He didn't feel like trying 2 or 3 times harder in MS after losing in XD, as he would've spun out of control. [Think of Hayata who could've cost the WT the final] He planned to allocate 30% for XD, 30% for MS and 30% for MT. And he doesn't think he will medal unless he improves in the next 4 years. The Olympics are also not the stage to take lightly by simply saying "next time".

1回目の負けは混合ダブルスだった。7月27日の初戦。早田ひなと組む“はりひな”は、前回の水谷隼、伊藤美誠組に続く金メダル候補に挙げられていた。だが、実力未知数の北朝鮮ペアに1－4で敗戦。2日後のシングルス初戦勝利後も、悔しさを隠さなかった。

「1～2日で忘れられるわけがない。でも混合で負けたから、シングルスを2～3倍頑張ろうとは思わない。空回りする。前から（混合）30％（個人）30％（団体）30％と思っている」

2回目の負けはシングルス準々決勝。8月1日、世界王者の樊振東（中国）を追い詰めた。3－3の最終第7ゲーム（G）。7－6とリードも、5連続失点で屈した。4年後を思った。

「オリンピック本番が一番大事だけれど、ここからの4年間で僕が格上にならなければ、メダルはないと思う」

3回目の負けは団体準々決勝。8月6日、台湾戦の第2試合で相手エース林■（■は日ヘンに句の口が二）儒に2－3で敗れた。日本は3勝1敗で4強入りしたが、自らを奮い立たせた。

「ここだけは自分の信念を曲げる。今日のエース対決（の負け）を明日絶対に取り返す」

翌7日、スウェーデンとの準決勝第2試合。エース対決で勝ちきった。これまであえて切り離そうとした過去の敗戦の悔しさを背負い、有言実行で取り返した。だが、チーム2勝で決勝進出に王手をかけた後、仲間が2敗。4回目の負けは、自身に託された最終第5試合で喫した。2G先取後に逆転され、メダル確定に届かず漏らした。

「もう、本当に力が残っていない」

最後の負けは中1日で迎えた3位決定戦。9日、フランスとの第2試合で相手エースに敗れた。2－2で迎えた第5Gで10－7とマッチポイントを握りながら、5連続失点。第4試合での勝利で2勝2敗には持ち込んだが、銅メダルは遠かった。

「一生、悔いは残るけれど、これがスポーツの素晴らしさなのかな。負けがあるから、勝った時にうれしい。そう考えるしかない」

他競技では馬術が日本勢92年ぶりのメダルを獲得。5大会連続出場で48歳の大岩義明は、表彰台で「ようやくここまで来た」とかみしめた。近代五種や飛び込みは初のメダルを手にした。誰もが過去の敗戦や失敗を糧にしてきた。張本は最後の試合後に言った。

「『次こそ』と簡単に言える舞台ではない。4年後、今日以上に悔しい思いをする覚悟を持って歩みたい。僕たちができるのは、頑張り続けることしかない」

努力しても「絶対」はない世界。4年に1度の五輪。その重みに向き合う日々の価値は尊い。【松本航】

Even though the Hayata/Tomo is the strongest XD pair. For LA 2028, it might be worthwhile to consider using the 3rd player from both men and women to team up as the XD pair. This will give both Hayata and Tomo a better chance to make it to the gold medal matches in singles, and I still think Japan would still be strong enough to get a bronze in XD... possibly even silver.

"Most decorated" may be a better phrase for the pair. From the results in the past 2 years, especially ever since Hayata turned her focus to WS, they have been far from the strongest-possible pair in Japan. Togami/Miwa and perhaps Sora/Miwa showed more potential to cause impact for the CNT and trouble for the rest of the world.

I agree - a lot will depend on how Sora and Shinozuka develop as I think with their lefty advantages they should be able to support an XD partnership that is better than Hayata and Harimoto. Wouldn't be surprised if something like Shinozuka/Matsushima - Kihara/Harimoto wouldn't have done a better job at this Olympics than Hayata- Harimoto. With all the doubles, Harimoto's serving has gone down the tubes as well...

I wouldn’t be surprised if the “victim” taunted him. After all he’s a (mini) celebrity and just like rockstars are “harassed” by hordes of female fans, TT stars must attract some crazy women too.

Ito's name is not there, which means she intends to get her spot through WR. Hayata, Hirano and Harimoto get automatically selected because of Paris 2024. The 4th spot goes to the winner of the selection trial. The 5th spot goes to the next highest WR. Kihara and Nagasaki gotta work harder or only 1 of them will get to go.
