they really should do something about the continental ranking system. It hurts to watch how the male Australian players have been underperforming so far… a bunch of other players would‘ve deserved to qualify instead of them…
unfortunately/or fortunately, for "World" titled events, you need to include players from all regions.
In the old days, the weakest players get together and form a group.
and the winner/s of said group goes into the main draw to face the other stronger players.

I actually like that system, which is great for players from weaker continents.
In today's terms, it is a qualifications round.

Today, you just face the seeds, and it is really ugly.

It happens in the World Cup (football) and Olympic games too, people should not take it personally lol.

If we talk TT today and previous world cups, which do you prefer?
Well, this world Cup format has its plusses and minuses. More inclusive, larger event and shows some potential in terms of its organization. I do have some nostalgia for the old event.

Kanak crushes Cifuentes 1, 4, 4, and 3. With 44 points won to 12 lost, he'll probably only have to split games with Dang Qiu to advance.
Remembering from last year, the only points that matter are the ones between the players who tie with each other. So if Dang beats Cifuentes, the only thing that matters is the Qiu vs Jha match and who gets either more games or in the case of a 2-2 tie, more points in that specific match between Qiu and Jha. Remember this caused confusion with Harimoto and Groth last year.

you have raised a very important question, table tennis is indeed very confusing for fans who come from other sports.

In the past you have the 3 majors - olympic gold, world championship champion, and world cup winner.
There was finals before too, world tour/pro tour finals, and now it is just called WTT finals
The previous finals wasn't as serious, since it was mostly few countries playing and winning (think of 6 to 9 Chinese players of 16 players taking part).
WTT ranking is just world number 1 per se, and there is some other stats like - how many days/week, at world number 1. Ranking number 1 only gives you seeding, and other than glory, there is no monetary or ranking point value in it.

Now today, ITTF and WTT are separated (even though WTT is a subsidiary, the marketing/event/IT staff are not the same people).
ITTF is World Cup/World Champ/Mixed Team world cup etc
WTT now has Finals, Smash, Champions
Finals at one stage was supposed to replaced the world cup.

now each of these have fancy points, so if you were to use "ranking points" and the winners of each event to see what is important.... here is goes:

OG 2000
Smash 2000
World Champ 2000
Finals 1500
World Cup 1500
Champions 1000

note, OG is every 4 years, World Champ individuals is every 2 years. The others are every year, with Smash having 4 and Champions 6 per year.
They should do it like in darts. A ranking called, Order of merit or written differently, the ranking of the prize money they earn over a 2-year period.
PDC, order of merit

DON'T WOUND OUR UMPs, PLEASE

We strongly disagree about the present principle of the use of TTR System during a match.
Сommentary to sustain the disagreement.
— It might detract a lot from umpires reputation once the TTR reveals a wrong call by umpire. As a result, the umpire will always prefer a "prudent" option so as to save his face that to keep his (her) mouth silent even if the service being faulty like hell.

HOW TO PROCEED.
We strongly suggest that TTR should be called on by a player during a match in the case of the patently suspicious serve or edge ball, regardless of umpire's call.
Player is entitled to ask for TTR three times during a match.
-----------
ITTF ought to reconsider their present rule of TTR, we believe. ITTF should not put umpires under stress by displaying umpire's call in public.

I don't fault the umpire at all. I understand they're doing the best they can, but I don't even see how the umpire from the side of the table in many cases can accurately tell if the ball is hidden from the vantage point of the receiver. TTR just provides an enhancement and recourse for the receiver (or server) so that he/she is not forced to just live with it.

Great match from Sabine to win against Lee Eun Hye - she looks like she is a lot more comfortable chopblocking with the anti now repeatedly and not just pivoting blindly.

Anders Lind challenged the serve for hiding with head - pot calling the kettle black?

Takeaway of World Cup 2025:
TTR aggravates what it's supposed to alleviate.

TTR: Escalate is the new mediate...

Things got abit heated up during harimoti vs elbeialis (Aruna at the coach side). His serve was warned, then get a yellow card, afterwards accuse harimoto’s sever as illegal so looking up the review it was totally legal.

Elbeali is spending too much time whining abt serve legality when he should be worried abt the score line and playing better 🤷‍♂️
