Harimoto played ok, but his style is overly dependant on bang bang fast paced rallying. When he gets hot, its amazing how many difficult shots he can retrieve with pace. When he is hot, he might be the best rallyer in the world. But it looks hard to do over an entire tournament.

Matsushima is younger, but plays a more "professional" style. He plays a lot more short points, creates and finishes more opportunity balls. He almost had fzd on the ropes a few times.
That is Harimoto's specialty, the oppressive close to table BH and he thrives in this. Imo Harimoto's FH showed a lot of improvement here, his FH was able to keep up with his BH in terms of speed and continuity.

Unfortunately for him, Wang Chuqin doesn't play that game with him. It's all serve/receive/3rd ball fiesta with Wang Chuqin, and he is exceedingly good at it. Harimoto simply cannot play his rallying game until he has deciphered the nasty Wang Chuqin serve and receive.

Imo Harimoto is actually equal with Wang Chuqin in the rally, it's just that he is simply at a huge disadvantage even from serve/receive, and you can't play a game with such a handicap.

There was some promise when Harimoto started serving reverse pendulum. Will see if he will continue to develop the serve. I think it is very effective in confusing and jamming Wang Chuqin's aggressive chiquita.

Is Groth another player whose star is hard to track? Sometimes he is the second coming of Boll and then sometimes he is the second coming of Maze post injuries.
Thanks to WTTC 2024 for reminding me this question I asked of Michael Maze (I don't know if Dan relayed the question)...

Jonathan Groth, WR18 as of 10/2018, has been making great strides in the singles since the Rio Olympics. In your opinion, what does he need to crack into the top 10?

Groth played like there was no tomorrow.

Never thought Shibaev would have so much trouble with lefties.

An article by Takagi Mina on Tasei apologizing to his players for the poor draw. Harimoto was watching the live stream in his room while gluing his rubbers. He was in a confused state after seeing the draw and he had doubt about his glue job even until the next afternoon...

https://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/tabletennis/news/2024/02/032941.html
so I'm guessing Tasei also pick the draw back at Chengdu 2022 and the Asian games in Hangzhou right? he has a cursed hand lmao

How do you look at the full lineups without waiting for matches to start? WTT website is a nightmare to navigate.

No known way. The full lineups disappear once the match is under way. Very poor user experience.

Indeed, Harimoto will never win from Wang again and will stick to 1 win. Rather, it will be one of his teammates who will be able to win from Wang CQ
the same can be applied to every other non-Chinese hey
having 1 win is so difficult
throughout recent history, who has "many wins" against Chinese

I suspect this won't age well. Harimoto is amazingly still improving. Wang is at his peak
That's funny.
The Wang that I saw yesterday didn't even look like the typical Wang in rallies. I suspect because he wasn't holding the table as much. But we'll see.

Maybe because Harimoto has improved enough in 3 to 4 months that Wang didn't obliterate him as badly as he would have prior to this?

Let's see how it goes.
