Timo....
Former world no 1
in 2005, he won the men's world cup, beating Wang Liqin, Ma Lin and Wang Hao to get there, all 4-3 scores.
Career record vs
Ma Lin won 6, loss 13
Wang Liqin won 5, loss 8
Wang Hao won 4, loss 11
Ma Long won 4 loss 16
Zhang Jike won 2 loss 6
Xu Xin won 1 loss 5
Very humble and friendly sport star. 2 of my close contacts played with Timo in his German club. One of them had the luxury of getting picked up by a young (but tall) Timo in his mini every morning.
Chuang
Former world no 3
When facing Harimoto (Chuang more than double his age).... this remind me of few months before Harimoto was born, Chuang was silver medalist at the Asian champs and winner of the ITTF Pro Tour grand finals.
Career record vs
Ma Lin won 2, loss 8
Wang Liqin won 3, loss 5
Wang Hao won 2, loss 14
Ma Long won 2 loss 14
Zhang Jike won 3 loss 2
Xu Xin won 1 loss 8
When both was in their pinnacle, they both beaten CNT strongest era top 3 and was 2 of the main guys on the wall of the Chinese training center hall - the photos on the wall listed as the main enemies.
I can't tell much about Timo's history, but for Chuang, he led the way for LJY to have a much more "budget friendly" life.
When Chuang was having his best years, he was not even getting (10%) of what LJY was getting before his Tokyo medal. The Men's world champion with Chen Chien-An and his Asian Champ medal paved ways for more corporates in Taiwan to sponsor table tennis. Chuang's mom had to sell 3 properies to fund Chuang development when he was 15 ~ 17 years old. Yes, the story was 1 property a year.
Table tennis in Taiwan does owe a great deal to Chuang and he is respected as the "father" of table tennis in Taiwan.
This would be the last olympics, but he could still stay on to mentor his students international. He could still play WTT, or he might just retire as a player and sit by the coaches bench full time.
Never the less, it is impossible to have 1, yet alone 2 players that cause great headache to CNT's strongest era and last for over 20 years.
Was good memories watching you both play!
