I spent 2 months in Europe this summer where i didn't play a lot (perhaps 10 times, a few summer tournaments in France, once in my old club in Paris, 3 coaching sessions in PingPangParis, including an excellent one with former national vice-champion Marie Migot whose main advice was "stay relaxed", and one lesson in Rome).
I came back in Japan just one week before the main highlight event of the year, the Asian Veteran Champs.
I did practice a lot the whole week before the tournament, but i was lacking the confidence one can have if you train and play tournaments continuously. There was no miracle at the Veteran champs. Although in the team qualification group phase, i did contribute with a very important victory against the Russian team which won silver last edition, as their 2 main members were medalists and very good players, but my opponent was probably a last minute replacement and their "hole". Our ace Indian player played fantastic and won 3-2 both medalists.
The 2nd team in qualification phase, was already disqualified as they had one player missing. I did play a no pressure match here, against a very good player, and played a fantastic G1. I had even game point but blew it. In G2 and G3 i was totally outplayed. I played also one of his colleague which was a bit less strong perhaps but more balanced and very consistent. I lost 0-3 very easily but i kinda gave up early. We were already qualified for the main draw whatever the result.
Unfortunately our Indian player was injured badly at his ankle at the end of his 2nd singles against the Russian guy and the next day in the main draw, he wasn't even 50%. I did play 1 singles against a Singaporean guy. I did win G1 easily but got very nervous afterwards and lost 1-3. Had i won maybe our Indian guy would have fought his pain and grab a win but i think in QF we would have lost if he was only 50%.
in the singles, i played very bad, twice 0-3 losses. Both opponents were 2 penhodlers (one from China, one from HK) with vicious serve variation and very good at blocking with acute placement, especially in wide FH. I don't like this style, its a bad matchup for me. In a good day maybe i would have had some chances, but i played under my average level I think here. It was the 3rd day in a row of competition, Yokohama is quite far from Tokyo, I think i got tired physically and mentally and didn't manage to sleep well day after day.

This WE, i played the qualification even for Tokyo Open in 50+ category. Lost 0-3. had a very bad start in G1 0-6. came back 6-6 and lost 6-11... i had really bad luck in this game. G2 i had a lot of luck, managed to be 10-8 ahead. but lost at deuce. G3 was a disaster.
But what was really bad, is that i made more than 3 serve errors per GAME, even in G2. The opponent was quite good, a Dan 1 player (he did qualify for the main event). Its impossible to win against this class of opponent like this ! I really improved a lot in many parts of the games, even receiving. Im doing much better for example against half long balls. But still struggling against reverse spin in my short FH. (my reaction and footwork is slow, new techniques for me also. I'm working on it a lot but it will take some time). Else its more about being able to read the serves.
But more than receiving, the main problem right now is my own serve. There is a lack of stability. Quality and control (of height and length) is a bit too random still. it oscillates between very good serves, and serve errors, and everything in between. That affects my 3rd ball and confidence.
In rallies, i think im now quite confident especially BH. in BH drills i really look very good even against much better players. i manage to keep the racket high with closed angles and execute with fast short strokes with quality control and regularity, and also enables to switch gears or stroke (block or counter) easily.
its a pity that i performed so bad at both tournaments because i've been playing rather well in practice recently and i was hoping for better results
Kudos to my fellow French team mate E. who did qualify for the main event in 50+
