Pros with the quality of Lebrun don't just miss the ball though. It's almost always because the opponent varied something (often spin wise, which can be quite invisible to typical audience unless you were watching the wrist and racket movement like a hawk). Even if it's a pop up or a higher ball, you still have the spin variation to watch out for, and if you read it wrong you're still gonna make a mistake (probably even more considering that the typical pro instinct is to loopkill it)
Why are you two whispering about boys in a thread about girls?

It's the same, I watched Fang Bo's commentary on G5 of Miwa vs Sun Yingsha, Ma Lin basically asked Sun Yingsha to add spin to the BH, and after that the match turned decidedly as Miwa adjusted too slow.

Ito sounds like she has the flu, mentions that the weather has been cold and that she hasn't been able to get enough sleep. Good on her for beating Diaz in this condition. She also seems really stressed and deflated from stress of the Paris race.
Whatever the case, Ito has been using her body condition as an excuse for much of 2023 to deflect from the fact that her form has more to do with her mindset than anything (playing coach-less for 10 months and still getting nowhere = splitting hairs). She beat Hayata at Nojima Cup 2023 after saying she hadn't trained for 3 days due to her body condition. Yet in an interview with Yomiuri 11 days after Nojima Cup 2023, she claimed how she could move better then but due to her body condition she hadn't been able to train to the extent she wanted to get closer to CNT players. Yet again, she claimed she could move better before Zennoh Cup Tokyo but came up with various excuses after losing to Hayata at Zennoh Cup Tokyo, which didn't sit well with 5ch users.

More seriously, the draw has interesting matchups. Measuring how far Miwa has come in her lifelong quest to topple the CNT is one. Whether Hayata has any hope of beating a top CNT player not named Wang Yidi is another. Whether Shin Yubin is ready to challenge the bottom of the top is another. I wouldn't be surprised if the answers were not ready, not ready, not ready. But it is in Japan, maybe the crowd can do something for the home players. Mima will definitely need it vs Diaz
Her job is done. WYD is the hardest player to beat on the CNT and she did it twice.

Hayata's interview with renowned Japanese table tennis columnist ITO Jyota.

Interesting how she sees WYD as the most difficult to beat on the CNT and the struggle she went through in changing her stroke/form to reduce the stress/injuries to her body after Tokyo 2020 to even stand a chance for Paris 2024.

so if Ito won’t have a chance against the Chinese then who will? Hina? or Miwa?

i just don’t see anyone
Hirano. 67% win rate against CNT players after 4-3 SYS in WS F of WTT CT Zagreb 2023 (the only non-CNT player to beat SYS after Ito in 2019 and other firsts with that win). 57% win rate against CNT players after 0-3 CXT in WS R16 of ATTC 2023, her last WS event for 2023. 57% win rate in 2022 as well.

Hirano being the only one to take a game was also unexpected, even though I thought she had done the best in this Olympic cycle, which is also supported by her international stats, particularly the ~67% win rate against CNT players this year. I expected Hayata to do that. Ito played like shit as expected.

She has a Cup named after her (1st edition in 3/2024), so the question is when. Mizutani also has a few Cups named after him. The first one came in 2015 (when he was 3 months from turning 26) and second one came in 2019 (3 months from turning 30), so 6 and 2 years later. Can Ito last that long?

WYD is also the highest ranked WD player. Well done to Hina Hayata for having beat her twice.

Hayata admits that she hadn't been able to play to her satisfaction at all until the XTWC 2023. This is a match that makes her feel 2, 3 times more frustrating than usual. She wanted to repay those who came to support her and those who watched the broadcast/stream with results but is disappointed she couldn't do it.

Mixed zone interview with Hayata after 2-3 CM (Japan's IP needed)

So after what Diaz has shown again (was up in G1 too), there is no reason to rule out the possibility of Hirano after her track record in WT at ATTC 2023 and Asian Games 2022. She happened to take 1 game off LSW (2 games out of 9 encounters) in the WT F of ATTC 2017 when she was playing out of the world. That's expected of Hayata.

After having to sit out of the final at WTTC 2022, this is another blow to Hayata in the team event. Whether she insisted on playing is moot but if she did, that would call into question her capability to work as a team, let alone lead the team.

p.s.
A Chinese sub of the interview confirms that Hayata mentioned that CM's shot angle was different after coming out of the locker room and she didn't adapt to the change.

Harimoto's immaturity/inexperience shows in the mixed zone interview after 2-3 SYS. She feels down for not taking G3 but then can't tell for certain the game and score when she was leading before calling TO.

When asked about next year and the Paris 2024, she says it will start with Zennihon Takkyu and for Paris 2024, her odds are pretty low, and she is disappointed in today's match, but right now she is focused on solving her issues, so that she will become able to do what she was not next year.

When asked to rate this match, she gives it a 6 for regret and 4 for response (手応え doesn't translate well in English, think of satisfaction from rising to the challenge).

Nagasaki/Kihara vs WMY/SYS
51, 53 dead net for WMY, 75, 77, 87, 89 Nagasaki missed the FH on WMY's popup, 810, 1010, 1012
WMY/SYS come prepared this time and limit the diagonal shots of Nagasaki/Kihara to a minimum.
13, 43, 44, 84, 87 TO for JPN, 88, 118 two epic FH shots from Kihara
03 Nagasaki missed the high ball from WMY, 33, 34, 44, 411
01, 31, 33, 53 slight net for Nagasaki, 58, 68 TO for CHN, 108, 1012
This match came down to who could land as many parallel shots.

Revenge for WTGF 2019.
Japan beat China in China.
China beat Japan in Japan.

Nagasaki/Kihara were behine 6-8 in the 4th game. They caught 4 points in a row leading 10-8. Their close to the table punch worked so well.

Somehow they played further away from the table from then on.

Dam they were so close in winning the 4th game. But they let the CNT to take the next 4 points 😓😓

【WTT女子ファイナルズ】馬琳監督も本気になった。陳夢を追い詰めた早田ひな、ゲームオールで惜敗
https://world-tt.com/blog/news/archives/142053
"I'm good at applying rotation, but this time I'm looking to use my body to generate speed, and I'm changing the hitting point. I want to use my body to generate speed. There were times when I was able to execute what I practiced, but this time it wasn't the difference of one or two balls, but one ball of hesitaion during the rally that made the difference between victory and defeat. I feel frustrated that I wasn't able to do it even though I should have been able to do so."(Hayata)

p.s.
Hayata's comment about "this time it wasn't the difference of one or two balls" is actually a reference to she said after 2-3 CM back in April.
