With the London 2012 Olympics now behind us the Rio 2016 Olympics is now the next largest competition that the Chinese team is preparing for, however there have been some changes to the selection process this time round.

Previously the Chinese coaches would select players to participate in the Olympics based on their past performances in the World competitions; however Liu Guoliang and the rest of the coaching staff are now focusing more on players who have recently been on top form. This is fantastic news for Ma Long as it puts him in an ideal position due to his recent success having gained the World Cup title, having helped Ningbo to gain the championship title and being currently ranked 2nd in the second round of the 2013 WTTC squad trials.

Ma Long had to experience some harsh treatment at the London 2012 Olympics with the Chinese coaches focusing mainly on his performance in past world competitions which hasn’t been his strong point he was made to settle as one of the team players. This decision was made despite the fact that Ma Long was doing very well in his competitions having nailed an unbelievably impressive 52 game winning streak, which being such a great accomplishment you would have expected to earn him a place in the Olympic Singles.

This year’s most important competition has to be the 2013 World Table Tennis Championships in Paris, with Ma Long currently placed at number 2 at the end of the second round of the 2013 WTTC squad trials he is in a superb position, if he is able to maintain such amazing results then he will no doubt be in Paris.

And Ma Long was not on team in Olympics because he was getting picked on. Ma Long did not qualify for the singles competition at the Olympics. It had nothing to do with him not being chosen. He did not qualify to play in the singles because Wang Hao and Zhang Jike qualified ahead of him.
