Is it possible that people started to find ways to play against anti?
Of course. No one is doubting that. But Sabine is older (33) and her level also varies because of the amount of forehand she has to play. Bernie did a lot of things extremely well, the moat obvious one being that ahe played her backhand down the line a lot to avoid the trap of exchanging backhand to forehand with a pivoter. And with Kaufmann and Han Ying, Winter might not make singles.

But all that said, Winter can play better than ahe did against Bernadette. So the next championship events will be key. Kaufmann already beats Winter and Winter beats Han Ying ans Han Ying beats Kaufmann. And clearly Kaufmann is likely a lock. But a lot can happen in 2 years. Thrre are still two more years of Euros etc.

I think Winter should change to long pips to mess her opponents up ( just kidding)

I thought Winter ate HY for breakfast?

3W13L since the switch in 2025. 2W5L in 2026.
JNT: Winter for LA28!

Ended in 3 for real this time. Added 2 wins for a total of 3 since the switch in 2025 (3W12L), with 3-1 and 3-2 over Hirano and Hashimoto. 2W4L in 2026.

Not much if any advantage over Kaufmann and HY for WS of LA28.

winter suffers from a back injury and still not recovered. so a pretty expected outcome against a defender knowing that she will not be able to play at her best level while both are so close in ranking

As Wolf11 mentioned over at TT-NEWS, 2 of her 4 defeats recently happened before her herniated disc. It's clear players have caught on and made things harder for Winter and how she will drop to WR20. Getting injured again should be regarded as a warning sign of players forcing her to take risks more than she can manage.

Winter (1) 2-4 Pavade (9) (-7, -5, 6, 7, -8, -10)
G5 51, 52, 62, 63, 73, 74, 84, 89 Winter served into the net again, 811
G6 26, 56 TO for Pavade, 76, 77, 87, 810, 1010, 1012
Pavade knew what to do when serving and receiving, by aiming for Winter's short FH and deep BH, severely limiting her FH usage.

Pavade played it very well. It´s difficult to understand why so many others couldn´t and thus enabled Sabine´s miraculous rise, but no-one can´t take that away from her.
Because Pavade is left-handed, after all! 😀

I thing the current drop in performance has multiple reasons. Of course people found some ways to play against Winter, but for me she just doesnt play to the level she hit at the end of last year and the beginning of this year.

She cant hurt people with the anti by itself so she is more depened on her forhand then other players. Her forhand is great, but is not as great and heavy as it was a couple of months before.

Some people said that Winter has some kind of minor inqury. Could be a reason as well. The honeymoon phase is over, but i cant see her dropping out of the top 20 which is a great archivment nevertheless.

Risiko Bandscheibe? Winters Traum vom ersten EM-Titel (A risk involving a spinal disc? Winter’s dream of a first European Championship title)
https://www.tz.de/sport/risiko-bandscheibe-winters-traum-vom-ersten-em-titel-zr-94532674.html

Ljubljana - Diese Serie tut weh.

(In table tennis, there has been a recent uptick in disc-related injuries occurring just before or during major tournaments. Ahead of the European Championships in Slovenia, Germany’s top contender has also been affected. Is this a coincidence, or is there a pattern?

Ljubljana – This string of incidents is painful. At the 2024 Olympic Games, German national team player Nina Mittelham was forced to withdraw in the second round due to a disc injury. At the 2025 World Championships, former world number one Dimitrij Ovtcharov pulled out just hours before his first singles match; the cause was a herniated disc, which shortly thereafter necessitated surgery on his cervical spine.

This Sunday, the 2026 European Championships begin in Slovenia, where Europe’s top-ranked player, Sabine Winter, hopes to secure her first-ever European singles title. However, the world number eight has also been grappling with the effects of a disc issue since July. This has somewhat slowed her spectacular ascent—from national team reserve to the continent’s number one player.

"It hasn't been the best few weeks for me," says Winter. "But I’m back in full training. At the European Championships, I’ll fight for every single point. If I come away with a medal, that’s a success in itself—though my dream goes a bit further than that."

Team doctor emphasizes prevention

This raises the question: do the explosive movements and body rotations involved in table tennis place an unusually high level of strain on the back and shoulders?

Thomas Garn, the German national team doctor, explains: "While we are seeing a cluster of these cases right now, they are outliers rather than the norm, and there is no clear, underlying cause inherent to the sport itself." It is not the case "that being a professional table tennis player inevitably leads to a herniated disc—just as being a professional soccer player does not inevitably result in a torn cruciate ligament."

The causes and durations of these cases vary. For Mittelham, the issue affected the lumbar spine, while for Ovtcharov, it involved the cervical spine (neck). Winter, meanwhile, has dealt with both: an injury to her lower back, and now, neck pain.

Team physician Garn notes: "We are keeping an eye on these issues; we have conducted an analysis and developed preventive programs for the players." These include specialized athletic training and physiotherapy.

For Winter, the timing—just before the European Championships—was particularly bitter. Although the 34-year-old has already been crowned European champion seven times, those titles were "only" in doubles or as part of the German team.

The only European in the top 10

Winter’s singles career truly took off when, at the age of 31, she changed her racket rubber and her style of play. Since 2024, she has used a smooth "anti-top" rubber on her backhand, which can drastically slow down rallies and frustrate her opponents.

Since then, she has become the only European ranked in the world’s top 10, having also secured multiple victories against top-tier players from China. Heading into the European Championships, Winter was considered a favorite—until a doctor diagnosed her with a herniated disc.

She has been back to training and competing since August, thanks to a series of injections and targeted stabilization exercises.
In Ljubljana, however, Winter faces a dual challenge: navigating two major, back-to-back tournaments—the European Championships and the China Smash. The frequent tournament trips to Asia are "an additional factor that puts a strain on the body," says Richard Prause, the German sporting director.

Timo Boll as a role model

For Winter, another race is also ongoing: will her opponents be quicker to figure out her new style of play, or will she manage to continue evolving a step ahead of them? "My opponents are playing a bit more cleverly against me now," she says. "But they haven't fully 'solved' me yet."

Winter has a prominent role model: German table tennis legend Timo Boll, who suffered a disc injury in 2018 and traveled to the European Championships with virtually no preparation—only to go on and win his seventh of eight European titles. dpa)

Bad news for Winter.

Duda/Mittelham and QD/Winter to vie for XD of LA28? Hard to imagine the 2 pairs will be within top 8 in WR to secure 2 spots. Franziska/Kaufmann just don't play enough.
