I was referring to what the western world would call the “Big 5” of sports (soccer, basketball, hockey, baseball, American Football). I should’ve made it more clear. It was based on the previous posts in this thread

The "Big 5" still looks like a very subjective pretense... some of those sports are largely popular in the US, but are definitely not as big as you think elsewhere.
There are also sports that are huge in some countries, and I could bet that you probably haven't even heard of them...

while most people compare Europe to US with sports.
I like to suggest even the likes of zeio - who is chinese to compare its own country to table tennis and of which UTT is doing the same for India

both countries were rock bottom and table tennis helped China unite.
UTT is doing a lot of things privately, of which most will suggest the gov/federations should be doing.
but people like zeio tend to confuse UTT with TTFI (the Indian federation), why I say that? because he clearly quoted TTFI, while the OP link he posted is of WTT India - a JV between WTT and UTT (TTFI is not involved).

coming to what you guys are talking about Europe or US
each country has its market for different sports.
Of course there are some big sports and some small sports.

UTT's holding company (11sport) is involved with many sports, while UTT is only the TT project.
They (UTT) have been around since 2017 and have already uplifted table tennis a great deal - of course there are also many others that are not part of UTT doing a lot of hard work. But we can't dismiss that the rapid growth has got to do with a huge financial injection by this private company, the same part were no Chinese can deny that TT success is China is not related to its huge financial investment from the various sectors of government.

so you have some Frenchman say money is not needed
but so far the best TT countries in the world all need money to make TT work.
I am not sure why you have people even arguing about money or people who want to give money.

You remove money from French TT players and ask them to self fund they WTT journey - I want to see if Lebruns will continue playing :p

Passion can only get so far.
you need finance part, and that is something I am getting involved with, with some of the players I manage.
Last night I was at an award dinner for Chang Yu-An, and his father told me about another party that will give more financial sponsorship to Chang's Pro journey.
Without all those sponsors.... it is impossible for most players to turn pro - and this includes your Timo Bolls of the world. Because not everyone has rich folks.

After several weeks of travelling throughout "Incredible India", I was incredibly exhausted by the stress of daily life.

Whilst this country has given me some of the most incredible moments, and is undoubtedly home to some of the most incredible people on the planet, there is no denying that the less positive aspects have been equally intense.

In this video I simply picked up my camera to show you the reality of a simple walk to get coffee - something that we might otherwise take for granted anywhere else in the world.

I did not produce this for shock value, or indeed pick a rougher neighbourhood for effect (Chennai is one of the better places I have visited), but these are the things that led me to end my trip early and seek more dignified surroundings.

To the many educated Indians amongst you, I'm sure that you're as fed up as I am with these things. I am NOT discrediting the people (you deserve a lot better). But I expect that this will also attract comments from people who are emotionally invested in their country, and will deny (and in some cases, attack) any and all criticism.

Nothing that I say is untrue, and we should all accept that we are each entitled to our opinion, even though we may see things differently. This is very much my personal experience.

My hope is that I am able to inform fellow travellers who may be curious about visiting India, and to add to the chorus of those demanding change for a truly Incredible India.

zeio, you are so stuck into negativity.....
we are talking UTT and table tennis - especially you bought up WTT India.

when we talk about China and CNT, should we all start talking about China's bad too?
China has a long list of bad too....

I can see you have nothing to talk about UTT, and I wonder how much of your hate towards India, has gotten to do with China's politics with India?

If you even bothered listening to the TTD podcast with UTT boss, you can see their version about upliftment - same thing with the low class in China were one day. So I can't believe you laughing at others, while your own folks or grand folks were of the same low class just decades ago.

even today, you have Chinese tourist urinating or pooping in general public and making news for the wrong reasons. No country is perfect.

To recap.

1) A billionaire invests in sports/culture/arts and for the upliftment of the communities

2) they started a project in India since 2017 and now the biggest "private" TT organization that service grassroot to pros, in the world. They are doing more "good work" than some national federations.

3) They know for TT to be accepted by the wider audience, it needs to market it correctly (this is what WTT is trying to do, and not doing so great). So they focus an arm in event management. and with that, WTT India (an event management company) was formed.

while all this is public knowledge, they are also doing a lot of things discretely, of which I have listed.
So this is very good news for India and for all TT audience.

and then you have a zeio who focus on pooping and all other negative news - are you trying to override good news with your hatred to India? why can't you just appreciate the good news itself?

If we can have a dozen UTT billionaires doing the same thing in all parts of the world, table tennis status will raise a lot faster.

