World Championship of Ping Pong, 22-24th January 2016, Alexandra Palace, London, England

The prestigious World Championships of Ping Pong begins next week on Friday 22nd January and concludes on the 24th January. The spectacular event uses traditional sandpaper rackets which were used in the early days of ping pong. What we really love about this event is how each player is given the exact same racket and they battle in the famous Alexandra Palace!

There are 64 qualified ping pong players from all around the world both men and women who compete for a incredible $100,000 prize pot!

I had lots of fun with some of the qualifiers and players (Ashley Stokes, Dean Cundy, Mario Genovese, Egle Adomelyte, Martin Gunn and Robin Ashleigh) for the upcoming World Champs of Ping Pong!

Enjoy :) It is not easy playing against these guys!

Oooweeee. Nice vid, Dan. These guys and gal(s) are pretty good.

I think that there is such a big acceptance and such a buzz about this form of our beloved tabletennis, is because this type of the game is not that much based on spin like tabletennis with inverted rubbers, and hence much easier to understand for the average Joe who doesn't really know what spin is and what spin can do.

But please don't get me wrong. No belittleling right here.

These players are really good, and honestly i'm not sure if i could beat one of them, even if i was allowed to use inverted rubbers, since i hardly play against players using these kinda rackets...

I am thinking a lot of these players are guys who played smooth with sponge, learned technique with sponge and then learned to adapt the technique to hardbat. Is that accurate?

How many of these guys are hardbat purists who never play with sponge and never have (or basically never)?

One thing I have to say that I think sad about this:

LOOK WHAT GREAT PRIZE MONEY these guys will earn and how many ITTF World Tour tournaments have a a much lower payout and less sponsorship. How come table tennis has so much trouble getting in the limelight and "Ping Pong" seems not to.

Well, I know, Suga_D really already explained this.

I'm not a good TT player. But hardbats have a lot more options with regards to angles, spin and slowing the ball than sandpaper. Sandpaper to me, a low level player, is like normal sandwich bat play but with far less spin and speed. In other words, it's a very pure form of the game were there are no surprises for the players with regard to spin.
Another way to look at it, take up 2 bats and no rubber that's the same as sandpaper play.
