Is my racket legal/available for competition play?

I tested something on the backside of my blade by putting some red tape so that it kinda resembles a Jpen. Just wondering, but could it be possible to use this in a competition? If yes or no, please share your opinions.

I'm checking https://www.ittf.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/T4_Racket_Coverings_forBOD2017-without-deletings.pdf and don't see any requirement mandating both sides of the blades be covered.

Actually, the very first sentence suggests that one or two are allowed, in the general definition of a racket: “The racket consists of blade, adhesive, and racket covering(s) with or without sponge.”

That's fine. Tried that as a kid to get more grip since those plastic adhesive sheets were slippery af. Velvet sheets are a better alternative.

Basically trying to replicate this, with the exception of a longer handle and a black side painted.

If the rubber on the other side is black, I think you are good.

Cork is OK, but some sponge is even better. Your fingers will thank me.

Well ofc i should have a black rubber on the other side. I happen to have a Sriver on the FH for now since i intend to become a Jpen style technique.

The side, not used for striking the ball may have a color sheet (opposite of the other side used for striking the ball)... and on the side not used for striking the ball where you rest the fingers, you mak have cork there if you wish - many do and many J-Pen bats come that way.

You could just leave it with nothing too, the rules cover the side USED for striking the ball... but yes... there is a long tradition to make the non-striking side covered with a color sheet of the opposite color of the striking side... but that is not mandatory, unless Der_Echte wants to clean every bathroom in ITTF HQ for being wrong...

2.4.3 A side of the blade used for striking the ball shall be covered with either ordinary
pimpled rubber, with pimples outwards having a total thickness including
adhesive of not more than 2.0mm, or sandwich rubber, with pimples inwards or
outwards, having a total thickness including adhesive of not more than 4.0mm.


2.4.6 The surface of the covering material on a side of the blade, or of a side of the
blade if it is left uncovered, shall be matt, bright red on one side and black on
the other
With effect 1st October 20211, the surface of the covering material on a side of
the blade, or of a side of the blade if it is left uncovered, shall be matt, black on
one side, and of a bright colour clearly distinguishable from black and from the
colour of the ball on the other.

But they also make clear that one side has to be red and one black, no matter if there is a rubber on them or not. (4.6.)

So leaving with "nothing" would not be ok.
