you'll get it sir ! its a matter of time

i thought I'd never get it, now i cannot play at all if I was given Mark V or Sriver again... (i grew up with those rubbers)

Agreed. Very frustrating though, during warmup or training, my shots are bouncing off the tensor rubber and landing in, but during matchplay, my shots always fly off and not landing LOLOL

Fun, fun, fun!!!

Thank you Sir!

It's might be because you don't hit the ball at the top. During training you can use the right power - spin ratio, but during matchplay when you try to hit the ball stronger you can't generate enough spin, or you generate enough spin but this add more power. Next time try to conscientiously contact the ball at it's top and you will see that you can land much more loops.

The most obvious reason I can think of is , your hands are not relaxed during the match but they are during practice ....

Following this thread isn´t that easy and probably could end up as a full time job. You guys really have a high output or using OSPH´s terminology: you chatty bunch, you.
[Emoji12]
Took me a minute to read trough the last ten pages.

I get it. That's one that's tricky for me as well. Sure I could flatten out my paddle (basically parallel to the ground) and contact the bottom of the ball going forward to get a good amount of backspin but i don't like that version of the serve because I think it's a dead give away what it is... No deception. Furthemore, that's not really out of the pendulum serve.

I've been having success thinking of it this way. Try this out.

So you are doing your pendulum motion. The way I see it, you can either get side/back (I don't think you can get pure back out of the pendulum motion give the way the blade is angled. There always will be some element of side IMO) on the early part of your pendulum swinging downward (which I think is probably the most common way IDK) or at the very end of the swing...

"Wait what suds? wouldn't the end of the pendulum swing be more of topspin when the blade is coming up?" :p True. But not if you're focusing on trying to hit more on the front of the ball. A nice plus is that it's easy to switch between your side/top. Side/top your either contact more of the side or back of the ball at the end of your pendulum serve. Or side/back if at the end of your pendulum serve you're trying to contact more front of the ball. It's almost like you're scooping the ball. I will say if you do this, try to really get some force into the ball because it wont' have much forward momentum. Truth of the matter is you'll probably never actually hit the pure front of the ball but your scooping action coming under the ball will probably be more.

There are videos kinda demonstrating this but lets take a look at that famous Ma Lin backspin service video where he's bringing the ball back into the net over & over. (Side note we should take into account this was back in the celluloid days) There is no way on a high toss he can hit the back of the ball and generate that much spin to do that. I'm convinced he's hitting the front of the ball which is aided by the high toss.

Something to think about. There are videos of people showing they can do this. But I think 95% of them are all done with extremely high bounces that would get killed so take that into account. Not an easy serve to do.

Nice example. I think Carl posted this already a while ago, but I just couldn´t resist to post it again.
So here you go:

If you haven't figured it out yet...

The blocker is good. He has a loop too. I don't know what this talk about him "not really knowing how to play" is.

Well despite his technical flaws, his consistency is quite good.

MichalZ,

That's obviously a good player.

But MichalZ is totally understandable to me. I really hate it losing against players with this kind of technique, too. So glad he could finally beat him.

Hi Michal_Z,
I just wanted to comment your video seen from my view. The guys have commented on a lot of good points. This is what I noticed in the first set.
As TT monster pointed out is that you need to move the blocker more when you have the service. The game of a blocker is usually fed by the opponents power so slow spinny and flat loops are difficult for him to counter or block. I think I saw one at 1.32. In the open game you really need more variation on the placement of the ball. You tend to play him in either in FH or BH. What makes a good table tennis player good is if a player has a plan a,b,c etc. and leave your opponent guessing all the time. Mix your game up and you will see a difference.

hey, finally you´ve also joined in this thread too. Good one.

And you would be surprised how much it can help if you play on a slippery court.

+1 totally agreed

I don't recall how many posts/pages ago on this thread i mentioned i noticed many players seemingly flat-footed to me and how i learned to be on the balls of my feet for TT and other athletic endeavors. I chalked it up to something 42andbackpains said ... CNT team are almost gliding, they are seemingly not on the balls of their feet.

Of course, they are also professional athletes and I'm not. Older and slower, if i was flatfooted i would be even slower lol.

Watch tennis players, boxers or basketball players, etc. Most if not all will be on the balls of their feet.

No surprise this is coming from an MMA Fighter!

Hey guys and welcome nas3to!

