I like this forum better because i Do not like the look of mytt. I also feel that the users there seem to be a little more arrogant ans think they know it all. Maybe they have played a short period of time or at a low level. I feel that if you have played for a while or know somewhat much about the sport you are humble enough because you undeestand that there are much much more to learn. Newcomers to the sport often seem pretty sure of them self i think and have not really understand yet that there are several ways to play tabletennis. What i mean is that i think the attitude and spirit is much friendlier here and i appreciate that.

It is not an accident. I give a lot of credit to Carl and DerEchte for helping to cultivate that.

Would the hosting costs be similar to VBulletin (or whatever this forum runs on?)
I do not know exactly what TTD hosting plan needs, <strike>but apparently this forum uses simple shared server which should cost about $10 monthly</strike>. (edit: TTD is hosted on a dedicated server). I'm almost 100% sure that Vultr $10 plan will suffice. I already worked on a site that had 90.000 unique users/day and we used Vultr $ 20.

Haha Lula, that is why I wrote that post about higher level players and coaches being discouraged to post on TT forums.

Some forums have more of that crowd, and yes, for whatever reason, more of them historically hang out at MyTT.

It isn't because of the leadership, they are all fine folk who do not encourage that behavior, but it is there more frequent.
MYTT also gave David Marcus, the ratings central creator, a lot of grief. I haven't seen David Marcus on a forum for a while now.

I bet the pros think the TT forums are nuts. There are too many opinions without facts to back them up. People are too worried about the equipment. People are easily swayed by marketing hype. What really makes a difference is athletic ability and practice, practice practice till perfect then practice perfection.

Meanwhile, I see nothing really wrong with TTD except for copying and pasting the background.

About costs, I forgot one of the key information: vBulletin renewal (every 6 months or 1 year, I do not know for sure) costs $209. As Discourse is free, costs for platform migration will be quickly recovered. Obviously there are other issues to be taken into consideration by the admin. If everything is great and working perfectly, it is difficult to "waste time" with this type of investment.

Thanks.

I wonder how much use people make of the other TTD features (the different sections outside of the forum).

Obviously Discourse couldn't cater for all of that.

I think TTD is decent enough, not fantastic, but decent. Most of the community is great though :) I really wish there was a light theme, in addition to the dark one – something requested from time to time, but no progress there.

When it comes to software and hosting expenses, I believe those are just a minor part of the whole package. From what I see the hosting works. It seems to be through SingleHop LLC in the US. I can't remember any major downtime and the response time even for me in Europe is good enough. Yeah, sure it may be possible to save $10 or $20 a month and move it to some low end hosting on an overbooked server. There are plenty of those, but not necessarily a great solution.

I think the greatest expense is probably time, and also being interested in taking backups, testing, doing the migration and of course the maintenance afterwards. Actually, it is the long term maintenance I would be worried about. Money can be raised for upgrades, maybe even for monthly expenses, but someone has to do it and hopefully be interested in running it.

Not sure how it works here, how Dan (and possibly any other admins) solve it.

OK, another question for the forum regulars.

How do you have it set up to view threads?

If I have "newest first", I have to scroll down to wherever the conversation left off from (or the last post I read).

If I go for "oldest first", it keeps putting me back at the first post/page and I have to find my way to the end.

Neither seems a great way of doing it, and there doesn't seem to be an option to "pick up where you left off".......