Why do you hate UTT/India
Is it because they success is a threat to China?

As always, feel free to convince the players and coaches. Even Yoshimura Maharu talked about getting soiled by bird droppings on his own YouTube channel, describing WTT SCT Chennai 2025 as "the tournament that is at one with nature". You were always quick to post about WTT's problems reported by players. Where was your scrutiny for this instance?

You're living in a bubble, ignoring all the problems with TTFI and UTT.

i talk about the good and the bad for everything
I have friends in CNT and WTT, I talk good about them and the bad about them.
even CNT players talk bad about CNT too, same within WTT.
every place has bad and people talk about it.

But you?
you only see the bad and you go on and on and on and on.
but you only see bad of others, never about your self or your own country.

so, stop making excuses for your character.
I am not like you and it does feel good that you look up towards me, but you are far from copying what I do.

Btw, I'm posting about UTT good things
you posting about India's bad things.

so if I post about India TT star players going to donate to schools in a new thread, are you going to come and talk about bird pooping again?
grow up

WTT keen to ride UTT wave in India growth bid
https://www.sportbusiness.com/news/wtt-keen-to-ride-utt-wave-in-india-growth-bid/
The final financial make-up of WTT India is still under consideration, SportBusiness has learned, but it will be majority-owned by WTT, with outside investment being sought, and based in Mumbai, India’s commercial capital.

Early-stage investment discussions are taking place with Vita Dani, co-founder and chair of the India-based UTT franchise league, which has just finished its sixth season.

Steve Dainton, chief executive of WTT, told SportBusiness that more small investors may come on board, with the establishment of WTT India set to cost anywhere between $3m (€2.6m) and $5m in total to get operational.

...

In 2024, UTT said the league saw 20 million viewers across TV and OTT, a 1.3-times increase from the previous year.

Those numbers will impress WTT, given its struggles to find an Indian broadcaster willing to commit to a multi-year deal to help build local interest in the sport. Outside of the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, there is little to no coverage of elite table tennis on Indian television.

...

While Indian athletes have competed in WTT events and the sport’s World Championships at both team and individual level, broadcaster buy-in has been somewhat selective.

In 2023, when India debuted as WTT event host with a Star Contender in Goa, the series was only available in India via WTT’s YouTube channel. Sony Pictures Networks did come on board to show the 2024 event in Goa, with both network and streaming coverage, as it did for this year’s Contender event in Chennai, but these have often been sporadic deals with no deep coverage commitment.

Indeed for this year’s ITTF World Championships in Doha in May, there was no television coverage at all in India, with fans having to turn to the ITTF’s own YouTube channel.

Dainton said: “We have a big job to do, not only in broadcast, but in sponsorship, and in general awareness. We’re starting small, humbly, but I think we will have a better chance if we have local professionals helping to drive that for us from there.

“Now the goal is for us to go in a different direction, probably together with UTT and package it up, so international [WTT] and domestic [UTT] rights in one bundle. That will ensure it is a bit more of a solid offering, rather than just their three-week domestic event and the few events that we have [in India].”

...

Dainton continued: “2026 will be about building up WTT India’s capacity as an event organiser so that we’re ready, either from 2027 or beyond, to take one of the bigger events there.

“The long-term goal is of course to bring either a Champions or a Smash to India, and maybe even looking – although it’s a different pathway – at a future ITTF World Championships. That all links to India’s ambition of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, as well.

“But for us, right now, this is really about establishing WTT India and growing that market and, hopefully, having India as one of the powerhouses in our sport in the long-term.”

India’s Ahmedabad 2036 Olympic bid speeds up even after IOC hits the brake on the selection process
https://gamesbids.com/eng/summer-ol...-ioc-hits-the-brake-on-the-selection-process/
But the IOC’s pause could delay the process for several months, and the findings from the working group could further extend the date of the next host election as the timing of such votes is now under scrutiny according to the president. Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 were elected 11 years ahead of their scheduled opening ceremonies, but both have reportedly encountered challenges with the long lead times. Previously the Games had been awarded only seven years in advance.

Now 11 years until 2036, India has been pushing forward and was widely considered a frontrunner in the process that has received interest from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, Nusantara in Indonesia, Santiago in Chile, South Africa, Egypt and North Jeolla, South Korea. European contenders include Germany, Istanbul, Budapest, Barcelona and Madrid.

