ttmonster, the idea of swiping has merit. We may experiment with it after all the shots are in the app, but I'm not guaranteeing this will ever go into production. Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming.

Thanks Brett, sure will keep them coming as they come to me :p . The reason I suggested because I started thinking about this and playing with one thumb instead of two even though it meant sacrificing some bonus points , intuitively it seems more helpful that way ...

As I said, it has merit. One issue is we intend to implement some competition into the app. There will need to be a standard way of playing for competition to be valid. If one person is using 2 hands and another is using one, it wouldn't make sense.

This is a really useful video. And I love the view options for the serve on the app. Good stuff.

Thanks Carl. The videos in the series obviously need to be part of a balanced training schedule as they have little value by themselves.

The observe mode in the app was a great idea. It wasn't my idea, so I think I can say that. Forum members have contributed to many of the innovations and will continue to do so. I think the app is still only 20% complete.

The one thing I noticed was that since we play with a single hand , instead of having a button as a response , why not have something similar to a joystick , where the responder can put his finger and wait for the stimulus and then swipe left or right ....
I will definitely let you know if I have any other specific suggestions ..
you could do similar gestures for top or underspin ...etc

ttmonster, your swipe left or right idea is now in the app. It will be available on the upcoming weekend.

There is a current IOS update available now with new modules etc.

Thanks Brett, I looked at it briefly and it seemed pretty exciting. Off the bat, my reaction times improved immediately and it felt very smooth compared to buttons before. But I will try it for a while to come up with an honest opinion.

@UpSideDownCarl : You mentioned that there is way to toggle between buttons and swipe , I could not find it in iOS version, where is it located ?
Regarding not liking the swipe, see if this helps, visualize that you have a paddle in hand and keep your finger in the middle and then visualize you reacting to the shot that you see on screen with the paddle in hand. Intuitively, this would me more attuned with having to use two thumbs.

The toggle swipe/tap button is circled in blue. It's in today's update.

Carl, I'm thinking you need to update to the latest version. The swipe is clearly a more intuitive method.

Yeah. What I notice with the swipe is, if I get it right I have a faster time. But the swipe doesn't feel natural to me. So, my thumb sometimes goes left when my brain says right and vice versa. But that also happens with tapping. Just not as often.

Swipe feature: the red arrows appear. But, I hadn't tried it till this morning. But, interestingly, when you said the swipe feature was ready I played the version for tapping and you can actually just swipe with the tap version and it works as though you tapped.

Truthfully though, I would have to play it more to get used to either version and have my brain just choose the correct swipe or tap. For me, the swipe or the tap don't quite duplicate a whole body movement that is about adjusting to more than just the side the ball is going to. Those small adjustments of the ball being three inches to the left instead of twelve However, it is still good mind training.

And to me the serve features are really great stuff.

For me, the swipe feels a little more like when I'm playing. When I swipe the wrong way, I get that bad feeling which I get in live TT when I react wrong. Of course the whole body doesn't get as involved and it's just a add-on to your real training.

This app has driven me crazy with service. The multiball is truly great for me because it increases my processing speed and reactions. But the service....

When I read serves I read the trajectory and watch the spin of the ball, I never have really watched the contact of someones serve. and when I can't see the ball spinning or my side of the table I can't get any right. I'm probably less than 50% on service on this app, which is sad because that's what it should be if I just randomly tap a choice.

Whenever I've tried to watch contact for serves in the past it would allow me to be deceived by their motion. Maybe it's because I'm low level and haven't had to deal with the truly spectacular serves but watching contact is just something I don't do.

I think its not fair to break it down to "watching the motion" and "watching the contact" , you have to watch for both. What I noticed in the app. is that if you just watch the Contact, it can be misleading. In some of the serves the contact points are the same but there are subtle difference in the motion , especially in the no spin - underspin modules. I am not saying its easy but just thought I will get it out there if it helps .... serving modules are definitely more difficult than multiball ones ...

It all depends on your expectations. I find the serving modules far easier than the mulitiball modules. With the multiball modules, I am trying to anticipate and it is very difficult. I usually get the serves right these days.

And you are 100% right - it's not just about the contact but about capturing the whole serve. The swing and contact is obviously the focus but other things/cues can be picked up consciously and subconsciously as well. One of the app servers, I find it almost impossible to read his contact, but I almost always subconsciously pick up his follow through.

is it incorrect for me to read serves the way I do since I don't watch the stroke or the contact? is it important to do this? or is it okay that I just watch the ball, it's worked for me so far and I hate being deceived by motion of a person so that's why I learned to do this.

No its not incorrect to read the serves the way you are doing. But how are good are you with reading spins on corkscrew serves . I practice with my friend who is around 2200 level , japanese penhold and he is really good at reading spin from trajectory , in fact he does not even care whether you have anti or long pips, he does not even ask or check the rubber, however I have seen him struggle against corkscrew serves because the trajectory is not that different even when the axis of spin is changed
