Hello dear forum members! Recently I kinda remade my bh and went to the tournament. Here is a video of me playing(I'm in the black shoes).
Some aspects I noticed:
1)I almost don't move to the ball and I almost always do BH opening to the FH(I win the point but it's kinda not on my own) . I don't get into position and often miss the ball.
2) WHAT TO DO AFTER MY SERVE? I think I should stop rushing and think where does my opponent receive my serves.
3) I'm able to do only the first BH loop but can't continue. How to fix it? Relax the arm more?
4) I can make much spin on the FH loop but I want more power. What should I do to make my FH more powerful? You see I have the movement from the body but my loop is just slow.
5) My weight is on heels mostly. How to fix it?
1. I'm not a backhand expert, but you have to work harder with your legs and your arm to get that backhand to work all the time. I think you have a nice touch and brushing the ball really good.

2. You have to build up a plan for what you want to receive from your opponent and perhaps a backhand, short, slightly under/side spin in your opponents forehand (right handed) will give you a good opportunity to loop the returning ball. For example... :)

3. Often the first backhand loop comes on a back spin ball. The return will be top spin and you have to close your bat angle a bit more and hit the ball at a higher place. That's how it is for me anyway.

4. H3 42deg Ma Long? The blade is quite good for a sponge this hard, but you have to work hard and swing hard with your full body, hip, arm and wrist. Right now you aren't really close to what is needed. I think you should use a Yinhe Big Dipper 38 or 39 deg to get the feeling and a sponge that suits the way you play. The way you are swinging now, the 42deg sponge isn't engaged at all. Actually you have a nice brushing technique, but you need a softer sponge to get the spin and speed out of your bat. At, for example, 2.58 and 3.30 in your video, You have a quite good brush. But your opponent blocks it into the net. That ball should fly past the table if you had softer sponge.

5. You have to be more foreseeing in your game play and not be standing still at any time, Use all your time to prepare for the next hit. If you work on this you'll be on your toes automatically.

6. Take it a bit easy. Don't rush it and make bad decisions like try to topspin a back spin ball when you're out of position. Don't be active at all time. Sometime it's just better to block the ball when you don't have the technique yet for backhand attack on a top spin ball.

Hope it helps somehow. :)

  • Men Singles and I lost to this uncle.
  • I was not able to return his serve effectively.
  • Style: Ol'skool JPen style with only one side rubber.
  • Winning strategy: Tricky serve and 3rd ball loop attack.
  • He was a provincial / state representative during his younger days. Now, he is in his seventies.

I don't know why but you don't play like someone who is connecting sequences of three to five shots. Not sure what is causing it, you keep playing one shot and get surprised when the ball comes back and it doesn't seem like you are set on a response. You do some good things to prepare for a shot, but you are very guilty of ball watching and not knowing what your point winning sequences naturally should be. It is like you haven't figured out how to play your shots with effective connecting transitions to a serviceable level. That might be the result of just not having drilled transition footwork but there are other things you do well that would lead me to believe you have trained things. Just not sure what is causing these gaps. Your elbow position isn't wild but you don't use the stability to look effectively prepared to continue the rally at all times.

The biggest drill I would give you is to just record yourself playing one forehand , one backhand to a blockers backhand or forehand. Start the drill with a serve from either you or thr blocker on some points in the drill but also just play forehand topspin one backhand topspin continuously to the blocker. Then go 3 points on the table, either 2 forehands vs one backhand all to the blocker or two backhands (if you really love your backhand like me and hate moving) and one forehand. But you should be efficient connecting the shots and adding topspin to the ball. As much as it is important to learn to hit the ball hard, it is important to learn to add topspin (or mildly reduce topspin) to the ball to control the quality of the ball that you get from your opponents block. Topspin also increases consistency against certain opponents and can also be used by certain opponents (who countertopspin and block extremely well).

Then from there, go to serve, get push, slow spinny loop on third ball, and then finish the point on 5th ball. Or just continue to rally with pressure.

It is also important to be comfortable defending shots so if you have a good looper, let him loop to your block and you can do it with serve and return and then after the opening topspin, you learn to keep the ball in play with a block and then continue blocking or countering until you find a chance to finish the point or start attacking.

I am not saying that one should play for the rally. I am saying that one should be able to comfortably rally if They are forced to by opponents who survive the opening sequence or opponents who make it hard to end the point favorably on the third shot or fourth shot with minimal risk.

But if you aren't able to use the quality of your topspin and block to continuously rally or sequences shots, if your third/fourth ball isn't winning the point over 70% of the time, then you need to take a realistic look at whether your game is structured properly (equipment, ability to control the ball etc.) Because there is no point using equipment so hard that you cannot continuously rally with it to your satisfaction. I don't think that is the problem here, but it can only be diagnosed by looking at how well you do when you are forced to play multiple shots in a row and in the match you struggle to connect shots beyond serve and attack.

Yeah. This thread is so that, if people post video footage, the only people who are allowed to respond are people who have a track recored of doing it in a way that is constructive.

Thanks for understanding.

Hello guys! My observation on what can be done better: almost everything lol.
But the most obvious problems - im too rushed to play sometimes ( bc I know opp is better so i need to take an initiative first), need to stay lower also, pivoting a lot from a backhand side and skillful opponent can exploit it.
What other things that are can be improved?

As mentioned and promised, my latest video. This is a actual game play with my current coach. It was a best of five but I manage to only win one set and I will only show the one set I won. Nope! I am not gonna embarrass myself by showing you that set where I lost 2-11, nope! Not gonna happen.