Following bid reforms that were introduced in 2019 IOC members have been left out of most of the decision-making surrounding Olympic bids. The Executive Board and the IOC president instead nominated a single candidate for the IOC Session to approve and most of the process was shrouded in secrecy. India has strong ties with the Coventry and could be invaluable to the Olympic Movement with respect to sponsorships and revenue growth connected to the world’s most populous nation, and an Executive-led election could favor the nation’s bid.

Now Coventry has asked the working group to review member involvement in the process and that may help level the playing field.

India in 2030 from a South Indian movie.

Super Upendra Telugu Movie scenes | India in 2030 | Star Maa

Super (2010 Indian film)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_(2010_Indian_film)
Super depicts a Utopian India in the year 2030 where Indians are pictured to be wealthy, hard-working, and are seen wearing traditional clothing consisting of Ilkal saree and panche. In contrast, westerners are the ones taking care of menial jobs like taxi driving, janitorial, etc. It is a future where the Indian rupee is worth 70 times the pound sterling and people who cannot speak Kannada are considered illiterates (and Westerners are visibly apologetic about the same). From this setting, the film regresses back to the current year 2010 where India is beset with problems of corruption, red-tapism, pollution and unemployment. Political satire is played out by using sounds of horses and donkeys when ministers appear on the screen, which represents the political horse trading witnessed in recent times in the state of Karnataka.[14] Scenes of raping Indira and the auctioning process of an entire Indian state are interspersed to draw a parallel between the two.[15] The film finds a climax back in 2030 where a foreigner asks an Indian as to who was responsible for all the good changes in India, and the film ends abruptly again with the index finger pointing at the audience, symbolizing that it's the people who are ultimately responsible for the course of a nation.[citation needed]

Hope you have a nice stay, Trivandrum is a nice place.
If you haven't been before, do visit the beaches near it (Kovalam/Varkala/Shangumugham).

Thanks a lot. It was a nice and intensive visit. Work before the TUG conference, then the conference itself, meeting a lot of people, and then some meetings/work afterwards, altogether 11 days + travel. We did visit Kovalam beach, beautiful, in a nice hotel above it. I/we have been there already once, I even swam there, but not this time.

@Tony's Table Tennis I didn't contact you. I knew it will be super tight, there was no time to visit some club. Our mother company though, has a campus, and they arranged a TT table, so we hit 3x with my friend. Very good. Now I'm back, itching to play. Cheers and thanks for the proposal, perhaps next time.

At the start of September, @NDH and his team visits us... Really looking forward... We plan to make team building for a weekend right before, to be ready for you guys ;-)

Qatar joins the 2036 race.

Heat is on for Qatar's Olympic dream
https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1154420/heat-is-on-for-qatars-olympic-dream
Doha officially threw its hat into the crowded ring to host the 2036 Games last week, positioning itself as the 'ready to go' option with "95% of the required sports infrastructure in place." However, the bid committee must navigate one of the Olympics' biggest emerging obstacles yet: the climate.

...

IOC President Kirsty Coventry told The Athletic back in March that the climate crisis would open up the Games for flexibility to better provide optimal conditions for the athletes. "Do we need to remain steadfast on when we hold the Games? I think we have to start that conversation to open up new regions and countries, but also just to tackle climate change.

"We have an incredible amount of interest in the Games for 2036 and 2040 from new regions, which is exciting," Coventry added. "It opens up the question of the timing of the Games and we need to be proactive about that, both summer and winter."

Such a pitty you haven't been with me for the TUG2025 conference in Trivandrum. You'd learn the true Indian hospitality. You'd enjoy the fantastic food, you'd enjoy the conference, even when it is not your real focus - same is true for me, but you'd still enjoy it, get your head elsewhere, new ideas coming/springing, you'd enjoy really interesting, surprising, and nice people, you'd meet the famous caligrapher, you'd ask him to write your wife's name on the paper (to ensure safe return back home ;-), you'd finally enjoy having a hit with me ;-) OK, next time...

Look, I know there is still things to be done in India. E.g. if I compare airport procedure in TRV vs Abu Dhabi, it is quiter smoother in Abu Dhabi, and yes, in TRV they may tend to complicate/duplicate things, but they are still honest and well meaning... Of course conference for cca 60-70 people is different scale than Olympic games, but I don't see why it is not doable, esp. after next 11 years... It's not the state of country's development that matters here. The other thing is so much more important. And you know it... It's actually boring not to do (focus on) it nowadays, esp. when you are well aware (and I know you are) of what's going on around us... In german I'd say: wer moechte staendig in der Ecke kotzen? ;-)