Had a really great day today, in fact the last couple of training sessions have been.
Did some work on my forehand topspin inspired from Fan Zhendongs forehand, starting with an almost straight arm.

I also tried out the backhand loop with a more backhand oriented grip, with the thumb up the rubber. Still need to get the right angle to put in force and how to use the wirst right. Well its just something i am playing around in training.

I also had my best wins so far, in fact three of them in a row. First I beat an uprising player in our club 3:0 (he beat me 3:0 first, then i returned the favor) He should be around 200-2100 in USttr, the next day i beat a player i never had a chance against 3:1 he should be rated around 1900 now. He used to play in the second Bundesliga, but that's a long time ago.
The today i beat a woman from germany with a ttr of 1500 which translates roughly to 1900 USttr.

I am having a blast right now playing tt :) i try to use my body more in my strokes using a broader and lower stance.

Ah and I almost forgot about this badboy here:
View attachment 13405

It says: Best Player of the Team, meaning overall and relatively I have the best record winning against higher rated player and not losing against player rated the same or lower than me.

Congrats Boogar, good show, well done, Herr Meister.
:)

Had one of my best footwork and forehand days in a long time. Went 3-2 in the league, beat Big M 3-1, and pulled out 2 tight matches, one against a guy with the most powerful forehand in the club deuce in the 5th and one against the pips out penholder from 0-2 down (in both matches, I do my own version of NextLevel Tomokazu, which is not the same as listening to a 13 year old but has a more visible fist pump). Lost 0-3 to a guy with nasty serves, and 1-3 to a college student who has had my number for like 3 years now.

Point of the day, including my tcho:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NtlH3wv4ytg&t=836

In any case, lots of good points, lots of acrobatic shots, my backhand paid the bills to help me win a match I probably should have lost, and I have to credit my tactical cap for my win over Big M.

You gotta change your name to NTL then ( Next Tomokazu Level)

Hahaaa, guys this is good..
I just had another training yesterday, another 5 euro match against the blocker..
In the first game he had luck, having like 4-5 net quotes and one edge, I won 11:7, then second game 11:3 and third 11:4, easy win 3:0 ..
After that he said - he cannot play for money with me, because he is not playing any good, it gives him litterally nothing..
He didnt realise, that this is the tactic change I made after you guys gave me some advices..
So I guess I am not going to make any more money out from him, lol :)

NextLevel, I saw some your matches, you really need to get more into your knees, so you put more of the hips motion into your shots and your game will step up to the NextLevel ;)

Congrats. Goodie

And according to me, unless you are Koki Niwa, that response will get you in trouble. You have to pump yourself up to play. That said, this is a league match, but this is my first league match against him in a while. I just could not believe that I lost the first two games 11-9 despite looping the ball well so I didn't want to lose in a way that would have him in my head for the next matches we play.
:)
I wish you could have lent him a decent pair of shorts :) , this guy would even put Jean Michel Saive to shame .. :)
This made me laugh hard. Thanks monstar.

I am sure it will help the footwork though ..
To express myself in OSPH manner: lololol

Sorry for the novel, guys, but to whom it may concern...

I was totally frustrated last weekend, 'cause due to a chain of bad luck i couldn't make it to the WTTC.
I was really looking forward in having a meetup with Dan, or maybe see Matt in real life and also meet Baal there but unfortunately i had some kind a leak in my car and it was loosing oil rapidly which i had to find out just on the night before i wanted to drive to the WTTC which is about 250km from where i stay, so absolutely impossible driving there before this was fixed. :(
So i took it to the garage the next morning, but unluckily they had to order that part and it wouldn't be there before Friday eve. :( :(
This was on thursday morning. So i changed my plans and was hoping to maybe at least see Dan ,(since i knew already from Baal that he wouldn't be there on the weekend) and wanted to drive there either saturday or sunday and asked in different FB groups if someone still had a ticket to sell for sunday, since i had to cancel saturday. And i even found someone trustable (works for a Butterfly store and is also a coach for advanced kids) that was willing to sell his ticket to me, but then i had to cancel that again, because meanwhile the garage called that the wrong part came and my car wouldn't be fixed before Tuesday morning.