Felt like editing some video of me playing in Chongqing last summer. Last year was the least I have played table tennis since I began playing at 8 years of age. Hoping to change that course in 2025!

I would be interested to know if the commentators think I played wildly and got lucky or if the commentators think I should try and be brave and take risks, as this probably suits my style.

This is in my top 3 wins of all time. This guy is much higher ranked than me and beat everyone else and won the tournament on the day.

My feelings were on the day I was very positive in shot selection in first 2 sets especially, and in fifth set! But I felt like I held back a little in third and fourth, but maybe opponent made me miss and came back at me well too!

Need to be somewhat agressive with short pimple and i think it is good for further developement that you are trying to play aggressive.

Some tips:
- doing one one exercise would get you some stability
- with the short pimple: either take it very early and just hold or closer to highest point and play hard. Sometimes you forget to take it early and play with good placement to set up the point.
- work on your strenghts and practice how to get there. Backhand looks nice. I would try to against backsideplayers, serve forehand top sidespin short or long towards their backhand and they are force to attack then you can play with your short pimple. Same with return, good long push, preferable towards their backhand then you hit backhand on the opening loop.
- Serves. On this level and on almost every level you win a lot on good serves. I think they are a bit easy now, maybe because he has pimples.

Goood luck

It is impressive that you are still working hard!
I think your forehand stroke with mostly are are more suited toward short pimples. Hard to change if you have played long but getting som body in the stroke will benefit you long term. Try holding the arm still and think you are freezing then turn feet, knees, hips or stomach depending on what works best. Goood luck.

What works for me .... helpful for me

You would have more people .... Just a friendly tip.

@Tyce ; @Zezima : I am going to assume you do not understand how this thread works. Please read the post quoted below. This thread works differently than most. Anyone can post video. But if your name is not on the list from the post quoted below which is the first post in this thread, then YOU CANNOT COMMENT on footage posted. Only people on the listed of members authorized to give commentary on footage in this thread can do so.

So, you may have meant well. But below explains why your posts have been deleted.

This thread is for forum members to post footage of yourself. This is different than a regular thread. I will moderate this thread heavily. Anyone can post footage. But the only people who can comment on the footage are people who have been specifically selected because they are players who are able to give useful commentary.

These are the players who can give commentary on video footage:

1) Baal
2) Der_Echte
3) NDH
4) Richie
5) Lula
6) NextLevel
7) Brs
8) Takkyu_wa_inochi
9) Tinykin
10) pingpongpaddy
11) Tony's Table Tennis
12) Victor Moraga
13) cytivrat
14) ander999

Anyone can post footage. However, if anyone not on the list above tries to post commentary on footage, that commentary will be deleted. If someone presents commentary to me via PM for posting, and I deem it okay to post, I may make exceptions to this every so often. I also am reserving the right to edit the list and add if I decide someone is capable of making good, insightful commentary.

Hopefully, this will make it so people feel comfortable posting footage of themselves for people on the forum to see and get to know each other without feeling like the commentary that happens after posting footage is uncalled for. Also, if you wanted to post footage but would prefer nobody comments on the footage you present, you can ask that. I will help make that happen as well.

Again, comments from people who are not on the list above will get deleted.

My recordings

Basically, this is a warmup me and my brother would do.

30 forehand topspins, and 20 backhand drives. This is NOT training.

I would personally call upon everyone here, especially:

@UpSideDownCarl (I know how good he is at reviewing)
@Tony's Table Tennis (very good at reviewing too, and also a Cpen player)

Everyone on the list of members approved to comment on footage is excellent at analyzing someone's play.

But I will just say something simple about your contact and how you intercept the ball.

On FH your contact is decent and you pull past the ball and make tangential contact.

On BH you are pushing into the back of the ball and not pulling past it. RBP is very good for spinning the ball, but the way you are contacting will not generate real spin and is more how you would contact for TBP where you come from behind the ball with the racket at the angle you want and push forward into the ball. Technically, you are not taking a stroke but instead punching into the ball.

What is the problem with the stroke though?

I see, thank you.

How about form? For FH and BH?

I am going to let other people comment if they want. I gave you the information I think is relevant. BH is not a stroke it is a punch and you are not pulling past the ball but hitting into the back of the ball. In truth, that might be enough to fix. That is also not easy to fix.

Often when you give someone too many things to fix, none of the things get fixed because the person is thinking of too many things at once. Maybe fix one thing at a time.

If you fix that one thing, it will be big.

@PenHoldSandro
Forehand: It looks like you are trying to open up, almost like showing your groin for someone around one a clock. It also looks like you are turning the body. Both are good! I do think you are using way to much arm now in the beginning. Better to think that you are cold and have arm closer to body so you are more forced to move the turn the body primarly and not swining the arm as much. Also need to try to do like one forehand from forehand and one forehand from the middle and learn to create a triangle with the base between the feet and where you hit a triangle like one a clock and hit, then move the legs, make triangle and hit again. So move, stand still a bit and hit and move again and so on.

Backhand: I think it is much better in the beginning and just try to move the elbow, back and forth. Almost like windscreen wiper or throwing a frisbee. Your stroke now is more defensive and counter, will be harder if you are going to be able to create more power and spin yourself. And like forehand, need to find the position. Try to hit the ball in front of your bellybutton and a bit closer to the body. So move, stand still and hit in front of the body then move and so on.

Always need to be in position. Probably more important to learn to be in position and move than just learing the strokes at one place. So try to play slow. If you have more balls you can do multiball.

What is the black rubber? sounds very hard or thin sponge, almost like pimples.

Good luck
