since bty is japanese it makes sense being top seller in their home country, because customers won't pay international shipping and taxes.

I don't think it's market share has increased in the rest of the world among the amateur players, the price increase is too high for hobby players, only for people with too much disposable income
Japanese people are extremely brand loyal.
there is a reason why 90%+ of the brands on the list are Japanese.
I doubt shipping and tax has anything to do with it.

sadly, data is very difficult to confirm
even Japanese table tennis company stated the the PPK data lacks full submission
so I have always taken it as surface value.

Each countries dynamics are different and if you were to tier them out to types of player (pro, semi pro, amateur, hobby etc), then it is even more difficult to place stats, since there are no body collecting these stats in such great depth.

One also do forget that the lower end does posses huge volumes, so do one measure in unit sold, or revenue?
Butterfly is at the top, but how strong, versus some volume hobby rubbers for example in terms of unit sold, I have yet to meet a TT businessman that could convince me of solid stats, as many of these companies are making bulk cheap rubbers and are selling volumes too.

my background: I am a TT equipment seller for 12 years and know people in Japanese brands like Butterfly, Nittaku, Yasaka, able to engage Victas/TSP with ease and have some what of relationship with most of the top ESN brands

Just last week, local retailers FINALLY got the green light to lower the price for the entire Butterfly product lineup. Dignics now costs roughly 56% more than a comparable ESN rubber, as opposed to over 100% several years ago.

Also, the yen just hit a 34-year low today.

More numbers are in. Butterfly Thailand had a fantastic 2023, with an increase of 6% in sales and 20% in profit compared to 2022. Comparing 2023 and 2019, the increase is 43% in sales and 98% in profit.

Newsflash: most heavily marketed brand tops marketing statistics. World leaders are SHOCKED.

Yet I'd prefer FastArc G-1 (the #2 bestseller) over Rozena (the #1) every single day. Even though Rozena's just fine.
It actually took Butterfly roughly 10 years to recover the market share that was lost after the out-of-region retail policy kicked in.

Make that 4 consecutive quarters. YET another record high for Q4 (1-3/2024) of FY2024. More investment in production capacity planned.

How will ESN respond?

Market share continues to go up for Butterfly and YET another record high has been set in Q3 (10-12/2023) of FY2024. 3 consecutive quarters already. It's not just the Glayzer series, but also Dignics, Tenergy and Rozena sell.

For 8, 9, 10, 12/2023, Butterfly dominates 6 of the top 10 in sales ranking.

Due to strong demand for the mid-range Glayzer series, sales continues to gain momentum and has set a record high in Q1 (4-6/2023) of FY2024.

Market share continues to go up for Butterfly and another record high has been set in Q2 (7-9/2023) of FY2024. Q1-Q2 2024 (4-9/2023) saw nearly a 10% increase over Q1-Q2 2023.

Hopefully competitively.
Here in the Philippines, so many people are still using Baracuda, Acuda S2, Tenergy 05, Fastarc G-1, Hurricane 3.

They need a new best seller imo.
Because Barracuda and Acuda offer the same as ESN's newest offerings.

Anyway, Butterfly is the Apple of TT world. Everyone will use their product at the end of the day much like everyone will use iPhone because it's just that good.

And also everyone here wants to use a soft backhand. I use Mizuno Q-Quality or Omega 7 Pro and they still think it's hard.

The yen has just hit a 38-year low today (1 USD ~ 160 JPY). Now, Tenergy costs less than its 2015 list price in Japan (still 1000 yen higher than its original 2008 list price). Just when I came back from Japan...

Including taxes 10780 Yen for Dignics (~62€/$66) and 9790 Yen for Tenergy (~56€/$60). Prices are from the Butterfly JP shop. Dignics goes for 80€ and Tenergy for 60€ in Germany.
Thank you for the info. Butterfly USA price is currently $80 Dignics and $68 Tenergy. Somehow I thought the difference would be more significant and that Butterfly Japan prices would be more reasonable.

Most shops in Japan actually sell at a discount of 10% off. If you look hard enough, some sell at 20% off. With the consumption tax at 10% (increased from 8% in 2019), it's essentially tax-free.

For most shops, the price of Dignics is JP¥9240-9405 w/ tax (~US$57-58 as of 2024/7/9). The price of Tenergy is JP¥7810-7920-8046 w/tax (~US$49-50). So for those in Japan, they can get Dignics at the price of Tenergy in other places.
