I do not know the exact reason why Ma Long is so good, I just know he is good from his result.

That is until tonight. You see the current WTT China Smash, in some of the in-between points filler, they editor will show the RPM of the winning ball.

Today, I know quantitatively why ML is so good. In one moment, the editor showed Octcharov ball ( Octcharov vs Zhao Qihao match ) RPM as 3XX rpm, where as ML's winning as 7XX rpm in the ML vs Lee Sangsu match.

Can you imagine Octharov rpm is only 3XX vs ML's 7XX rpm. This is why ML is so good!

I think, you're picking too small of the RPM sample. Pretty sure that even Ovtcharov and Lind landed balls with 7-8k RPM.
But ye, I think ML had consistently the biggest numbers coming close to 9k RMP.

So it's fair to say ML is the best because his topspin RPM "is over 9000!" ;)

  • I recalled in one of TTD Dan's video where he had Dima as the guest.
  • Dan asked Dima who is the most difficult opponent he faced in the WTT Tours.
  • Dima answered it was Ma Long.
  • The reason Dima said it was Ma Long as follows:
  • Ma Long takes his time to look at his opponent's position and then FH loop with precision and placement for the win.

If Ma Long had just won one out of the three encounters in the World Championships against Wang Hao especially in 2011, his fate would’ve been entirely different.

Those three losses just keep haunting him and force him to be hungry to win no matter what even at this late stage.

Serve (and third ball) and receive. That's where matches are won and lost, and that's where Ma Long excels even other champions. I don't think he has the very best serve, but he does have the most consistently dominating serve and third ball combinations. And his amazing spin reading ability gives his receive game matchless stability under pressure.
