I play TT about once or twice a week. Sometimes none because I have two very young children.

Sometimes if I don't play for a week I feel that urge to just hit the ball anywhere at home. Sometimes I watched YouTube videos to ease this dissatisfaction.

Do you guys have this urge when you don't play for a while? How do you deal with it?

I am addicted too... There is two solution: find something else or someone (gf my case) you're enthusiastic about. Obviously you already have a family, so try to read or whatever.
The other is to practice at home: footwork and physical training for the sake of becoming better in TT!

Having exams at the university you don't have too much time to think about TT, but when you do, you realise you really need the complexity of this sport, it's exhausting both physically and mentally in a good way.

SFF_lib - you are not alone! I reckon most of us on this forum have a table tennis addiction!

It's a good addiction to have and the only thing you can do is find more ways to play table tennis (although not that easy when you have two young kids!).

I do a lot of table tennis coaching. If I have coached for a few days in a row, I am glad to have a day off. But if I have more than one day without playing, I start to get a bit restless. It's ridiculous really, when you think what a silly game table tennis is (small table, small ball, small bats - grown men and women grunting and cursing at each other).

Your post reminds me of something I wrote on my website a couple of years ago about "table tennis fever". it's just a light hearted article about being obsessed with table tennis. But a fun read for a couple of minutes...

The only way to deal with it is "find someone to play" :)

I can remember the time when i started my job as an accountant . With the schedul of my working my three time training reduced to one time a week. I once wanted to give up my job and just play tt more while tt didnt have any money for me . I was in a detour . I decided to have my job and just play tt for one day a week . But i increased the time of my training in that one day . You can play table tennis with out table if u feel the need of tt so much . Or play with wall :p

Sure I get the urge to play if it's been a break for me but I try to keep it in prospective and know it's good for me every now & then to take breaks.

I sometimes get too caught up in "practice, practice, practice. Got to improve. Got to beat this person or that. etc" When the trick is that once you reach that level? It's just doing the same thing but for the next group of guys or level. You're like a hamster on a wheel. So I burn out sometimes if it becomes too much work and not enough fun.

So breaks are good for me.

I started to know table tennis 2 and half years ago but just getting serious on it last year. Some people might call me addicted to it. But it's really exciting to me. For me, it's not addiction but more like passion. Compared to addicted problem, I guess I have more issues on finding a sparing partner in my campus. :D

Yeah I do training as well particularly footwork. I sometimes do targeted training by myself such as wrist strength for banana flick. But things could turn out badly and I have to miss the TT evening. I would feel very gutted.

That's spot on Tom. I like your article. I can tick off most of the symptoms + EJing and spending too much time on tt forums.

I am jealous of people that can play a few times a week consistently. I used to play everyday as a kids in China where clubs open 12hrs a day, 7 days a week.

I missed those times. My local club will be closed for a month. I need ways to handle my addiction over the holidays. I guess with festivities and families around I would feel better :)

Yeah I have a friend with a table in his garage. But as a looper there's not enough room. But can use it as a training opportunity for close to table hit or service return.

Interesting perspective. Never thought of it.

I have been very consistent with targeted training and tt this year. Some days I met guys who used to beat me but haven't played for a while. With more consistency I beat them easily. I also improve past some regular guys that usual beat me. Then I realized that just playing and training regularly can keep your techniques. But to improve past some good players you need to put in a lot of time in training and play.

Yeah like you said, I enjoyed making friends and learning from the good players. I also enjoy coaching new players as coaching cost is very high.

Fever is good, keep it as motivation. In my case, the less I play, the better the results.
