Hi all,

I would like to start this thread to open the guess game, and see until next year who can get the correct guess or at least very close, so hope this will be a good discussion about Olympics table tennis game as well.

For me, my guess will be the following:

Men Singles:

Gold: Ma Long
Silver: Xu Xin
Bronze: Zhang Jike

Women Singles:

Gold: Ding Ning
Silver: Liu Shiwen [i want her to be the gold winner, but her style is not getting great this year]
Bronze: Li Xiaoxia

Men Doubles:

Gold: China
Silver: C.Taipei
Bronze: S.Korea

Women Doubles:

Gold: China
Silver: Japan
Bronze: S.Korea

We don't know until end of this year and until the beginning of next year before the Olympics ceremonies who will be the champions on different tours/titles, and who will be injured, anything can happen, but if things go smoothly and normally then i feel it won't go far than what i expect for singles, i am not a fan of doubles but i know that China is dominating last years since 2000 in Olympics, so i think they will keep that in next Olympics too.

What do you vote or guess?

Xu Xin will never get out of semi-finals as long as ML,ZJK and FZD are still in it....

What do you mean by that? never get out mean he will qualify to finals? i did give him silver medal anyway so it means he is in the final, or do you mean he will not qualify to semi final too?

Yep, those are the rules set by the International Olympic Committee so a maximum of two players per country - any country - are allowed to enter the TT competition.

When did that rules issued? I didn't know about that, so then i have to change my votes or guess again.

After seeing China took all Gold, Silver and Bronze medals with 3 China flags hanging high in 2008 Olympic, ITTF decided to limit the number of each country to 2 players in single events so at least one player from outside China can stand at the podium. That's one reason why we were able to see Ovtcharov taking Bronze in London.

Not quite. The ITTF didn't make that decision. As table tennis governing body they only have jurisdiction over their own competitions and can not decide on the rules for the Olympics. That's the job of the IOC (the International Olympic Committee).

To limit the number of athletes from a country in a given sport has been a goal for the IOC for many years. The reason is that they want to keep the overall number of participants, but at the same time introduce new sports and grow the global appeal of the OG that way. If they do not impose limitations, the number of athletes will simply balloon out of control over time, and cause serious problems or the organisers.

The ITTF works in more than mysterious ways sometimes, but this is one silliness they can not be blamed for. :)

I am not sure but all I read is that in an ITTF Executive Committee meeting, a vote of 14 to 1 pass that proposal for the London 2012 Olympics with strong opposition by China. And all later questions were addressed to and answered by the former ITTF president Mr. Sahara. I belive IOC is there to limit the total number of players and events for each sport, not sure if they are interested in the details to limit competition or what else.

Agree - ITTF made the changed from 3-2 in Olympic, just like the new WTTC.
All information on "meeting minutes (executive committee meeting" is available on ITTF website

The reason for change according to ITTF was to allow other countries to have more medals.