But Baal told me that he would be around the corner from where i stay the night before his flight goes back to the states.
So then i tried to find a club near us where we could play a little, but all clubs in my area and that i was cool with the guys there, weren't open on that evening. But then the bad luck turned into good luck and i found a gym in Frankfurt where we could rent a table for two hours with the option for another hour. Meanwhile the garage called that my car was repaired now and i was totally lucky to find the leak before i drove up to Düsseldorf 'cause that would've killed the motor. :)
Just out of the blue i then had an idea and called the janitor of our club if i could play at our club and he told me that I got lucky 'cause usually wednesday is already booked out by different sections of our club but one group cancelled their practice 'cause their season is over and we could play there which was much better cause we didn't have to keep the time in mind. So then Baal, my friend David who also stays in Houston and me ended up playing there (well maybe 50% playing 50% talking which still was totally fine for me)
Our time was a bit short (only 2.5 hours cause i came home late from work) but i had a total blast.
:) :) :)
Unfortunately i was so hyped up i totally forgot to take pics. Sorry guys.

(@NL: i know if there's no cam it didn't happen. But still it somehow did :) I'll promise next time to not lose my cool and think of pics or a vid. PROMISE)

@Baal:
Thanks a lot for spending time. Even though it was short i enjoyed every second to the fullest.
You play really good. It really was so refreshing playing with you. Great counterlooping off the bounce. I really like that. No one in our league plays like that.
Hope to repeat this as soon as possible. No matter where.
:)
I somehow really feel blessed.

Suga and David are fantastic human beings and my next trip to Germany I'm going to make a point of spending more time around Frankfurt! Suga moved mountains so we could play, and conditipns were great. I am really grateful for that because my other attempt to play in Germany came on a holiday.

Playing was great, but talking about everything in the world was better. I was bummed out to leave. Next time we will add beer to the agenda.

I was just watching this, very interesting. Liu Guoliang talking about the pressures and the issues he's had to deal with. I was surprised to find out the CNT wasn't particularly popular among young people before rio and that they suddenly gained lots of popularity after the event. You can tell how smart he his, his ability to find solutions to all these problems.. the way he acknowledges every issue, is able to adapt to change or incorporate change which is a challenge for everyone. No wonder he's achieved so much.

I hit with the chopper in my club today. It helped me realize what had gone wrong with my Chiquita. I have become a very big fan of the Kim Jung Hoon blade and the handle design. I wish more blades with limba were designed like that. Korean blades have smaller wings that Japanese blades in general but Nexy is even smaller than Xiom. This allows you to hold the handle pretty well and get a lot of whip without the blade slipping out of your hands. It has helped me remember what my backhand loop against chop swing was like and it helped me remember what my over the table backhand loop swing was like as well. I hacked a few of my blades to reduce the wings to see if I could reproduce the KJH feeling but while they felt better, nothing came close enough. So I might be stuck with the KJH for a while.

Stuck with a KJH isn't such a bad thing. KJH has a great control and feel at impact to go along with what NL sez. I have had that as my main blade for 2 yrs + since coming back to the sport after a forced layoff. Has a lower gear and an enhanced top gear when you crack it. Make no mistakes, it wont be an OFF+ juggernaut, but you land shot after shot with pressure.

I have been using the LISSOM a lot lately and like the prototype version of M+ on my FH and my old-school stand by rubber XP 2008 on BH. I get along just fine, even if the weight is 206 grams.

You will simply CRAVE all the pedestrian only zone action near the Alte Oper, there is a wonder espresso shop, you will know as jokers are lined up OUTSIDE the door to get a shot or a slice of Kaesekuchen...

I will have to go to Germany to cause trouble like SugaD and Baal & Co did... EPIC.

You are very welcome whenever you're in the area, or when you have a stopover.
Lookin' forward.
:)

Thanks Baal, glad you enjoyed it as much as we did. Always great having such a nice conversation with an intelligent person.
But you're right. We somehow really missed to add a few cold blondes.
;)
Next time i won't let this happen.

Jea big ttd meet up in germany :D !

You are absolutely welcome. Let's make it happen.

I haven't been there yet, but that definitely sounds good. I think we need to go there. :)

My stated hometown is not all that far away. I have had dozens of visits to that area. Every city has pedestrian only zones with great stuff. That area has much more high end shops than some others.

If Baal has an auto, you should have him take A66 until it runs out into B42 just west of Wiesbaden. Take B42 all the way to Koblenz. So many sights to see on that road following the Rhein... Then come back down B9 to Bingen.
