I haven't watched Zong Geman play much, but it was puzzling watching her play vs. Kaufmann. Zong's opening loops were exclusively to the middle of the table, there was literally zero variation, and in both BH openings and rallies I'm not sure I saw once where she hit a BH down the line shot to Kaufmann's BH. IDK if it's a coaching issue or just an abilities issue for her, but those are some bread and butter variations even at much lower levels of competition.

With Kaufmann, if you don't contain the angles, you lose very quickly if you don't get the ball past her.

I love Annett's game. As you know, parallel balls rank high with me. Too few drills are made based on this, in my opinion, and have been for years. As a left-hander, I run high on her parallel balls along the line which she frequently looks up.

Per some Tieba users, Wen Ruibo is put on death row and Huang Youzheng is labelled Little Dice.

And this win qualifies Huang Youzheng and Kaufmann for World Cup 2025, as a new rule starting with World Cup 2024.

温瑞博,进了这么多次决赛拿不到冠军 (Wen Ruibo has reached the final so many times but never won once)

I think this was a problem for Goda. I really like Goda's spin based game. Good blocking and uses odd angles well. But she'd often set up shots that really should be clobbered and she doesn't seem to have put-away power or willingness to commit to it.

Despite that, there wasn't much difference in the scoreline between the two with Goda failing to close out games where she was ahead. That's pretty impressive to do with just a mostly controlling style. I feel like if she can add some find some more offensive put aways, that might give her the edge in future matchups with Kaufmann. Not sure if it's a matter of equipment though since I read she was using pretty soft rubbers (Mantra Pro M and S?). Might affect the rest of her game.

Anyway these two are destined to meet often in the future and each time will be an interesting gauge of their development.

Goda is 16, Kaufmann is 18. That's the story for me. A one and a half year difference is significant.

So do you think Goda has more long term potential? I was leaning that way already but I don't have any experience judging progression based on age.

Not necessarily but that there is time for some gaps to get narrower as experience solving problems is a big deal in table tennis. Table tennis is too complicated to make it exclusively about age, but if Goda was beating Kaufmann, then you have something very, very special. But Kaufmann beating Goda is very reasonable as Goda can still play this event for 3 more years while Kaufmann has at most one. Kaufmann was a bronze medalist last year for some perspective and she was older than Goda then.

I am a bit surprised that Sora didn't play but there will likely be an excuse.

Anyone know what Mia Griesel uses? She hits the ball pretty thick sometimes I wonder whether it us pips on either or both sides and if not at all, she has extremely talented ball contact and an extremely bright future.
She switched to shortpips on FH a few years ago. That's where public information ends for the time being. And she beat Goda at WYC 2023.

at the german youth championships last summer, she played with Innerforce Layer ZLC, Butterfly Challenger Attack Pips and Tenergy 80
