Much-needed win for Harimoto and much much-needed loss for Togami. Hari always proves his fighting spirit even during great adversity, he focuses on one point at a time without trying to go for the kill right away and varies spin/placement to invite mistakes from his opponent. Today god test him and he did it!

Togami once again re-lives his lost at Taiyuan, 2 match point in 6th and 8 in the 7th and he still can't finish the match. Harimoto has been closing the technique gap but Togami hasn't improve his mental much. I'm worry for his upcoming Olympic singles

Harimoto overtakes Kihara to finish 4th. No other notable changes. Interesting to note that even if Miwa had won and Ito earned zero points this time, Ito would still be ahead by exactly 1 point.

Also, note that Miwa achieved fourth place with ZERO singles points from WTTC, Asian Champs, and Asian Games.

Adjusted for points from international tournaments:

Ito had a 60 point handicap over Hirano which the latter neutralised somewhat with wins over SYS and WYD + an Asian Games singles spot (10 + 15 + 10 = 35) and still didn't make it. Taking away points from her international performances really shows just how much better Harimoto has been performing over the past year.

Back in 2018 everyone thought he will win many more the next few years but then he stagnated somehow. I'm glad he won his second, it's well deserved. Togami could have won another one with 8? match points though.

I think Togami is progressing nicely, this loss is just what it is and not the end of it. If he can stay at this level and bring it to international matches and Shinozuka and Matsushima fill in the lefty spot, Japan should have 3 players in top 20 and will be real threats to Germany as the World #2.

Back in 2018 everyone thought he will win many more the next few years but then he stagnated somehow. I'm glad he won his second, it's well deserved. Togami could have won another one with 8? match points though.

I think that his performance at the national championships revealed his fundamental issues - what I find interesting about this match is how many unforced errors on serve receive be was able to get out of a teammate like Togami. It didn't happen on crucial points though and he was forced to win this match with rallying abilities especially on forehand. Hopefully the progress will continue.

In an important sense, he was rushed by Japan to meet 2021 Olympic goals but if he had been built out on a Chinese time table, his target would have been 2028. And his game would have been revised to play away from the table much earlier. But all this is easier to see now with the hindsight of all the wrong paths taken.

Rewatching it, I want to applaud him for the chase he made from 5-10 to 9-10 in the 5th set. If Harimoto failed to close the set there he would've taken this match 4-1 as usual.
