best for passive blocking. i will say this, Dornenglanz might frustrate your students too much initially.

Sometimes, I watch some of my old videos and I like to think the equipment made me play better (Hexer and MX-s, where are you?). Then I use the equipment and realize that even videos deceive me and mess with my memory lololol...

Sure - perhaps they also could test some rubbers as well, while they are at it. Blind tests are awesome - you never know what you are going to find out.

I guess the only problem is to find people that can loop blindfolded. Maybe Ma Long can do that...

I'm sure there is a way to construct a blind test (with some effort) - same handle without labels, edge tape, rubber markings removed or cut off, sponge painted over with black marker etc.. You are handed nondescript paddle and off you go.

It would be even more hilarious to ask spectators to judge amount of spin generated on serves, loops etc.

another day at the club. a bit more of the same. lost all my 3 matches , 0-3 and 1-3 to my usual buddy, and 2-3 to a good junior player. But both are better, and i didn't play that bad. Apart from the 1st set where i wasn't ready and the last one where i was dead, I gave a good fight, when i lost it was 8, 9 or deuce. I was clearly a bit out of shape physically, after skipping a run + a 1:1 session last week (holidays), i need to have a run tomorrow or saturday before the big tournament and it will get better.

Today my receive game was not bad, and i managed to recover good after receiving short, that had been a long problem for me, and finally i can feel improvement there. i also tried to stand 10cm a bit farther from the table than usual and that worked better for me, i managed to have some extra time to put some good FH attacks or counterattacks. it didn't harm my blocking game. A bit of a lack of focus and fatigue at crucial times cost me dear. But today i was motivated and tchooooing a lot unlike Saturday. Thats good.
